American Idol 5/10

Flava Flaaaaaaaav! My son and I are crying with laughter.

Bo going for the ‘cool’ look ;). He looks like he could fit in the 70s, don’t he?

Oh, Bo…you’re fired.

Oh Bo. I love him, he’s so pretty.

Wasn’t that the Apprentice song?

I didn’t know that was a real song.

Um. Bo. Dude. You look like one of the Doobie Brothers or something. I think. Maybe you look like a frat rat dressed as a pimp for Halloween. I’m not entirely sure. But you sound better than I expected you to. Must be the shoes. Quite a lot of soul there. Bo’s record could be called “A Lot of Soul for a White Guy.”

He still did well…

Vonzell is back!

It’s the O’Jays. In one of the Apprentice threads I mentioned that the O’Jays kicked ass and somebody asked if I was insane because they didn’t know what I was talking about.

Vonzell, that was much better. Had me chair-dancing.

Whoo hoo! Vonzell is rockin’ the Thelma Houston! Oh … she didn’t do the “ooo ooo ooo” part at the beginning. Poor thing. I want to like her tonight, but she sounds like she is half dead and totally not into the song at all. … Oh, there you go! Picking it up at the end. Salvaged it. Good job. Not great, but pretty darn OK.

Bo and Vonzell did better in the second part than in the first part. Note: Just keep them away from country!

Funny thing is, both of Vonzell’s songs had almost the exact same message, but were totally different. The second song was much better.

Poor things over there. The O’Jays DO kick ass. They kick a whole LOTTA ass. If I may say so myself, you have excellent taste.

Oh, and Jaade, from way back when? Love TMBG. How can you not love a band that is so cool that they’re made into a Tiny Toons cartoon?

I thought they couldn’t sing the same song as somebody else…

Same here, then I questioned if I was just imagining Carrie earlier, or worse, imagining what’s happening now.

Nonono, it’s not the same song…Carrie clearly sang “baby”, while A-fed’s version contains the word “girl”. Completely different. [/Vanilla Ice defense]

What the – why are they letting two people do the same song in the same night? That – isn’t right. And something is wrong in the world when you’re getting upstaged by Anthony Federov. I almost feel bad for Carrie. This could have been a slam dunk week for her, and instead it was the complete opposite. She might be in trouble. A-Fed might be this year’s Jasmine Trias.

Damn. Anthony was good! Is it opposite week or something? … Woody Allen playing the lead in “Shaft.” There’s a mental imagine that even bleach won’t get rid of.

Oh … and in seeing the recap clips? I never, ever want to see Carrie’s tonsils in that close a shot. Ever again. Don’t make me cut you, cameraman.

Carrie Underwood - If You Don’t Know Me By Now - She starts this one much better. She also changed clothes…at least her shirt. It still seems kinda slow, but tolerable. I think the band wasn’t comfortable playing the country songs. She looks a little more stiff but not as bad as she has in the past. She hits one note that is just awesome towards the end - a few actually. I’m relieved at how much better this song is. Randy says it just didn’t work for him, it never got on track pitch wise. Paula says it was not the right song for her. Simon says it is one of the best pop songs ever written and he blames the band for the arrangement. He says that it was boring and lethargic. Why are the judges and I so completely opposite tonight? That’s odd…
Bo Bice - For the Love of Money - Aww, he thanks his parents…~melts~ Again, right off the bat - better performance. This song seems better suited to him. I like this performance even though he didn’t sing that much during the first part of it, really. He’s a natural performer, there’s no doubt about that. Cute look, cute glasses and he’s rockin’ it. His grandmother dancing? Cutest thing ever! The crowd really Randy says he loves it and when his record comes out he hopes that song is on it. Paula said it was his best performance ever. Simon says “terrible image, fantastic performance”.
Vonzell Solomon - Don’t Leave Me This Way - She also thanks her parents and it’s so sweet. She’s also completely changed her outfit. I think she’s a bit flat at the beginning. I am not actually liking this performance from her as well as I did the first one. She improves as it goes but she’s channeling Anwar with the bouncing for a moment! This song is not vocally challenging for her and I think she might get flak from the judges for that. Hmmm…no, didn’t really do anything for me. Randy says it was an excellent job and she raised the roof. He says America knows now she can definitely sing. Paula says she loves what she did because she does take risks and she does stretch her vocals. Simon says she pulled out all the stops and he felt tense for her. He says it was a lot better than the first song for him.
Anthony Fedorov - If You Don’t Know Me By Now - This is another decent song choice for Anthony. I really wanted Anthony gone tonight, as I think Vonz, Bo and Carrie should be the top three based on cummulative efforts but I worry after tonight’s performances. Anthony is really working it, some of the best songs he’s ever sang on Idol. The arrangement on this song sucked though. Hardcore. Randy says it was a much better version of the song, he worked it out. Paula says he came out with conviction and nailed it. Simon says that was a better arrangement and his problem is that you need soul to sing that song and came over like Woody Allen…something, I couldn’t understand because of the crowd booing.
Why did they sing the same song? That is odd…

rockle, leave the nightlight on inside the birdhouse in your soul.

The second round was much better than the first. From favorite to not so favorite performance: Vonzelle, The Hole, Bo and Carrie. The Hole did If You Don’t Know Me By Now the way it is supposed to be played-- milked for all of it’s cheesy goodness.
