American Idol 5/11 to 5/12

I just cancelled my DVR recording of Idol for the rest of year. Don’t care now.

Yeah, that sucked. Now I know how people who liked Daughtry felt.

My husband walked in as I was watching a Scotty performance, took one look at the screen, and said “Does that kid know he’s gay?” I thought he was joking, but he followed it up with “Look how he holds his wrists?” And damn if he isn’t the limpest-wristed kid ever.

Wow. I’m surprised by the reaction. I’m thrilled, personally. The whole Durbin-first-and-last stunt was such blatant producer manipulation, and I’m glad a combination of groundswell support for Haley and a possible rejection of being essentially told how to vote resulted in Haley staying around. I would have rather seen Lauren go, probably, but her “Anyways” was pretty good last night, and her fans were on alert from last week, so it totally makes sense that she was safe.

I am shocked that anyone was still watching because of James. To me, Haley is the one compelling thing left about this crap season. No one has ever had a run at ALL similar to hers. Almost voted out each of the first three weeks, gets a second wind, starts kicking ass, and ends up in the Top 3? Amazing- remember those first few weeks? She was dead meat!

I can’t wait for next week. Obviously, production wants a Scotty/Lauren finale, but I wouldn’t rule out Lauren getting the boot at this point…I’m excited!

I agree. James is ok, but his voice is thin to me. Haley is rather interesting and fun to listen to, so I’m pulling for her.

I wasn’t watching…did Scotty do any more cross-kissing?

(WRAL will never let us hear the end of this…so much for the local news for awhile.)

Whaaa…?!? I did not see that coming. Too much of the same ol’ shrieking in every song, I guess.

I haven’t watched the entire show yet, just the first two duets. No surprise they were both country songs since half the field can sing only that genre. Durbin busted out his inner Pat Green and was better than Scotty in the opener.

Dear America,

I know this comes as no surprise, but you really don’t know fuck-all about anything, do you?

That James leaves while Scotty stays should be evidence enough to have several million of you committed.

Love and middle fingers,
Hal

I’ve been kinda meh about this entire season. Between lackluster talent and blah judges I have really had a hard time getting any enthusiasm about this. Probably the only reason I have continued to pay attention to this season to this point is because I have been playing in the American Idol Pool Hal Briston has set up the last couple of years and I felt bad about not at least making an effort to do as well as possible.

Now? I’m done. I can’t stand Howdy Doody. The kid gives me the creeps for some reason.

I’ll see what happens next season but by my thinking American Idol didn’t jump the shark. It got eaten by it.

X Factor premieres in September, btw.

So I might get flamed for this, but I was never that impressed with James. He’s a good singer and seems like a really nice guy, but I sort of feel American Idol is by definition not “rock.” Keep in mind the show was called Pop Idol in its original incarnation in the UK. Rock, in my mind, is contradictory to the idea of doing singalongs for Ford and Coke. Every “rocker” on Idol comes across as faux rock to me, as others have alluded to upthread.

I did think the one show that seemed to attract more rock types was Rock Star. But even there, I still think the spirit of being a rocker rejects being managed and groomed by 19 Entertainment. It does seem to be a platform for launching pop stars. Just my $.02.

I will also admit I liked James even more as person as he got the news he was voted off. It hit him like a ton of bricks, and that was real emotion. Not sure if “Maybe I’m Amazed” is the most rock way of signing off, but again, he seems like a nice guy that deserves some success. I’m not sure if he’s really a metal/rock guy at heart though.

Oh, and as weird and non-connected as I feel about Scotty’s music, I think he is the most talented Idol contestant this year. He’s going to have a long career, methinks.

I don’t watch Idol really; my wife does. I do think X Factor will be more my cup of tea. The producers kind of screwed up by letting the crowd boo every time a judge says something critical. I don’t think there’s been an iota of useful, constructive (and unvarnished) feedback delivered since the Top 12, and that’s a disservice to the contestants. It’s been “you’re great, let America decide,” and on the occasion that Randy pulls his finger out and actually gives criticism, he’s booed like the villain in a bad Christmas panto. I think that got to Simon - not that it personally bothered him, but that people were so enamored/blinded that they couldn’t recognize that all artists, especially those on a show like AI, needed growth - or else they would have already been stars.

The chick who talked back to Randy, that irritating Jacob guy… they’re all examples of performers emboldened by the crowd response, because they blew off the judges’ comments, thinking that all they needed to do was to satisfy their fans and that’s it. So yeah, bring on X Factor. Looking forward to Cowell and Paula being together again!

Didn’t see the episode tonight due to other commitments, but this is shit. Just major WTF from me. I’m glad Haley was safe though. She’d be my #2 pick. I guess #1 now.

I don’t know why anyone would be surprised at this - When given the chance, American Idol voters have always gone with the safe, bland artists. The real surprise tonight is that Haley is still there. I’m glad she is, because she’s the best of the three contestants left, but still surprised.

I’m thinking that James’ votes might go to Haley now, and if she knocks it out of the park next week, we might see a Haley/Scotty final, with Scotty winning.

Dayum! Leon Russell use to be pretty.

But that performance is nothing like what Scotty did. He was prancing around like creepy little monkey. It may have been okay vocally, but I couldn’t watch it long enough to listen.

All I gots to say is:

:dubious:

I knew that was going to happen. I was braced for it. I was cool.
And Haley’s been really impressive lately. Girl’s got a gift.
But that James should have been beaten by both of them, plus Lauren? Oh hell no.

It’s hard to work up much outrage:

  1. I don’t vote. So me blaming “America” for having insipid taste in music is a tad hypocritical since I didn’t try and save them from their own bad taste.

  2. The show might suck as a competition because the voting is flawed, but it does work well to expose kids to an audience (and music producers, and artists) that they’d have never gotten had it not been for AI. Being a Top 10 finalist on American Idol should open some doors for them and get them past gatekeepers if/when they go to audition for Broadway/television/etc roles.

In short, being voted off 4th is hardly the end of the world for James.

This actually might be better for James’s career. What’s Slash up to these days? I could see another Velvet Revolver type of project where James could fit in.

As for American Idol, I’m done with this season. I don’t harbor any bad feelings about it because I also don’t vote and I was never all that invested anyway. But I’m surely not watching the remainder of this show.

I’m done, too. I don’t care a bit about any of the remaining contestants (though i may watch the finale to see if Scotty is last man standing). I am surprised they got rid of James before Lauren. I wonder if James’ issues with Tourette’s and autism, and his over-emotional reactions on the show did him in. America wants to see smooth, confident, ambitious stars win, not possible emotional basket cases, who might not be able to handle the pressures of fame…I wish him luck, I loved James and felt bad for him, hope he goes on to be happy and successful in life.

I never liked James and I’m not at all disappointed to see him leave. His performances the last few weeks have been distressingly light on singing talent and heavy on running through the crowd high fiving people.

Of course, I hate Scotty even more, but I also know that country music fans seem to create a groundswell of voter support (and generally ensure a successful post-Idol career) so I’m not surprised he’s still around.
