American Idol 4/4 & 4/5: Country

I liked Katherine’s song choice and performance. At times during the song I was thinking “Wow! A real singing voice!”

I thought Kellie made a good choice and did it justice.

The above two songs had some oomph to them. The rest of them were boring, boring, boring.

Taylor chose a good song and sucked the heart out of it.

Mandisa brought a touch of oopmh to hers, but it was still a “so what?” situation.

The other five songs may as well have been the same song. The theme was supposed to be “country,” not “slow, soulless, sleep-inducing country drivel.” There are actually some good songs in the country genre. There are songs with some pizzazz and spirit to them. There are songs that are musically interesting and challenging to sing. There are songs that grab your heart by its balls make it wince. Then there are the pointless yawners that got picked for tonight. Pardon me while I step outside and heave.

The problem with Taylor’s version of Country Roads was that it was way too fast. He couldn’t add any style to it when he was just trying to keep up with band.

What was the whole point of asking Kellie if she’s really as dumb as she acts? What else was she going to say?! “Yes, Ryan, it is a contrivance. In fact I matriculated at “Hahvahd” when I was only thirteen and I have a PhD in Literature.”

The show was rather boring. I liked Chris and Paris. I didn’t watch Katherine, heard it from across the room and it sounded screechy. I wondered why Bucky did the song he did because I thought it was not a country song, so how did he get away with that?
Is next week seriously Queen week?

The song was redone by Gary Allen, and was pretty big seller on the Country charts last year.

I liked Chris and Katharine the most tonight, though I have to admit that Bucky wasn’t too bad, and neither was the Pickler.

I think Ace, Mandisa or Taylor will go home.

Grasp!!

Is Seacrest getting macho handsome or what!?

Tonight’s ratings from me:

Chris
Katherine

(distance)

Kellie
Bucky

(light years)

Everyone else.

Ugh…before I say anything else, let me reiterate that this show, really, really needs new judges. I’ve never seen this much hostility before. For the love of humanity, let’s have some new blood. There was a time when the bickering was cute and harmless. Now it’s just plain ugly.

And just so we’re clear, I mean all the judges. I’ll spell it out for you folks: Simon Cowell is a hack. His criticisms sound like he’s reading the same ten cue cards over and over, and he sometimes can’t even keep his “opinions” consistent for a single show. And I know nobody wants to say this, but should he freaking get used to being booed by now? I mean, what the hell does he expect, that the audience is someday suddenly going to see the incredible wit of “safe and boring” and “karaoke performances”? As the saying goes, insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

I don’t think we’ll have to wait long. It looks like he and Seacrest are rapidly approaching the “either he goes or I go” stage (taking a shot at a man’s sex life is a whole 'nother level of dis), and I don’t think the viewing public or the network is going to be very sympatetic to Cowell.

On to the actual competition:

Taylor Hicks - He screwed up by setting the key too high; I could tell that he was straining a bit. Country Road isn’t supposed to be difficult. Okay but not great performance.

Mandisa - She must have struggled to find a song, because that was really unremarkable for her. I mean, it was good, sure, but definitely not used to what I’ve heard from her so far.

Elliott Yamin - This is country? Sure coulda fooled me. Decent, dependable, kinda like how he’s always been.

Ace Young - He sounded…kinda nice, actually. That-thing-he-does-that’s-not-falsetto was short enough that it wasn’t annoying. It wasn’t impressive, however…kinda like what a boy band member would do in a Texas lounge, if that’s any help.

Kellie Pickler - What can I say. They gave her the Testarossa tonight, and she damn near broke the sound barrier. By far the best I’ve ever seen from her.

Paris Bennett - She made a perfect song choice, she sounded great, and she looked like she was barely trying. Yeah. She looks good.

Chris Daughtry - With a lackluster couple of weeks, this was definitely make-or-break time for him…and he nailed it shut. It was an absolutely seamless performance. Put those forks away, yahoos, the front runner is back!

Katharine McPhee - She knew she needed to come up big after the near-shocker last week, and damned if that wasn’t exactly what she did. Impressive performance; downright professional-sounding, in fact.

Bucky Covington - Like Kellie, this was completely in his bag, and he had a chance to make a huge charge…and he blew it. He completely, totally blew it. Not only did he pick something that’s not even remotely country, he missed a few notes. I don’t usually ask this, but what the hell was he thinking?

