American Idol down to three

Kat has never once given me goosebumps. I still remember Fantasia singing “Summertime”; I thought THAT was the best performance I’ve seen on this show.

This show was more fun a few weeks ago, when Paris and Chris were still in it - I still think Paris had the most real talent of any of 'em. As a group they were much stronger than these 3 individuals. I don’t think it can be argued that the “weaker” contestants were winnowed out, merely that someone had to go home.

When Katherine began Over the Rainbow, I thought that she had finally found her song. And then she mangled it in the middle with her overwrought vocals, and she lost me.

Kat needs a good, tough vocal coach to strip her of all the trills and vibrato and shit that all teen-aged girls think are the mark of a good singer. She’s got a nice voice, but she relies too much on all the fluff.

I thought the beginning of Rainbow was nice. I have a theory that when she sings in the low end of her range she is concentrating so much on hitting the notes, that she can’t be bothered to embelish. This is a good thing, and should happen more often.

And that achy voice breaky crap. And the fake twang. And the shrillness. And the blank stares. And the bitchfaces. Blech.

If I’m remembering correctly, her mother is a proffesional vocal coach.

Yeah, I thought this could be a new drinking game: A drink every time Taylor says “Soul Patrol!”

It got to be irritating after a while.

Sorry, I just can’t work up any excitement about the upcoming final.

Well said. Also, the smiling. I half expected her to whip out a couple of pom-poms at the end of the blues song: “Yay blues!”

I like Taylor best, but Kat’s losing tonight has become more important to me than the final outcome of this thing.

Furthermore, I thought Over the Rainbow was the worst performance I’ve heard by anyone so far. I was thinking that Simon had picked the most tired song on earth just to sabotage her, but if she had sung it simply and sweetly she could have pulled it off. Instead, she tried to tart it up. Also, when she sang the word “heard” (there’s a land that I heard of) her voice changed completely. It was like demon possession.

If Taylor and Kat are in the final two, I think I’d rather watch Lost next week. You know, the one time Randy actually makes some constructive criticism about Kat and he’s right (“Sometimes you should just sing the melody.”) Simon interrupts him and Kat hears nothing of it. Though I’m beginning to get the idea that she doesn’t care what the judges think of her performances, because she thinks she’s already perfect. But she’s not. I mean, smiling while singing the blues? Are you kidding me? Why haven’t the judges said anything to her about this? Good grief. And I’m so sick of Taylor’s facial and bodily contortions while he’s on stage. Elliott just disappointed me, and now he’s going to go home. I don’t think the finale will be worth watching.

:frowning: My MFing VCR didn’t tape the way I set it to, so I missed it all :frowning:  Dare I watch clips with the sound turned up at work??

I can’t believe I missed that! Very cool.

I agree. I hated Fantasia but I still had to give it to her for that performance.

What kind of remarks did she make? Her smiling and eye-fucking the camera are what get me.

I didn’t like the mangling of “Over the Rainbow” one bit.

Kat should just stay on her butt when she sings. I thought her Rainbow was lovely, but her Black Horse and the Charry Tree was even better. Her voice is just gorgeous when it’s smokey and intimate and she loses the diva gymnastics.

Best performances of the season:

Taylor - Trouble
Paris - Work it Out
Kat - Black Horse and the Cherry Tree
Elliot - Song for You [this is an honorable mention. I like Elliot and he put his heart into this song, but then I went back and listened to the original – by Leon Russell, folks, not Donny Hathaway – and Elliots version sounded overwrought. He’s the most personable of the three and though I like his sound the least, I’d be happy for him if he won.]

When Randy and Paula criticized her first song, she said, “Wow, you guys are really being hard on me these last couple of weeks” or something to that effect. Randy then told her that maybe she should just try singing the melody sometimes, but Simon told her he thought Randy and Pauler were being a little harsh (Ha!) because she didn’t choose the song yet sang it well. So then she was, like, all happy & stuff.

Taylor didn’t sing “Trouble,” Elliott did.

 With good reason, Kat!

Yes, but I don’t think she gets that. They keep telling her she’s overdoing it and she does it anyway. Oh, and when she said it, she kind of teared up in a “You’re so mean to me” kind of way.

Dial has it too close to call.

Missed everyone’s first song. Thought Over The Rainbow was great. Wanted to smack Kat during Nothing But the Blues.
Taylor has never been in the bottom 3? Boy, I bet Simon just loooooves that. This season he predicted Taylor to be gone before the final 10, the Pickler for the win AND Chris for the win. More like marketing hopes than actual predictions.

There have been two songs performed on the show with that title. Taylor did Ray LaMontagne’s “Trouble” several weeks ago (That’s the one where the chorus goes “Sa-aaa-aaa-aaved…by a wo-maaaan”).

:::crosses fingers and sends “C’mon Elliott” signals:::

I retract what I said late last night about Elliott using his own name in his last song. On further reflection, that took some stones, in his position. It’s not the same as if Chris did it, or Taylor or Kat. He’s not one of the annointed ones, so what’s the harm if he self-promotes? And this was after Simon told him goodbye, almost in so many words.

I want him to get through tonight, not only because I like him, but also because I hate to think that Kat will get through, and then win on the sheer strength of being female. I’d like to say that tonight is merely a formality, and Taylor will win regardless, but final 2 is when a lot of people come out of the woodwork and vote without having seen an episode since the auditions. I can see them voting for “the girl” simply because she’s hot and the guy is “funny looking”, and I don’t want to see that. Taylor has earned this; Kat has not.

DialIdol is predicting:

Eliot or Kat tonight. It’s a virtual tie by their measuring.

Please let Taylor be kicked!

I seriously don’t get the massive Kat hatred. Her voice is easily one of the best on the show. They’ll work with her on the rest and you can’t see her on the radio, a CD, or an iPod anyway.

Listening to her and Elliot back-to-back reminds me of Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow singing together. When they’re singing at the same time, her voice crushes his.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Elliot and he was better than most of the others as well, but I don’t get that he gets a pass for being wooden, uncomfortable, and off the damn tempo while she gets blasted for “eye fucking the camera” and “smiling through a sad song”, and “trills and vibrato and crap”.

On many of those songs, if she doesn’t “tart it up”, everyone blasts her for a karaoke performance or for “not making it her own”. It’s kind of no win, isn’t it?
