The Top 7 sings songs of the cinema with “mentor” Quentin Tarantino.
Gokey has another chance to sing “The Rose.” Don’t disappoint me, Danny. You know you want to do it. However, I will understand if you prefer to do “You Light Up My Life.”

Stupid question: why is Quinten Tarentino the mentor? He sings?
Quentin Tarantino is as big a music geek as he is a movie geek and was the best celebrity judge they ever had. I can’t believe they’ve taken this long to bring him back.
I don’t remember him as being all that memorable, myself. :shrugs:
I’m a big fan of baseball (and have published a book about it), but I don’t imagine for one second that I have a single thing to offer a semi-pro player trying to hit the big time.
(Just sayin’)
I remember him well. He was one of the only celebrity “mentors” to give constructive criticism and honest feedback. He and Andrew Lloyd Webber were probably the best this show has ever had.
I’m looking forward to tonight.
He was only there as a judge. He wasn’t working with them as a mentor at all. He said about six words per contestant. He told Fantasia she was “Fan-effing-tastic.” He told John Stevens he was “not your biggest fan.” It wasn’t like John really took that and worked with and became a better singer.
I mean, QT was fine, but I think there’s a bit of myth making about his appearance on Idol. I think you’d have to go back and watch the show to know what I mean. It’s nothing against Quentin, I just think people remember a lot more than what actually happened.
It’s all relative. Maybe he wasn’t that great, but compared to other guest judges, he was.
Here’s a good example. This is the entirety of his interaction with Diana Degarmo:
You can agree or disagree with his appraisal of the song (which was “My Heart will Go On”), but it’s 10 seconds of feedback, not that helpful, and not that different from what any of the judges say or what any other guest judge might have said.
Now, I think they’ve dropped the guest judges bit entirely in place of guest mentors. Why? Because pop stars want to be seen as nice and they can be a lot nicer as mentors than as judges. I don’t think they’ve ever had a mentor before who’s not a musician, and I don’t think Tarantino cares if he’s seen as nice, so it’ll be strange to see what he does tonight.
I think I’m really just saying there’s not much *quantity * to his previous appearance on Idol. He did fine in the 15 seconds he was given per each contestant.
He said more than that (go to 2:43 for his comments to Fantasia) .
We’ll just have to disagree, but his comments are a lot more entertaining than the boring, polite encouragements they get from most mentors.
Anyway, it will be interesting to see how he mentors singers since he isn’t one.
A couple songs I’d like to hear tonight:
Adam: “Nobody Does it Better” Well just because no one does on this show.
Anoop: “Saturday Night Fever” Cuz I think it would be hilarious
Lil: “Help” Because she needs some
If nobody sings “Against All Odds,” I’ll consider it a successful night.
That song is such a kiss of death that I hope Gokey tries it.
I suspect Lil or Gokey will leave tomorrow.
Quentin looks… uhhh… odd. Old? Botoxed? What is it?
Also? Tacky intro re: the judges. If Simon and Paula engaged in less grabby-juvenile-Crayola bullshit, we’d have time for everyone to say a few words.
Allison was fine, but she kind of dodged the high notes.
ETA was she saying “I miss you, boy?”
