American Idol 4/25

I just rewatched the show and caught Seacrest’s comment to Kat. He said people “who don’t have the volume turned on”.

Now that Ace is gone, I would guess his voter’s will vote for the other guys. ID predicts the men are the top three; the girls are the bottom three.

I couldn’t quite make it out, but I think one of the judges was saying, “I hope when people discuss this show on message boards, they properly identify the song Paris sang as The Way We Were, and not Memories.”

Am I just missing it, or is Ryan no longer proudly announcing that “Last night thirty bazillion votes were cast” at each results show? I used to always listen to see just how rabid the voters were each week but it’s been awhile since I’ve heard them announce the amount of votes that came in.

If they have quit, is it because this year is a bit meh and the votes have been down? I know usually around the final 6 I start to vote to keep my favorites in but this year it just isn’t worth my time. I like a couple of them but none of them get me hyped up enough vote. (other than my feeble attempt to save Bucky on Queen night :frowning: ).

As good as Glady’s Knight in her prime? Not by a long shot. There is no question that she has the best voice of the group (by a lot) but she has a ways to go. You’re right about her phrasing and her delivery but it isn’t a question of talking with David Foster for an afternoon. She needs a coach to work with her - for a while.

Chris was 6/12.

No. Kat 1/7, Elliott 2/8, Pickler 3/9, Paris 4/10, Taylor 5/11, Chris 6/12. Of course, I take notes on an old envelope, & last night I voted repeatedly for everyone but the Mink, so I remember.

Um, yeah . . . maturity.

Who? Season 3 ended with 4 girls: LaToya London, Jasmine Trias, Diana DeGarmo, & Fantasia. No Carmen. But then, I didn’t see the 1st two seasons.

I largely agree, except that I think McGhee was pretty good, & we do have a crooner–Elliott is a real crooner, as opposed to the crap Frank & Dino impressionists that they mistakenly call crooners.

Kath: Really well sung, performance still marred by the smiling she always does, but she did put some work into her performance this time. She’s really not a good actress at all, but for radio she’ll be fine. #4 for the night, but on second viewing, I think she’s not too far behind the guys.

Elliott: Wow. Best of the night, though I respect those who would pick Chris’s performance. #1 for the night, & I’d like Elliott to win the whole thing.

Pickler: Um, weird arrangement of a familiar song threw me. On second viewing, I could actually hear what she was doing. Bit weak in the middle, but the falsetto bits at the end were cool. Even so, she’s the one I really want not to make the Top 2. #6 for the night.

Paris: Decent, but really affected. #5 for the night.

Taylor: I really liked this. Not a showstopper, but pleasant. My #2 on first viewing, but on second viewing, maybe should be dropped below Chris & Katharine.

Chris: The diaphragm singing lesson didn’t seem to change his sound on this song. What’s up with that? Still, good. Loud, charismatic–I suspect people at the show want him to win because he has such a strong presence. #3 on first viewing, which really should be a tie for #2.

David Foster: I liked him. I think his rearrangements helped Elliott & Kellie.

Bocelli: Can probably smell peroxide in bleached hair. Funny guy.

Chances of an all-male Top 3: Respectable.

Something’s been really gnawing at me for the past couple of weeks, and after last night, I have to ask: What the hell is up with all this sappy geezer music? This show is about finding an artist who will sell today, right? As in, this year? And maybe next year? I swear, my dad, who refused to pick up any new musical tastes since the end of the Vietnam War, not only easily recognized about 80% of the selections for the past three weeks, he sang along to a few of them!

Look…I’m not asking for blistering edge or words you can’t say on TV. I just want a little more variety. Savage Garden. Gin Blossoms. Bruce Springsteen. Huey Lewis and the News. Katrina and the Waves. Wang Chung. A-ha. The Bangles. Bananarama. Cat Stevens. Culture Club. Basic Element. So many perfectly AI-friendly artists and styles, and we have to listen to The Way We Were and Unchained freakin’ Melody for the godzillionth time. What next, The Banana Boat Song? Proud Mary?

As long as AI stays in this rut, I will steadfastly continue to watch for the sole purpose of being able to discuss it here.

Huh…well, anywise, this week I figured I’d rate each of the contestants in the order I’d like them to win.

