American Idol 4/24-25

Ouch, ouch. Phil sounded rotten!

“Very nice vocal”? “Your best performance”? Am I high or are they? Damn, I need ice cream or something.

“Tonight, we’ve replaced our regular contestant Phil with a freshy-shaven Michael Bolton with a hangover. Let’s see if anyone notices the switch!”

Simon says people like him!

Who are these people, and can someone take away their phones?

rockle: you think singing nuns ala Sister Act will improve the show and present better performers?

The judges are on drugs. That was Phil’s worst performance, or at least in the bottom three.

xnylder, thanks for the laugh!

Dio, probably the same people that have voted for other Idol contestants over the years…

No, I meant the Esther-Williams-esque Spanish Inquisition nuns from History of the World Part I. But perhaps Sister Mary Clarence could knock some sense into these bozos.

Ah, I see you know “The Secret.”

Is it too much to hope that Jordin is singing this song ironically because she is a Douglas Adams fan? … Nah, never mind, it wouldn’t be so overwrought and melodramatic if she was being ironic. Would it?

Upon watching the recaps: There is something seriously wrong in this world, because I think Chris was the best of the night. What the hell is in this drink?

I know I’m a crabby, bitter old bat, but I don’t like even one of these song choices. This is worse that Country Week.

I really really like Jordin’s voice. I usually hate this kind of singing (speaking of such, where’s biggirl?), but there is just something about Jordin’s voice that I love to listen to.

Okay, this is why Jordin should win this contest. She feels the emotion of the music and she makes you feel it too. I can’t say that about any of the other performers.

Maybe it’s the good will, maybe it’s the tequila, but Jordin sounded great to me. I really liked that performance, it was controlled and yet emotional at the same time. It was a by-the-numbers showstopper done just right.

I wasn’t going to comment about anyone else in the same post as Jordin.

So here’s my take on the rest.

Chris - I think rockle has been sharing her drink with the judges. That sucked mightily. He was off key, everytime I hear him he’s off key. He does runs to try and cover it up but it doesn’t work because he’s still off key. His voice is also rather weak and I don’t think it was intentional to sound vulnerable since his voice is weak every week.

Melinda - I almost forgot about her. She is technically good but she is boring. She’d make a great back-up singer.

Blake - I think he intentionally played it down. Not great but not terrible.

Lakisha - Technically good but why the hell does she keep picking songs former AI contestants make famous? Yeah, she blew the roof off with the song from Dream Girls but the fact that she was in the bottom two last week should have made her rethink the re-doing of former AI contestants songs. I think she’s in danger but I am tempted to vote for her in the hopes that Chris will be the one to go.

Phil - I’m not surpised that he picked a country song but he didn’t sing it country. Phil is actually a technically good singer but there’s no emotion or personality to make him interesting.
Jordin - I’m afraid to like her so much because I seem to jinx everyone I root for.

Posting first, then gonna read the thread:
Chris: horrible horrible horrible. I didn’t like the song, and I didn’t like the way he sang it. He has the worst vibratto ever and I kept feeling like a lot of the notes weren’t really “on”. Plus, of course, his hideously nasal voice. I also don’t like how he jiggles his head around to punctuate his runs. God I think he sucks. VOTE HIM OFF NOW! The judges are on crack.

Melinda: yawn. She hit all the notes, she has control over her voice. Yay her. To me it is like someone who uses stencils to make a pattern of perfect shapes in paint in a wall border or something… compared to a great artist. Sure, they’re both using paint. And the stencils sure are exact. But one is technical and one is art. Melinda isn’t art. Melinda is boring beyond belief. Snoozeville. Go away already. They’re announcing the number to call to vote for her and I’ve already forgotten what her song sounde like.

Blake: oooh he picked a song I love. I’ll kill him if he beatboxes  I think he’s doing a nice job. It’s not blowing me away, but he sounds like Blake, not like someone else, and it sounds nice. It’s a very simple song, there isn’t a lot that should be “done” to it.

