American Idol: 5/9-5/10

It’s official: Fuel offered Chris a job. Put down the razor-blades, Chris fans. It’s a happy ending.

For old fogeys like me, who or what is Fuel?

No, I read Television Without Pity. There are enough people there who do keep notebooks, and recite statistics constantly, that I’ve absorbed this stuff. Although I do remember the night when I said “No group with Chris in it can be the bottom 3,” and whaddya know, it was.

Mama Tiger, your first paragraph summed up why I didn’t like Chris. All he had was the best voice. He didn’t have Kat’s charm, and he didn’t have the sweetness in his voice that Elliott does, or the jazzy demeanor that Elliott has been showing recently. And Taylor is a performer all the way. Yes, you could say that he does “the same thing” every time, but that “same thing” is a trip! How many people could sing a cheesy disco song accompanied by a live band and make it sound like it was written for him?

And I don’t think Chris is hot. 'Course, I don’t think Taylor is hot either, but I’m not viewing Chris through the I-wanna-do-him filter that I think many women were when he performed. And if what Walter says is true, then that takes care of that. I heard about the Fuel thing on TWoP weeks ago.

Fuel is a hard rock band, I believe.
I like Taylor because he has so much personality, energy, a love of music and a willingness to let it all hang out. He’s fun to watch. Even my nearly-80-year-old mom gets a kick out of him.

From the very beginning I thought Chris sounded like the singer from Fuel. I don’t keep up with the entertainment news though, what happened to Fuel’s singer that they now have an opening for Chris?

Cite? All I’m finding on Google are rumors. Did the band really make him an offer?

DialIdol.com, which uses special software to allow users to call the show over their modems and register the call with the site, which is, which is, as far as I am aware, completely independent of the show, had Katharine and Chris as the bottom two, with Chris trailing as of late Tuesday night. They’ve been almost dead-on in the predictions for a number of weeks, so they seem to be pretty good at fielding a good representative sample of the AI voting pool as a whole.

So people didn’t like Chris this week enough to give him more votes than they gave the other contestants. Maybe they really liked him but thought he was safe, and goofed by feeling comfortable supporting others, maybe they thought he was doing the same-ol’-same-ol’ and got bored, or maybe they felt he was NOT doing the same-ol’-same-ol’ and got angry.

In any event, it was almost certainly the votes and not a fix.

DialIdol has removed a lot of the suspense from the show but on the other hand it’s also probably helped the show’s credibility. If the DI results were radically different from what happened on the show, I think the conspiracy theories might have some weight but I’ve actually been convinced by DI that the show is on the level (I wasn’t always so sure).

I was shocked that Chris was voted off. More shocked that Elliott and Taylor made it to the top 2. Don’t much care for Taylor. I like Elliott but don’t really connect with him musically speaking. I’m not into crooners.

Nonetheless, I’m glad that Chris was able to team up with Fuel. Sounds like a happy ending for all.

I see someone already posted about Fuel’s offer to Chris. Yes, it’s real they were just on Extra making the offer. That’s probably a good fit for Chris and quite a compliment that an established band would offer him lead singer based on his performance of one of their songs. “Apparently” they were just waiting for him to get kicked off to make the official offer. And they told him he would never have to song Elvis again.

So , now I am curious if he will take it. Obviously he has other commitments through the summer but a rock band would be a good fit for him and may work out better than trying for a solo career off the bat.

By the way, even Randy said on that same Extra show that Kat was the one who deserved to go last night based on the performances.

Well, wait a minute. All we know is that Fuel is going on an entertainment show and broadcasting an “offer” to Daughtry. Since when is a genuine job offer done on entertainment television rather than, you know, to the person himself?

This strikes me as little more than a publicity stunt to boost Fuel’s name recognition (Hey! We’re a household name! Hey! Guys?). I mean, how many more millions of people watch American Idol than bought Fuel’s last album? Not to say they’re not sincere in their desire for Chris, but it likely will do them as much or more good as it will do Chris.

Nobody’s reporting on what Chris has said about all this, which means he’s probably not allowed to say anything. I’d assume that Chris is still pretty locked into the restrictive AI contract at least through the top 10 tour this summer, and who knows how long after that. Will Fuel wait for him? Will their offer be attractive to Chris? When could they actually start working together? It’s a mistake to think this is a done deal until contracts are signed, and that could be half a year or more from now.

Since Fuel has basically posted open auditions on their website, it’s not a stretch to think they’d offer the position to someone with a fan base and name recognition.

Fair enough.

Like I said, I’m sure the desire to work together is sincere, for whatever mutually self-serving reasons. But when there are huge music industry contracts, lawyers, managers and other players involved, going from desire to reality is no short trip.

That said, I sure hope it works out for everyone. I would feel good knowing Chris won’t have to return to customer service for a while.
