He doesn’t have a strong enough voice to fill a theater; he will do OK on florid love songs a la the duets with Sarah Brightman.
I remember reading years ago that Rod Stewart didn’t think he should sing until he heard Bob Dylan on the radio. Then he figured, if that gravel voice ccould get the air, so could his. And he did all right with his rock songs. But his voice last night was godawful. Before I heard him sing that, I thought I might enjoy his American Standards album. Now I know I’d hate it.
I’ve heard him say each judge’s name every time, but he tends to enunciate better and speak louder when he gets to Simon.
Offhand, I can’t imagine anyone next week singing “classical” were, except Kat Pee.
Trying to imagine Taylor sing “La Donna Mobile”
I dunno. I only have one song of his (from a Grammy compilation c.d.), “Sogno” and his voice is very strong. I highly recommend it.
Ha! I don’t watch O.C. so it’s no skin off my teeth.
Yeah, me either: it interferes with my busy reality-TV-watching schedule. I was just kidding. But, sadly, I would not be surprised if Ace did start making the rounds on Fox, WB, and UPN shows. He’s the appropriate kind of pretty for their target demographic.
Except that there’s no more UPN or WB. Or won’t be after May 15th. There will be only CW. Goodbye some of the most popular shows watched by black Americans.
From what I understand, only Everybody Hates Chris is guarenteed a spot on the new network. The Bernie Mac Show and Girlfriends have a more than 50/50 chance of surviving. Everything else that’s blackcentric. . . bye bye.
Com’on Paris— you’re the last Black Hope!
My mom during the results show: “Katharine’s in the wrong group!”
Me: “Or Chris & Paris are.”
Ace is gone, which is fair. It worked out.
Chris gets his scare. Taylor may get it next week. Paris may have come off as a bit too cold last night. Anyway, I’m glad to see that Elliott & Katharine got the votes.
And I suspect that “cuntry mewsic” is so popular in this country that it was mathematically impossible for the one country singer to be in the bottom 3 this week.
Now we have 3 women & 3 men; also, broadly speaking, 3 jazz-based & 3 blues-based (rock-based, in fact) contestants.
Elliott: Male jazz crooner, very skilled
Paris: Female jazz singer, very skilled but uneven
Kath: Female jazzish (classically trained?) singer, good, arguably amateurish stage presence
Chris: Male rock singer, good, charismatic
Taylor: Male blues-rock singer, decent, professional, charismatic
Kellie: Female country-rock singer, mediocre amateur
Given the relative sales of soloists in country, rock, & jazz, I think Paris & Katharine have a certain demographic difficulty. Then again, chops have to count for something. Further, country & rock are well served by the music industry; AI contestants in these fields are not at the highest level (with a few exceptions, notably Kelly Clarkson). But AI is a good exposure for singers that the music industry would otherwise write off as uncommercial, & the viewership mix may reflect this.
Still, distinctiveness is an issue, & it now puts three at immediate risk: Taylor, Paris, & Katharine.
Meanwhile, Elliott has been riding the up-&-down cycle, & was up this week. Kellie probably won’t be in the bottom 3 of 6; at this point I expect she (or, technically, her countryness) gets 1/4 of all votes cast automatically, but she’s not good enough to win the whole thing.
If Paris gets a sympathy bump next week, & does well (may I suggest, no glurge?), she may break out of the bottom 3. But that’s hardly a sure thing.
Next week: Bocelli? Oookay…
You know, I knew this, but forgot about it … I thought the switchover was going to be later, like 2007 or something. And I have no idea how they’ll fit Ace on “Everybody Hates Chris” … I don’t even want to think about it. Maybe he’ll do a guest spot as a pimp or something, maybe? One of the kids who beats him up at school? “Everybody Hates Chris” is such a good show, and I hate to think it could be sullied by the likes of Ace.
I thought Bernie Mac was on Fox. Did it switch?
I think she gets a lot of the gullible votes as well because she seems like just a sweet naive girl who’s had a tough life (mother dead, dad in prison). And then she apologizes to the judges when they don’t like her performance. People like humble better than “Well, that’s your opinion but I disagree. I rocked.”.