LaKisha: she has weird cadence. Re-(stop)-alized! sounds very weird. I think maybe it’s just that she’s out of breath. She did some of that melisma crappola in odd places that sounded bad. I really like to hear “trailing ends” that are supposed to be a single note just fade to a vibratto or something, not warble all the hell over the place with 50 different notes. I think it ruins it. Anyway, I didn’t like it very much.

Phil: AAAAAH interview moment scariness… did he magic-marker his eyebrows on more intensely tonight? They were just a little bit startling. Nice to hear that as usual he’s singing not from the diaphram, but from the back of the throat straight out through his nose. I really liked when he covered the Police, because his vocal style suited it. But most other stuff? I find his weird voice takes away from the experience too much for me. Song is kinda blah, too.

Jordin: It had a few weak moments but overall I felt it was strong. She puts so much emotion in her voice, it keeps me engaged. I don’t know the song, but she put a lot of really nice nuances in it–dunno if they’re her touches or written in, but it’s always nice to hear a little “something” that isn’t exactly what you expect in a song, like a note that goes up when you expected down, or whatever. either she is good at doing it herself or good at picking songs that contain it, but her performances tend to hold my attention far better than the other contestants’. Easily the best of the night.

The rundown:
[ol][li]Jordin[/li][li]Melinda[/li][li]Phil[/li][li]LaKisha[/li][li]Blake[/li][li]Using my table saw for a nose hair trimmer[/li][li]Chris[/li][/ol]

[ul][li]Congratulations, Chris – you’re the new Sanjaya. At least you can’t do new, ridiculous hairstyles each week.[/li][li]The producers obviously decided that this week, they were going to give all the judges whatever it is they give Paula every week.[/li][li]Know what I realized tonight? I fucking hate “inspirational” music.[/li][li]As much as I like Blake (and I do like him a lot better than thonight’s ranking shows), I gotta say one thing – that boy’s mouth makes the oddest shapes when he sings.[/li]Well, crap. I had a long post about Jordin that all revolved around a great joke. Trouble is, on preview I realized that “You’ll Never Walk Alone” isn’t the song that was supposed to go along with the joke. Damnit! What a waste of time. Oh well…Jordin tore the roof off anyway.[/ul]

My rundown:

  1. Melinda. Absolutely faultless and moving. She had me in tears.
  2. Jordin. Close second. She was very good, and she looks great and loveable, but something about that interpretation seemed slightly overdone.
  3. Blake. He did that song justice. He didn’t oversing it, he didn’t go in for any histrionics, he sang it straightforward. His best performance ever, imo.
  4. Lakisha. Ok, but same old, same old.
  5. Phil. Not quite as awful as Chris.
  6. Chris. My chair squeaking is less annoying. The judges need their hearing checked… or just maybe… could they be pimping this Justin Timberlake wannabe?

I think they must be pimping him for some strange reason. But the odd thing is that one or two other people around here like him and the screaming girls seem to like him, so I have come to the conclusion that he must sing on a suckage frequency that not everyone can hear.

Haven’t read any posts here, but just saw Jordin close the show. I’ve said it in another thread, and I will say it again here, she will win this competition. Or should, anyway. Melinda is great and can sing just about anything, Lakisha has a powerful voice and often shines, Blake continues to be boring as hell, boring as just about anyone, except of course Chris. Phil tonight showed that he has a fine voice, not one that I would ever want to bring into my house to listen to (it’s just not my style), but I can see that he could sell a lot of records.

But Jordin connects more than all the others. The rest sound good (or just okay) at their best, but they sound like many others that have come before. Jordin has the only voice that is truly unique. The only voice that you feel you have never heard before. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that she is the second coming of Barbra Streisand, but she clearly has the most potential, and is already very accomplished.

Plus, she looks damn fine too!

I liked Jordin and Melinda.

But I have a bone to pick with the producers: If Bono was the mentor and you were using his name to get viewers for tonight, then why the hell didn’t you show footage of him working with the finalists like every other mentor has done?
The man is photographed constantly, so I can’t believe he would have said no to any cameras.
