That show really sucked. The song choices were so … white. I mean seriously, Bette Midler, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and Faith Hill songs all in the same show? It was like my own personal hell.
My favorites were Mandisa, Ayla, and Melissa. After Kinnik butchered that Gretchen Wilson song, I thought to myself, “That Reba song that Tina (my friend) always sings at karaoke would have been a better choice. Maybe Melissa will sing it.” And she did! I thought everyone else was either average (Lisa, Paris, Katharine) or terrible (Heather, Brenna, Kinnik, Kellie). I think Brenna and Heather should go. I thought Heather should have gone last week, and I still don’t think she’s pretty.
All in all, a terrible show. I was longing for Taylor and Chris after the first two songs.
I beg to differ that Bonnie Raitt is considered by anyone to be a country singer. Raw-voiced female rocker, sure. Maybe, just maybe, folk-rock sometimes, but COUNTRY? D the C, you are letting your prejudice against anything country cloud your logic.
I thought last night must have been ugly-outfit night.
Of the girls, I think Lisa has the best shot to win, but overall, I think the boys are far more interesting. My husband is actually being drawn in to American Idol for the first time this season because of Taylor. I haven’t made my pick yet, but I like Taylor, Ace (naturally), and I’ve got a soft spot for young Kevin. (That is his name, right? The one Paula wants to squish.)
Well, last night was a suckfest of craptacular mediocrity. Mandisa, Lisa, and Paris were marginally better than the rest. That’s about it.
Is there anywhere I can see the performances tonight after the show, online or something? I think I won’t be able to catch it tonight.
Perhaps this is why I like Bonnie Raitt and love that song. Still, it does sound country to me.
DtheC, that had to be the worst spoiler ever.
As alluded to above, I think Brenna and Paris both had the same problem – they chose a key too low to show off their voice. Makes the song sound flat & dull. And everybody’s choosing a song because they always like it, or their grandma always like it – without regard to how well they can sing it.
I’d be curious to see how an experienced singer handles feedback like “connect better with the audience” or “be less mechanical”. How does that translate into what you do while you’re singing?
Pretty crappy show, overall.
I wish they’d go back to theme nights and that they’d make the themes more challenging.
"Tonight’s them is…the music of Anthrax. Here’s Kellie Pickler with “Efilnikufesin.” Go!
That woud sort out the wheat from the chaff in a hurry and be entertaing as hell at the same time.
Nobody shone. Mandisa, Paris, Lisa, and Katherine get through; everyone else sucked tonight. Brenna (I liked her, but she gets worse every song) and Heather sucked worst, I vote them gone. Kellie gets a reprieve for one week because she sucked a little less, but overall she’s the worst of the bunch. She just had a good night. Kinnik needs to just wear a sock in her panties and do drag.
And I disagree: if Mandisa does “Brickhouse,” I will lose a lot of respect for her. Now, “Nessun Dorma” . . . Ask me, Mandisa needs to go home and get on with being one of the great voices of her generation, and just leave the field for the children to fight it out for second place. She’s wasting everybody’s time playing around in this little sandbox.
Just a point to make. I don’t see anyone coming out of Idol 5 that can be a serious successful artist in pop music. Sure there is some decent talent but no one with heaps of ‘star’ quality.
Anyone who has the ‘it’ factor has been found already. The season one winner was an anomaly and nobody has matched it.
My 0.02 cents.
kezami , you don’t think Aiken has the “it” factor? (Yes, I know he came in 2nd).
On that note, it strikes me that deep down they really don’t care if Fantasia ever has a hit album, or if Bo Bice hits big. If they did, great! But it would just be icing on the revenue cake.
After all, this is a TV SHOW first and foremost. That’s the business model, and it is veeeeeeeerrrrryy successful at that.
Coming in late this week, but full agreement with many of the comments – this week sucked hard for the ladies. Bad, bad show. That said, here’s how I see them stacking up:
Paris
Mandisa
Ayla
Lisa
Kellie
Melissa
Kinnik
Katharine
Heather
Brenna
Let’s hope we see a better show tonight.
I’ll gladly fork over my life savings to hear them do Startin’ Up A Posse as a group song.
Um, there is no 2/29. This is not a leap year.
I thought Mandisa really closed the show. But I just had to power-vote for my girls Katherine & Kinnik, who were in the double death-trap of early performer & questionable song choice. Lisa’s performance was good, & she seems confident, but she’s still so young, I keep wondering if she’s another Jasmine Trias. So not quite as many votes for her.
Rough rankings:
Katharine & Lisa --good jobs on not terribly exciting songs tonight, great voices overall.
Mandisa --powerful
Ayla --hey, she can actually do this! I didn’t vote for her last week, but this time I did.
Kinnik --not my favorite song this time, but I liked her enough last week to still be rooting for her.
Melissa --did all right. I don’t think she has the voice of some of the girls, but she may be smarter in picking songs. And she’s kind of cute, in a Jamie Luner way.
Kellie is the second coming of Carrie Underwood, so I refuse to take her seriously. Did all right for blues-rock singing this time.
Paris --no, no, wrong song* and * wrong key. I gave her one fewer vote this time than…
Heather --likable (I dig her AI stalker identity), but so far the second weakest link, after…
Brenna --pitchy and bitchy. I don’t mind the constant posing, but as a singer, no; sort of a twit. I gave everyone else bonus votes for not being her.
Are you by chance a woman over 25? Clay Aiken has been successful I’ll grant you that but he very likely won’t reach the popularity and sales of Clarkson over the long run.
AI is a very successful vocal talent show with a huge international audience. It has shown the ability to successfully ‘create’ an artist by adding a few missing parts, such as style and polish to improve the singers image. Clay is a great example.
I have one spoiler for tonight’s show, which I am happily surprised to report:
Chris Daughtry shaved
If she does Nessun Dorma she’ll certainly be kicked out of the sandbox-- see Stevie.
You may be right that Brickhouse is beneath her but she’s on American Idol and seems very serious about wanting to win. I think Brickhouse will get her many, many votes.
Ok, I hope this night is better than last night.
I want better songs!
Those spoilers weren’t all bad!
I like Taylor’s song choice, I like the music, I like his vocals…
His presence, though… makes me run away… He scares me!
