American Idol 4/14 & 4/15 (Open spoilers and speculation)

I’d give Lil props for at least picking a song that had potential to be interesting remixed. I wish Allison had done THAT song.

Bottom three: Anoop, Matt, and either Allison or Lil, with Anoop going home. Kris was hands-down the best of the night.

I think the song was bland and overplayed, and the movie was completely unrealistic. I thought the homeless guy was creepy. He looked like a rapist. I didn’t believe any real woman would be interested in some smelly, filthy bum off the streets.

Danny I couldn’t care less about, but Allison deserves to stay. She has been getting progressively better as the weeks pass. The opposite could be said for Lil.

I think Lil was the best. The rest were all solidly mediocre. Very poor song choices all around. Adam should have done “Heavy Metal (Takin’ a Ride).” He’d have blown the doors off.

Catching up:

I did like Adam, but Simon nailed it when he mentioned the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Adam should have done “Sweet Transvestite.” The first time I saw Adam, I thought he was a drag queen. maybe he will do “Lola” later in the season.

Except for singing terribly, she was great!

Your commentary here is just getting youtubey and trollish.

Also, the guy in Once wasn’t homeles. He wasn’t even unemployed. He was just a part time buskar.

Allison isn’t going anywhere. A fine, but not great performance. Best “rocker chick” voice ever on the show, since she can do more than scream. She’s quite good for a 16-year-old.

Anoop had a second great week. Nicely done, great control. I liked it, and I wasn’t previously an Anoop fan.

Adam went too, too far, but mostly, he made it work. Not as good as his last two performances, but I really don’t think he’s ever going to top, “Mad World” for the rest of the competition. His version was better than any other version I’ve heard, including the Andrews/Jules version. Also, Adam’s not a rocker - he’s showing off an 70’s-80’s era metal voice. “Born to be Wild” was a poor choice. It’s tired. He shouldn’t have done it, and if he HAD to do it, he should have dialed it back A BIT. Nonetheless, it was entertaining, and that’s not easy to do with that song.

I never got all the Gokey hate around here. I didn’t watch the auditions, maybe that’s why. Tonight, I have to say that everything ppl have been saying about him its. That was shit - douchey shit.

I liked Matt and Chris, but don’t have much to say beyond that.

Lil has a GREAT voice. “The Rose” is a great song. This was two great things that do not go great together. I really feel like she’s grasped defeat from the jaws of victory with that performance. That was just all over the place, and too, too much. If ever Simon had a reason to pull out his “karaoke and cruise ship” tripe, this was it. Or with Gokey, I guess. Honestly, I think she has a great voice, but she’s not singing great. Terribly disappointing.

Lil is going home. I hope she continues her musical education, because she has a natural gift. She just can’t seem to make the most of it.

My order, with points to 5:

  1. Lil 5.0
  2. Kris 4.5
  3. Adam 4.5
  4. Danny G 4.0
  5. Allison 3.5
  6. Anoop 3.5
  7. Matt 3.0

Lil sounded awful. I think she always sounds just a little bit flat or something. She just doesn’t have a very good tone to her voice. She can shout out the songs that require a lot of power, and some people are impressed by that. But on softer songs she’s all over the place–just a mess.

Kris was the best of the night–if for no other reason than his song choice.

Adam’s got talent, but when he screeches those high notes it is really offputting. Sounds like a cat fight.

Oh God, poor Lil. She was written off the show before it started tonight (To Allison: “You’re the last hope for the women in this competition.”) and she could have saved herself with a fantastic performance in the Pimp Spot, but she blew it. Blew it really badly. And you can tell she isn’t accepting that she’s now outclassed by everyone else in a big way. She’ll blame the judges (Paula [paraphrased] “You’ve had a good ride, say goodbye.”), she’ll blame the band, she’ll blame the Internet, but she won’t accept that she’s seventh place. Hey Lil, cheer up! You beat the blind guy!