Updated not-gonna-win list: Mandisa, Covington, Pickler, Young, Yamin. Yamin is simply too ordinary; and he won’t get the votes to beat any of the favorites.

Elimination prospects: A lot depends on exactly why McPhee had that close call. If it was just a coincidence (everyone thought she was safe, didn’t stick out enough and got lost in the shuffle, etc.), she’s going to be around for a while. If she’s really unpopular, she could be out. My guess is that it’s closer to the former than the latter and she’s safe. That means it’s probably between Covington, Hicks, and Yamin. I have a feeling…just a feeling, mind you…that it’ll be Covington. Young’s on borrowed time, but he won’t go this week.

Blah. I went to a show tonight (The Three Penny Opera with Alan Cumming and Cyndi Lauper - outstanding!) so I had to tape-n-watch later. I wasn’t fully paying attention because I was folding laundry and such, but all I really remember is looking up once and saying out loud “Hi, I’m Kellie Pickler, and these are my breasts.” You gotta hand it to The Pick, she knows her market. If she wins, there is no God. Or, if there is, he’s a 17 year old boy.

Best of the night: Elliott and Katharine by far

Who will fail to realize this: Most of America

Pretty Good: Everyone else

Horrible! Go Home!: No one, for once.

Not sucking as much as usual, but still pretty much sucking: Ace

Still hate: Pickler

Boring: All!

Annoying: Judges’ cliches (just a’ight, song choice, blah blah) tied with hostile Simon/Ryan “banter”

Plastic Surgery Disaster: Kenny Rogers. Yeek!

Who Should Go Home: No one, since it won’t be Pickler. I know I’m gonna be bummed, whoever it is. :frowning:

That sucked so. Hard.

Kenny Rogers is the worst thing that every happened to Country Music. He liked Ace the most? That’s cuz Ace came closest to achieving true Kenny Rogers lameness. Kenny Fucking Rogers? What. Ever.

Paris: sucked
Ace: sucked
Taylor: sucked hardest of the whole night.
Chris: see what happens when you drop the bullshit? some of your actual talent squeaks through.
Mandisa: out of her element, shoulda done a Dusty Springfield, Loretta Lynn Patsy Cline belter. Still, she can’t NOT sing a song so it stays sung.
Elliott: boring, sucked, but native talent showed through the awfulness of that song.
Kellie: the only not-horrific song choice of the night, and she still can’t sing.
Bucky: sucked hard. What kinda asshole songchoice was that?
Katharine: best of the night. Still, shoulda done a k.d. lang song, or Crystal Gail.

That was awful. I’ma hafta read tomorrow’s results here, cuz ain’t none of you got a big enough gun to get me to watch Kenny Rogers, the Olivia Newton John of Country Music, on American Idol.

Poor Whoopie and Chris. Why weren’t they in the audience on one of the less suckiest-night-of-all-nights nights?

I absolutely love Kenny Rogers

I went for his live concert last year, something I’ve wanted to do ever since I first heard “Gambler” and “Coward of the County” when I was 10.

 Wow, I bet!

My darling Taylor stunk up the joint. But if I was a voting person, I’d still call for him. Does anyone really change their vote performance by performance, or do you just find the person you like early on and stick with them?

Does Mandisa’s stylist hate her? “Let’s see…what could a big girl wear if she wanted to look truly vast? I know! Horizontal stripes and a pair of jeans! Next week: silver spandex.”

Kenny was right about Ace: the boy picked just the right kind of song. Damp 12-year-olds were burning up the phone lines last night, I’m sure.

Chris…didn’t sound exactly the same for a change. Good.

I’m beginning to realize that Bucky’s my second favorite. He’s not all that great, but there’s just something likable about him. Lose the hat.

I could barely understand a word anyone sang last night. Was it just the twanging, or am I getting old?

 I thought Olivia “Fig” Newton-John did country music (at least up until the “(Let’s Get) Physical” era). Which reminds me: I think Paris could have done a bang-up job with “Please Mister Please.” I don’t care if I’m a doddering sentimental old fool – for reasons that escape even me, I love that song!

Chris did a great job as did Elliott. I voted for both of them - repeatedly. One of these two must win!

Hated the Pickler - this is her genre and she didn’t rock it out.

Bucky was just okay. (OMG do I sound like Randy?)

Katherine can sing, but I just don’t really like her. I don’t feel any connection at all.

Paris stayed safe with her song choice - she was okay I guess.

Mandisa was pretty good.

