American Idol 4/20-21

Other that Bowersox, I really don’t care about any of the others - I mean, they are decent enough, but not one of them has “it” that makes me think they could have ever made it on their own, without benefit of this show. Just seems to be one of the weakest seasons ever.

Still, at this point it really doesn’t matter who wins - they will all go on an record a CD and we’ll see what happens. Past seasons have shown that the “winner” is not a sure thing for success.

And am I the only one who is annoyed by those stupid lemmings hanging around the mosh pit? I mean, I know they are planted there to be enthusiastic and join in the fun - but this “arms held high, and sway” nonsense looks like something choreographed by some ex-cheerleader/pep squad intern who is perky - and as Lou Grant aptly put it, “I hate perky.”

Southern Talker - yes I’m a fan of David Cook. I bet you’re a fan of some musician or author or somebody too. I don’t think he walks on water, but he puts on a great live rock show; is intelligent and funny in interviews; and seems sincere in his charity. I could go on but I won’t. Again I don’t see why it bothers you that people happen to like a performer. I’m not out doing fantardy things or mooning over him - just following his career, mostly cause I like his music. And I think mentioning or comparing his past performances on Idol would seem ok in an AI thread.

He doesn’t walk on water, but I think he’s the best they’ve had. Also, his album is great. Plus he just seems like a great guy in general.

I assume you’re talking to me… I never said it bothered me, I just said I don’t get it. There’s just a lot of comparisons to him in these threads, and he’s far from the most successful Idol alumnus. As I said originally, I don’t have anything against him, I just feel like I missed where he became a big star like Carrie Underwood or Daughtry. I don’t care if you’re a fangirl or fanboy, I just find it odd when people go on and on about him.

It’s only been two years. I think he’s going to be a big star.

David Cook (in my opinion, anyway) has buckets of the “it” quality that makes someone a star. He can sing very well (his last album wasn’t a big stretch, being mostly straight-ahead rock’n’roll, but he can indeed sing), by all impressions is quite intelligent, and likeable as anything. His year on AI was exactly what they hope to do (and fall short of most seasons) - find a star. Maybe you had to watch him on AI a couple of years ago to really appreciate him - he came out week after week and did something interesting and at least a little different, and at no time did you get the impression that he was anything other than completely self-directed - he knew exactly who he was as an artist and delivered consistently excellent performances, regardless of the genre. I’ve been listening to pop music for damned near four decades now, and he impressed the hell out of me.

Dittos to what OpalCat and CatWhisperer said better than I did. Just want to repeat what a great live performer Cook is. I saw him and his band 3 times (they had a 150 show tour last year) and am looking forward to seeing them again sometime.

Really? The song is about perseverance in the face of adversity.

It starts out describing a young, poor boy leaving home to find a life. He’s not asking for anything but workman’s wages - he’s not dreaming of stardom or fame and fortune - just a good job where he can make a living.

It’s damned tough, and he gets screwed over, ignored, beaten down by the city. He’s thought about running home to his family, but doesn’t.

In the last verse the perspective changes from first person to omniscient, and the narrator describes the boy as seen from the outside - an analogy is drawn between the boy and a boxer, carrying the scars of battles past. But no matter how many battles he’s lost and how many scars he’s carrying, he’s still a fighter, and there’s always another fight. He won’t give up.

That’s pretty damned inspirational, if you ask me.

As for Lee’s performance… meh. You don’t change the song’s melody like that. Not that song, and not in that way. It showed poor taste on his part. I’m sure someone like David Cook could come up with a Leonard Cohen-ish take on the song that would work, but Lee’s wasn’t it.

I did like the emotion he put into it.

As for the others… Casey was just okay. I’m getting a bit tired of him just standing there grinning and singing. He’s got to put a little more emotion into what he’s playing. I had to fast-forward through everyone else because they were boring me to tears. Siobhan did nothing for me again,

Crystal was good, but it was a strange performance of that song. I don’t think she interpreted it all that well, but she made up for it with emotion and enthusiam, so she was the best of the night.

If Casey or Crystal go home tonight, this show is dead to me. I can barely even stand to listen to the rest of them.

I may be discovering a latent missing tooth fetish.

The Black Eyed Peas have been around for ages and I still can’t decide if Fergie is hot.

She can sing though.

Who was the woman with the long straight brown hair who sang the kinda old-sounding song?

Are they really going to eliminate an idol tonight. Two years ago (maybe it was three) they decided not to eliminate anyone on Idol Gives Back.

Did anyone get eliminated? I couldn’t watch those performances.

It’s still not over.

Mary J. Blige rocked.

Mary J. ? Really?

Did not agree, thought that was the lamest “Stairway” ever.

Okay so the show ran over and the DVR cut off right on time. WHO WENT HOME???

Don’t people turn on their TV anymore? It’s still on, Stillwell Angel.

??? it ran from 8-10, its now 10:20, the DVR stopped recording at 10, they were still singing Stairway to Heaven

whoops, you’re right, I just turned it to Fox, why is it still on??