  1. Adam
    (big gap)

These are in sort of random order, they were all basically equal in skill and level of boring. Allison was more interesting but hit too many bum notes. Kris and Anoop were technically great but yawn. Danny was the usual midlevel blah, less annoying than usual, and I don’t even remember Matt. At all.
2. Kris
3. Allison
4. Anoop
5. Danny
6. Matt

(Grand Canyon)
7. Lil

I didn’t realize Gokey was emotional. I thought he looked drawn, as if sick or exhausted, perhaps both.

Loved Adam, liked Allison, was a bit bored with the other guys, and Lil took a decent song and blew it–and defending her choice to Simon didn’t help; it only hurt. There was no defense.

Man, I’ve got to echo the amazing suckitude of the song choices. Why, oh why couldn’t they have had Quentin Tarantino pick the songs? Or they could have had a “songs from Quentin Tarantino movies” theme. You’d be almost guaranteed to have a good selection.

I can’t believe the contestants are this musically clueless. I have to believe they are choosing from a very short song list. Either that, or they think the path to getting the most votes lies in picking the safest MOR dreck they can find so it will appeal to middle America. Or perhaps they are all dumber than Paula - If that’s possible while still maintaining the ability to walk and sing.

As for the performances, here’s the way I call it from best to worst:

Adam - That was just flat-out entertaining. It’s not just the singing that matters here, it’s the entertainment. And Adam is wickedly entertaining. You’re never bored when the guy’s on stage, and that’s what makes someone a star. The guy’s going to be huge. I’m not sure he’ll have a great record career, but he’ll have his own show in Vegas at least. Or he’ll star in rock-oriented musicals on broadway, which is pretty much what he’s been doing. Only now he’ll be a name and be a headliner.

Kris - I love Kris, because he knows how to sell a song. He’s the one person on this show who I think really, actually cares about music and not just being a winner on AI. And it shows in every performance he does.

Anoop - Great performance of a sucky song. One of the first times I really actually enjoyed listening to him. It was probably more tolerable because I was sticking pins in my Bryan Adams voodoo doll at the time. Thanks for making Canada look even more like a bunch of pussies, Bryan.

Allison - She was a bit off tonight. Her timing wasn’t on, the dynamics of the song were wrong (quiet and loud in the wrong places), and it just didn’t have the level of sheer talent her other performances have had.

Danny Contacts: Yeah, whatever. That pony has one trick. A very annoying trick. But at least it was better than…

Matt: I’m sorry, but that just flat-out sucked. I was sick of listening to that song about four bars in, and it never got any better. At this point, I can’t remember the song, I can’t remember the melody, and I can’t remember why I want to go on living. Dude sucked the life right out of me.

Lil: Great look. Which is good, because everything else blew. Have you noticed that she can only hold a note when she’s belting out at the top of her lungs? As soon as she tries to dial it back, everything just collapses. She looked awkward, she couldn’t stay on pitch, and she couldn’t find the groove of that song if her life depended on it. Which it kind of did, because I think she’s toast. There’s been lots of R&B style singers on this show at this point of the competition, and she’s by far the weakest of them. Melinda Doolittle would have chewed her into 'lil pieces.

I was going to type out a list of my opinions, but for the 2nd week in a row, Sam Stone pretty much echoed my thoughts. I thought Anoop did the best vocals this week, but the song is so bad it took away from it a bit. Lil or Matt need to go this week. Either one is fine.

I’m surprised by the love for Kris. I think he’s a talented performer, but that just put me to sleep. Boring. It went absolutely nowhere. Compare it to Adam, who I haven’t had much love for overall, but the kid can sell it. That was a performance.

And I agree with the poor song choices overall- in all the music in all the movies, 43% of the night was owned by Bryan Adams and Lionel Ritchie. Egads.

I didn’t see Lil’s performance, but it looks like she didn’t blow anything. At all.

The Dial Idol rankings haven’t been all that meaningful this year.

Maybe not, but I don’t remember a time when their #2 was voted off.

Ditto. Thanks, Sam!

My pool points are on Matt going home. He appeals to the same people as Anoop and Kris, and they were both better. Lil, on the other hand, is getting worse by the week, but she doesn’t have any market share competition.
