Let me amend that by noting Taylor has never been in the bottom three (or bottom 2) and Chris had been. Since that’s the only data we have, we have to call Taylor the frontrunner, even without the results last night’s show.
Okay, that he wasn’t the frontrunner I’ll grant you. But I honestly do think he had the strongest, most consistent voice. I did not like him; I never voted for him; I was not impressed by his supposed originality; I didn’t want him to win. But I never thought he gave a bad performance. Taylor has misstepped on occasion; so has Kat; Elliott is weaker on some songs than others. And I’m so used to the people I like leaving before the finale or coming in second, while the show’s pimping pays off, I just never thought Taylor or Elliott would outlast him.
As for being in the bottom 3…well, Clay was never in the bottom 3; Ruben was once, and the judges acted like the world was coming to an end. Fantasia was, more than once, and Diana was at least once. Bo was once, and Carrie never was. So it’s not the answer to everything, but it doesn’t necessarily look bad for Taylor!
I thought Paris was by far the most talented singer this year – and better than most of the contestants for the past few years as well. She just didn’t market herself towards a big enough audience with her song choices and presentation (unless I’m wrong and a lot of AI viewers are fans of hip-hop/rap/whatever it’s called these days). If she’d stayed in the Billy Holliday vein (or maybe headed towards Ella Fitzgerald) (Betty Carter? sigh), we’d all have supported her more - but she is a Modern Teenager, so that’s probably expecting a bit much.
At this point I’d love to see Elliott win. He’s had some weak moments, but on his best nights he’s been amazing. Plus it’s delightfully unexpected.
Hey, I don’t like Kat but she’s not a no-talent like Nikki McKibbon. How that chick lasted 'til 3rd is beyond me. I think Kat does have talent but I think she needs a lot of work on performance, she smiles through pathos and she overdoes songs to a ridiculous point. She needs more coaching on her performance than Chris, Taylor or Elliot but she could have a career if she can work that out. For that matter the Top 5, at least, should all have decent music careers ahead of them if they get the right support.
I am upset about Chris but not surprised, as others have said he’s not really in the Pop Idol mold and not winning will hopefully let him have a more suitable career for his voice. Still I was hoping that someone different might win this year and shake things up.
Out of curiousity, who is “vote for the worst” been pushing since Kellie left?
That’s exactly what I was going to say, in almost exactly the same words as I was going to use. Why are you in my head, Harborwolf? (Scary in there, isn’t it?)
I think Chris has gotten his usefulness out of Idol (exposure) and now he can move on and not have his first single be something along the lines of “A Moment Like This” (for those who are new, that was Kelly Clarkson’s first single). That said, I think Taylor would be better off not winning, too. I can’t see him really singing the crap the previous Idols have had to sing, either. It’s just not his style. Elliott and Katharine would do best with that style of music. Elliott would benefit the most by winnning, by far, and I really hope he does. Katharine can be the next Jessica Simpson, except have a pushy mommy instead of a pushy daddy, and marry Tommy Mottola.
It was pretty funny how shocked Chris and Kat were–she is something of an automaton since she didn’t look happy or shake or cry. I think she may have been petrified that Chris was going to kick her ass right there on stage. She looked scared to hug him.
It was funny too watching the retrospective. It reminded me of American Dreamz (it will be an honor just to be on that stage=I want to win so bad I’ll climb over the dead bodies of my competitors to get there) when they had Chris saying how if it all ended right then it would still be the best thing evah. Yeah, you say that then but as things progress of course you get hopeful, and in his case a little arrogant. I’m still sad to see him go because he was my favorite. I also cringe at the idea of him having to go on that schmaltz tour.
Giving the extra song to Taylor was very strange. Witness the power of the B-list celebrity live request
Why I think Chris got kicked out is because he sounded exactly the same, week after week after week. His performance never varied unless he was forced to vary it. He’d stand there, head tilted slightly back, eyes giving the camera that Death Glare, freaky lighting and flames behind him. And then sometimes he’d grab the mike stand and stalk around with it a bit, but everything else would remain the same. And his singing style was also exactly the same. He never varied it unless he was forced to. And as far as I could tell, every single performance was completely, totally, and utterly emotionless. He could have been an alt-rock robot, for all the emotion he put into each and every song.
Frankly, although I think everyone on the show has a style they like to stick to, the ones who vary it a bit more often are the ones who go farthest. I liked Chris at first, but it got downright boring watching him do exactly the same thing week after week after week. At least Taylor and Elliot change it up a bit, and Kat tries to. She’s still stuck in that music-school-stage-musical format that should serve her well, but Taylor has shown a lot more different styles than anybody else. And Elliott, when his nerves aren’t rendering him paralytic and turning his vibrato goatlike, is just amazing in the way he emotes.
Nice to look at is one thing – that’s why Papa T. enjoys Kat’s performances so much – but it can’t overcome performing like an automaton. Fortunately for Chris, he has a sizeable group of fans who like his style, so he should do fine. But for the rest of us, the ability to change and adapt is one thing we’re looking for in an idol. And Chris just hasn’t shown that.
I have to respectfully disagree with that. Taylor sounds the same every week, too. He’s been just as indulgent as Chris in some of his song choices. His stage presence is either to dance around spastically on the fast songs or stand there and look constipated on the slow ones.
I also don’t see what people are talking about when they whine, “He sounds the same every week.” They all do. That’s called their voice, and that’s what they sound like. Chances are they’re going to sound that way for a long, long time. Every song Taylor sings of someone else’s is going to be Taylor singing someone else’s song until he comes out with one of his own. (I’m not trying to pick on Taylor here. Anyone could win at this point and I’d be fine with that.)
This should have been completely predictable…here’s why:
AI voters pick their favorites in Week 1, and hang with them until the bitter end. So the singers that progress are the ones that can pick up the votes of the Dearly Departed. So who was most likely to pick up Pickler’s and Paris’s votes? Not Chris…that’s for damsure. That’s the problem with being the only rocker, but one of 3 males.
But he was forced to, and did. He really rocked out on that one rock song I didn’t know (when Simon said he crossed the line  ). He slowed it down and made the hideous “Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?” palatable.
As mentioned, each person is going to sound similar across genres, because they have a unique voice. I also agree that he didn’t have the best technique–no formal training, but if he gets some they can make his voice stronger.
I just like him because he says his wife is his hero and idol. And he’s hot.
I have a very hard time beleiving that the producers didn’t fix it somehow so that Katharine stayed. An all-male final three would probably not be so great for ratings, and I suspect that the PTB on the show made sure it didn’t happen.
On the other hand, now I don’t have to feel conflicted. . . I can just cheer for Taylor with reckless abandon (we Birmingham folk have to stick together).
