I’ve got to hand to Elliot. The poor guy has been an underdog from day one, and yet he still hangs in there, week after week after week, working his ass off, nver embarrassing himself, never sucking and always getting enough votes to stay in it. Back about 8 or 10 weeks ago I don’t think many people would have given him any good odds of making the finale (ahead of Chris, no less). He’s likable too. That Bono performance from Chris last night made me think this show was starting to go to his head a little but I never get the sense that Elliot feels anything but humbled and lucky.
Way to go, America. First you (re?)elect Bush, then you vote out Chris. I wonder if Simon still thinks that America always gets it right.
At least the dial idol results prepared me for this, but I am not happy about it. It seems the odd numbered seasons now have a tradition of sending the wrong person home 4th. I am also freed up for the rest of the season since I am not invested enough in anyone else to bother to vote for them or care who wins.
I do like Taylor and I hope he wins and when he wins I hope he shouts out “I’m not prematurely gray - I’m 45 freaking years old! So there!”
But I won’t be watching for that, I’ll be watching Lost.
Hee! Here’s hoping.
But now I think Elliott should win. Shoot, why not? The only thing Taylor has over him is experience and confidence. Elliot has the pipes and the likeability factor. Kat is great but I don’t think she should beat either of them. It’s a bummer that Chris is gone, but no matter who went home I would have been sad, so the only upside for me is that it wasn’t Elliott (or Taylor, or Kat…)
I’m not too worried about Chris. There are thousands of rock bands who would love him to be their lead singer. I couldn’t really see him warbling whatever pre-fab crap they would have made him sing on the official AI release anyway. Go forth and Rock, young Chris…
Krap!
I liked Chris a lot more than I ever liked Kat.
Ah well, Taylor’s still there.
I was almost proud of American for keeping Taylor and Elliott in the top two.
Then I was confronted with the fact that, yes, beauty over talent. Ugh. And the worst part is I can’t even vote for Taylor anyway.
Pact with Satan?
Another one here who’s done with this. Perhaps if Skanky McScreechy gets the boot next week, I’ll check out the finals, but I can’t see Elliot surviving.
'Eh, what the hell…they’ve yet to have a truly deserving Idol winner, so I’ll fearlessly predict Kat taking this all the way to the title (and setting me up for another offseason of railing about how terrible the show gets towards the end, when the truly talented start dropping off).
Last night, I went back to mostly listening without looking at the screen. Objectively, Kat was pretty bad. Just ridiculuously overdone on “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You.”
The guys were OK. I’m not real enthusiastic about Taylor, but he’s OK. Kind of the vocal opposite of Kat & Elliott, in that he just sings it all straight through.
I was torn between wanting Chris to lose, so he’ll be humbled, & listen when people tell to learn to use his diaphragm & stop tearing up his throat before he ends up with David Foster’s voice; or at least to make the Top 2, so he’ll have the recording contract, & people all around him trying to help him succeed who will drum into his head that he needs to use his diaphragm & stop tearing up his throat before he ends up with David Foster’s voice.
Ahem.
That’s a bit harsh. I don’t like Kat and would really prefer she not win but I think calling her skanky is off base.
It should be “Pretty but Souless Automaton McScreechy”.
Well, at least maybe Paris and Chris may get their CD’s out sooner than whoever actually wins this stupid contest.
Every season has an OMG ITS THE END OF THE WORLD!!!@! moment. I find the hysteria very amusing.
Somebody’s been drinking…
I’m not seeing that much hysteria.
Not here, no. I was reading some other forums. There are some very funny meltdowns.
I haven’t been drinking. I can be incoherent even when completely sober.
This is unreal.
I didn’t like Chris, personally, but for gossakes, he was the best! He was the frontrunner! This is, honestly, THE most shocking elimination on AI ever. It’s not a patch on Tamyra, or LaToya, or Constantine. He. Was going. To win. And he got knocked out at FOURTH! This makes no sense.