Katharine McPhee: Am I the only one who thinks she should just wear slacks from now on? She can’t seem to pick a decent dress to save her life, and that “wardrobe malfunction” thing was just silly. Otherwise, she sounded really nice. Major bonus points for not picking I Will Always Love You, which would kill all my support for her until the end of time if she did.
Favorite: 1st. Let’s be honest here, folks, she’s about the only one who has any shot of making anything positive about the pop-idol deal she’ll be locked into. I don’t want “personality” from my Idols, I want an album I can envision being willing to spend money on. She has it, lock, stock, and barrel.

Elliot Yamin: Another very nice, mellow, listenable song from him. Didn’t like the loud tie, but didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the song.
Favorite: 2nd. He’s marketable, he’s well-liked, and he actually has a fighting chance at producing a sellable album. Won’t ever become a big star, though. Might seriously want to consider the lounge act, for all Simon Cowell badmouths it.

Kellie Pickler: Ugh. Nothing to like about this one. Overplayed song, countrifying was just awkward, and I hated the glory note. This could be the nail in the coffin.
Favorite: 6th. She’s gotten her exposure, and she needs a mandatory deal like I need another 3-week gout attack. Fun was fun, but it’s time for her to get the hell on with her real career.

Taylor Hicks: Another victom of AI’s constant weekly grind. He was struggling in parts. Still charming as hell (and I’m mystified as to all the flack he’s taken), but I give him at most one more week.
Favorite: 5th. He’s a showman; he needs to be a showman, not cooped up in a recording studio with that friggin’ schizophrenic Simon Cowell glowering over every note. I’m thinking club tour or cabaret show.

Paris Bennett: I wouldn’t have picked a sad song (for any reason, not just because Paris couldn’t pull off the right emotion). She was pretty good, but I have to wonder if she isn’t being worn down as well.
Favorite: 3rd. Is America ready for another manufactured diva? If she wins, it’ll probably be one of those quick, get-it-the-heck-over-with potboilers to complete her obligations before moving on to better things. I don’t see her being as successful as Carrie Underwood, much less Kelly Clarkson.

Chris Daughtry: He’s had to go way outside his comfort zone for a while now; IMO, he sounded all right this week. Vibrato sounded a bit weird, but not that big a deal for me.
Favorite: 4th. I’m torn here…I know he really wants to win, and he’s at least the second best singer remaining, and he has a huge fanbase, but…this is wrong for him. Totally wrong. Join a band or go on tour solo, fine, but don’t go through the use-'em-up-and-spit-'em-out machine that’ll just keep you from what you really shoudl be doing.

Absolutely no idea who’s going tonight.

What a wreck this show was.

I didn’t hate Pickler nearly as much as everyone else.

Katharine is too plastic for me. And her father and Paula have got to learn that blubbering on national t.v. is undignified.

Chris did great. I love his voice.

Elliott has that goofy charm thing going. I just adore him.

Taylor is smarmy, but I thought he did okay on the song. “Just Once” is a great song.

Paris is as cute as a button, and I liked her singing. However, she doesn’t strike me as being in the same league as Kelly Clarkson. She’s just too mature for the teeny bopper crowd, even though she’s so young. She’s an old soul.
I hope Taylor or Katharine go home.

Paris and Kellie are the bottom two. Unfortuanately, I think Paris is thje one whose journey is ending, even though Pickler doesn’t belong on the same stage with her.

And Kellie goes home.

The final 5 are set.

Whoooooooooooooohooooo!!!

Kellie gone.

Two good weeks in a row.

AI is going to be a lot more boring the next few weeks now :(.

Wait … what? They actually allowed that to happen? I better make sure my life insurance is paid up.

I think the show might actually get pretty good now. All the suck is gone. Everybody’s who’s left can sing and none of them are that obnoxious. It’s also pretty wide open. There’s still no clear frontrunner or even a clear final two.

Yeah, but the rest of the people are pretty boring personality wise. Taylor and Chris, I guess, are the ones left with a personality, but both are still ZZZZZ.

And I think the no clear frontrunner or final two speaks to the lack of talent this year. There is usually a clear frontrunner or final two because they blow everyone at home (and the judges) away. No one like that this year. Though, perhaps, on the whole better than S3, but at least that year had a Fantasia.

I couldn’t be happier, unless they were to add an extra week and bring back Mandisa, of course. I actually like everyone left! America is getting it mostly right this year, by my ears, anyway!

Anybody have a lead on next week’s theme?