Taylor just got on my nerves. I want to scream, “you can see, so stop doing the Ray Charles imitation.”

Ace - go home. He made love to the camera one too many times for me. He sounded okay, but he’s a lightweight overall.

Jali has spoken!

This is my biggest problem with Katharine. I think she’s enormously talented, and a very pretty girl, but I just can’t be bothered to care. Don’t like her, don’t hate her - she’s just neutral. Although, I have to say, I can’t stand the “Constantine-ing” all the time. Other than that, I find her very meh.

Hear, hear. I would love – LOVE! – to see some actual constructive criticism on this show that actually made sense. Or to see some actual musical criticism, beyond “That was pitchy”. I mean, give me a break. You could replace Paula with a Paula-bot programmed to say, “You really know who you are. That moved me. I just love how you are a natural performer. Blah blah blah,” and nobody would know the difference. Has she ever had a valid critique of any performer in the history of this show?

Then there’s Simon, and his “I’m hipper than this show” persona, which is getting extremely old. You’re right; every time he gets booed, he does this dramatic eye-roll and petulant sigh like he just can’t believe he’s getting booed. I assume it’s an act, but it’s an act I’m very, very tired of. And his critiques are only marginally better than Paula’s. “That reminded me of a lounge singer on a cruise ship.” Well, why? When you say something is “karaoke”, what does that even MEAN in the context of this show? They’re singing a song that someone else wrote, with backup instrumentals, in front of an audience… HOW IS THAT NOT KARAOKE?!?

Sorry, I tend to get a little exercised about this topic. My point is, I agree, the judges suck and they should get in people who have actual musical knowledge. Randy doesn’t bug me quite as much as the other two, but he’s disappointing as well, considering that he actually has some musical background playing with bands and so forth. You’d think he’d be able to come up with something better than, “That did nothing for me.”

Back on the topic of last night’s show, I thought Katharine McPhee was by far the stand-out. I just really dig her for some reason, possibly because she seems to really enjoy herself and shows genuine enthusiasm while on stage. She comes across to me as being non-fake in a way that most of the other contestants don’t. Could be just me, but I do like her. I hope she sticks around for awhile.

I like “Country Roads,” but thought it was the wrong choice of a John Denver song for Taylor. And I love John Denver (yeah, I said it). I think “Rocky Mountain High” would have been a better choice. It would have been a better choice for most people, actually.

My favorites of the night were Elliott and Katharine. Kellie and Bucky did a nice job, but who would have expected them not to? I hate the song Fancy. Mandisa and Taylor were lacking, but totally out of their element. Chris and Paris also did well, I thought. Ace should go tonight, though he didn’t do a particularly bad job. It’s just his time.

In other news: Bucky has a wife? When they flashed the “Bucky’s blah blah blah” on the screen, it said “Bucky’s wife and friends.” Huh. Why didn’t I know that? And why in hell do I know so damn much about Kellie Pickler? Because she gets too much airtime, that’s why. Or maybe it’s because Bucky knows how to keep his mouth shut. Note to AI: Lay off the Kellie pimping and tell me about some of these other people, please!

I really think that Ace is getting uglier. I swear I looked at him last night and it truly made me go “ick”. The stylizing this year is atrocious enough where I might think it’s a joke they’re playing on the contestants.

I only caught bits & pieces of the show, so I can’t truly “compare” the singers (and I don’t like country music at all) - but I thought Bucky was really good. Even a little sexy, in a trailer-park way. His voice had wonderful textures.

Taylor was awful, totally lacked conviction - ironic thing being, his voice could’ve done that song justice.

Mandisa - meh.

The little snippet of Chris at the end sounded really good, too.

The only people I’d be surprised to see in the bottom three tonight are Kellie, Katherine, and Chris. And Chris will probably only dodge based on past performances and sheer hotness. Kellie was in her element, although Fancy wouldn’t have been my first choice of song for her. Hubby and I both felt that Katherine was strong musically and definitely working the sex appeal. Taylor, Bucky, and Elliot were mediocre, Paris and Ace were boring, and Mandisa was just bad (and it hurts to say that, cuz I love Mandisa). Of all of them, I’m most ready for Paris to go home. She’s more talented than Ace but for some reason she bugs me.

I want to keep all the judges. Half the fun of the show is rolling my eyes at Randy, watching Paula try to maintain some semblance of sobriety, and cheering for Simon (or screaming “WTF!”) If they get judges who actually give constructive musical critique, I’ll be too bored.