I just saw all the air go out of this show. Yes, I’m going to keep watching, because I love Taylor and Elliott equally, and if they end up in the final 2, I’ll be so torn I probably won’t vote. Which is another problem that this creates: Taylor and Elliott have overlapping fans, so there won’t be anywhere near as much suspense in that final 2 as in a Chris/Whoever finale. And the viewing numbers have already fallen off since Paris left; this may well be the least-watched finale ever.
I simply don’t understand. Mr. Rilch says everyone must have been so sure Chris would win, they didn’t vote, but that still leaves more people voting for Kat than for him, and that makes no sense. You could see, all through the show, that she knew (or “knew”) her head was on the block. And shoot, I thought John Stevens was the master of jaw-dropping in season 3! She truly did not see that coming, any more than anyone else did.
And just for a second, I thought, “Well, maybe there was an arrangement, to free Chris up so he could accept that offer from Fuel.” But if there was any kind of shenanigans, he damn sure wasn’t in on it, judging by his stoneface during the farewell reel.
I actually had this spoiled for me on another board. Not a board having anything to do with AI or even TV; just, someone made a comment to the effect of “I can’t even talk about this; I’m so upset that Chris got voted off AI!” I thought about berating them for not taking into account that there are people in other time zones besides East Coast, but I’m not a reg there, so I didn’t. I just put it out of my mind and convinced myself it was a prank.
And one last thing. Kat, stop smiling. “Are You Lonesome Tonight” is not a song you should be smiling when you sing it. Pull out a nosehair; stick some onions in your bra or something. You have to emote, dammit.
Chris was definitely my favorite. I tape AI usually. I watched both performances for Taylor and Chris and fast forwarded through the other two. Elliot does absolutely nothing for me, I don’t understand his appeal at all. He just sounds so blah. I hope good things happen for Chris.
I think she passed Chris on sympathy votes. She was really the only one harshly critiqued and I had a feeling that would give her an extra push in votes.
They are contractually forbidden to.
I guess I’ll be the lone wolf here and say, YAY!!!. He’s pretty, but he can’t sing for shit, didn’t seem to take any of the advice the professionals gave him, his death stare through every song was as inappropriate as Kat’s smiling through every song, he was cocky and arrogant and out-of-date. Good riddance!
Go Elliott!!
I think it’s precisely his arrogance that means he’s going to be the rare AI contestant to get a career out of this - I predict he’ll do better than the eventual winner, even if he doesn’t end up a humongous star. That sort of cockiness and self-assurance can only be an advantage in the industry, especially since he’s got the talent and a good fan base to back it up.
That said, I’m not (too) sad that he’s gone. Go Elliott!
Hi, everyone. I would’ve responded sooner, but I had trouble finding something to comment on.
No, seriously. Four capable singers doing even more flippin’ geezer music?? You really expect me to muster the will to discuss that?
Anyway…I thought Chris might go this week, so I’m not the least bit surprised by the outcome (at this point it could’ve been anyone, really). I mean, if he went before Ace, I’d be stunned, but the fact was he was just slightly in over his head at this point. He’s been out of his element many times, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he was sick and tired of it by now. And if you’ll remember, his popularity has been up and down quite a bit…remember the Bo Bice Scare, and he was in the bottom three once after that.
He did a great job lasting this long. He’ll go on tour and build even more publicity, and then he’ll get on with his life, which has absolutely jack zippo to do with churning out stupid manufactured pop fluff in a studio. For the life of me, I can’t see what’s wrong with any of this.
Yes, exactly the same deal as Kellie Pickler. Just call me the eternal optimist.
As for who’s going to win: I know it can be anybody, but I’m giving the edge to Elliot. Katharine is feeling a backlash and starting to fade, both at the absolute worst possible time. The old whatsername-who-finished-third-in-the-first-one trap. Taylor’s a riot to watch…which means that the last thing anyone wants is for him to have to produce music in a format where he can’t be seen. Elliot, frankly, has all the advantages here: A man is due, he needs this more than anyone else, he has the most pleasant voice of the remaining three, he’s been very humble and likable throughout, and pop is a good fit for him.
Still debating whether to watch next weeks show. I mean, it’s not like it’s that important…if you ain’t locked in by now, you ain’t never gonna be locked in.
