American Idol 4/12

I didn’t give any reason for not voting for Bo, at least I didn’t mean to. I don’t vote AT ALL. I’m not going to get on the phone and power vote. Last night’s show was based on over 3 million phoine calls, so unless I am willing to power vote, then my one stinking vote for Carrie (I thought she was the best on Tuesday) would have meant absolutely nothing.

Like Mellencamp says-- Ain’t that America? It’s the Americans who give enough of a crap about AI to vote. I can’t see Ryan saying “Americans who give a shit about this TV show have voted-- you’re safe Scott.”

I can see why the producers would rather have you vote for someone than against someone. It makes it seem nicer.

It also makes it look better when American Idol can boast about over 3 million calls as opposed to the perhaps million or so people who really voted 3 or more times.

First off, a thousand curses on AI and Fox for padding this show unexpectedly to an hour. Five minutes of drama; 55 minutes of vamping and commercials. And it ruined my plan to see both Revelations and AI through the magic of Tivo.

Bo in the bottom 3: stupid.
Nadia getting the boot: sad, but inevitable.
Scott not getting the boot: a crime against humanity.

And that was exactly FOX’s evil plan!

That’s a bit harsh!

I agree 100%, especially the last sentence.

Minor correction: it was over 34 million votes, not 3. I don’t think 3 million would be much to boast about with the power voting audience of this show.

I also think there should be a 1 vote system. It just seems more fair as it would then be based on how many fans each contestant has vs. the raw strength of their fans’ dialing fingers…

I agree that her voice isn’t technically as good as some of the others. On the other hand, I used to be a singer and man, I wish I couldn’t sing like that.

This is good because I’d hate to think power voters can only manage 3 calls. Ten sounds much more powerful.

I was probably too harsh. She can carry a tune, certainly. But when I look at her, I think “Tina Turner”, and I tend to expect from her a voice with a sort of Janis Joplin “lost in the song” intensity combined with a sort of Aretha Franklin “soulful to the bone” emotiveness. Instead, I get Carrie with an afro.

Heh!

Reprising “Against All Odds” was a surprise horrorshow. I thought we had heard the last of that mess.

I think he said “This maybe be her last time on this stage” though he almost fumbled it.

gigi, if he’s in the bottom three next week, will we have to hear it again? I cringe at the thought.

I completely agree that there should be only one vote per person. I’m sure some people would find a way around it but it wouldn’t be nearly the crap shoot it is now.

Damn. I guess it was wishful thinking that he messed up two nights in row (Tuesday it was the H&O writing the song for Paul Young comment).

I hate that little turd.

I have a DVR so I guess I"ll just tape it. I missed it last night (who knew it was on two nights in a row?).

I’ll have to watch again to see what all the fuss is over Bo. Frankly, he didn’t do it for me. And this from the woman who swoooooooooned over Steve Perry who ain’t exactly the best looking guy ever to belt out a tune.

It’s more of a cumulative awe thing we’ve got going for Bo. When you watch them thru the auditions, then week after week in the finals, any one performance doesn’t really change the opinion you’ve formed. Bo might not have tweaked your pigtails Tuesday, but the Bo package works for a lot of us. Personality, vocal ability, performance quality, looks, performance consistency and confidence, it all adds up when you watch the whole season.

That’s part of what’s so frustrating about Idol every year, fan bases form for each of the singers and quite often you’ll lose a better singer and keep a lesser performer with a bigger fanbase rabidly hitting redial. The one-vote system that many of us long for would indeed be a better system if the contest was just about singing talent, but it’s ultimately about selling commercial time and it makes for some compelling TV and then selling CDs, and you can bet that the rabid dialers will buy up every future product their favorite is attached to.

Notice how us Bo fans have obviously better taste than whomever is keeping Scott in the competition? Neat how that works, eh?

Here’s the deal. From now on, I am giving 100% of my votes to Vonzell.

—Bo has made it clear that he won’t take an ego hit if he gets voted off. So I don’t have to worry about him. And judging by this thread, he’s not in any danger just because I withdraw my votes.

—Anthony does nothing for me. Ditto Anwar.

—Scott will go as soon as the people voting for him are outnumbered. To that end, I need to vote for someone else as much as I can. And I think it would be more efficient to choose one someone.

—Constantine is impressing me lately, but not enough to make me pull support away from Vonzell.

—I’m sick of everyone taking it for granted that Carrie will be in the final 3/final 2/or will win. She’s not the real deal. She the suburbanite’s idea of a country queen, and I don’t like her.

—I want to see how far Vonzell can go. If she can upset Carrie, hurrah. And don’t say it can’t happen! Vonzell needs people to believe in her, and I do. So I will dial the whole two hours for her, as long as she lasts.

And don’t forget that Vonzell is cute as a cute button.

I hate perky, but I love Vonzell.

Did anyone notice that when they moved down to Anthony, Vonzell, and Nadia, Nadia already had the mike in her hand? I think she already knew it was her.

I thought I saw that all of the contestants had microphones. I could be crazy.

The first time they showed the constestants sitting, Anthony had the mic. I think there was just one and everytime another person sang they just handed it back to someone sitting in the bottom row.

Nah, they all had mics from the group sing thing, some kept them on their laps or in hand and the rest put them down out of sight, that’s all.

7 pages? I don’t know whether to apologize to the rest of Cafe Society or be proud of our obsessiveness.

I came in from work and dinner, checked CS and thought “Dayam, we sure like talking about AI. Ain’t that America!”

Because I’m a sick and obsessive individual.
