American Idol down to three

Does Kat comprehend the meaning of any of her songs?

It’s a tough song for a young white chick from the burbs.

Gotta say that Kat had the best song of the night with Somewhere Over the Rainbow, so I’m afraid it’s goodbye for my Elliot.

Taylor proved he’s the best of the final three.

DialIdols had Kat over Elliot by half a percent. I could only get through 3 times.

 My reaction was just the opposite. I wasn’t going to bother to vote, but as soon as Kat did that song, I had to. I’ve heard some decent versions of that song by singers other than Judy Garland, but I didn’t think hers was one of them.

I didn’t think anyone would top Eva Cassidy’s version, and nobody did.

I thought the laid it on a little thick for Kat, just as they used to for Chris. My question is, do they do it to push a contestant through, or do they do it to create an artificial “upset” and to convince people they ought to be shocked?

You know, I think the show did a real number on Elliott. For judges’ choice, they give Kat and Taylor stripped-down treacly old spine-tinglers and pimpy camera angles, and they give Elliott…a mid-tempo discoey song.

It should be Elliott next week instead of Katherine…but it won’t be.

I think Kat ought to give Simon a big wet kiss right on the mouth for giving her “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” She kept the histrionics to a minimum, I and thought this allowed her to sing a pure melody for a change (sorry, I don’t have the musical vocabulary). Just like Fantasia’s rendition of “Summertime,” I think this is the home run Kat’s been looking for, and is the song that the voters will remember.

Poor Elliot.

Okay, I had it on in the room and I listened a bit but I didn’t really watch it closely and I did not vote. I have to agree with AuntiePam, I was not impressed with Kat’s Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I thought it was overdone. Since I didn’t watch it I can’t say whether or not she was still Miles O’ Smiles during her songs but I would guess that hasn’t changed.

I thought Elliot and Taylor sounded good but Taylor sounded too much like Joe Cocker in that song … he didn’t “make it his own”.

Well, like I said I didn’t vote and I won’t be wasting my time attempting to watch the results show. I expect that Kat will make the finals just because I don’t want her to.

This is the only episode I’ve seen this season, so I’m basing my opinon solely on those three performances, but… I think Taylor has a future. On SNL. Because that looked to me like a parody of a lounge singer. Also, if he said “Soul Patrol” once more, I was going to put my foot through the television.

Based on the song choices, I can only assume that everyone hates Elliot. Including Elliot.

That Kat girl isn’t too bright, is she? She didn’t want to be compared to anyone working today, so she chose instead to invite comparisons to Ella Fucking Fitzgerald? If there were a just and merciful god, she’d be voted off of the planet, as opposed to just American Idol.

This board gets way too nasty for my taste. You guys enjoy the rest of the season.

Sigh…How to vote, how to vote?

I wasn’t going to vote for Kat at all, but on the strength of “Rainbow”, I devoted ten minutes of dialing to her and got through once. That’s it for me, though. She only impressed me this one time (well, “Bringing Out the Elvis” and “Black Horse and Cherry Tree” were okay, but not awesome), whereas Elliott and Taylor have impressed me many times.

The thing is, even though she’s from LA, I don’t really think of her as my homegirl. The only geographical bias I have towards her is a) it would be a good thing if someone broke the pattern of the final two always being from the south and b) if she is final 2, I could theoretically go to her party on the night of the finale. But only theoretically, because I’ll be out of town! All in all, I don’t like her enough to want her in the final 2. She had one good night, but too many missteps earlier in the season to be final 2 material.

I hope Simon is wrong about Elliott. I don’t think he had a bad night; I don’t think he’s unworthy of the final 2. It’s just unfortunate for him that Kat finally brought it, and that he had to follow Taylor’s second performance. I’m giving most of my votes to him, but saving some for Taylor. I like his voice; I like his demeanor. I like him. I don’t quite see him winning, not after tonight, but I’m voting for him on the strength of all his performances.

Taylor, Taylor, Taylor! SOUL PATROL!!! I don’t care how many times he says it: he, unlike Chris, has earned the right to cheer himself! On all three of his performances, he was streets ahead of the other two. If he doesn’t get through tomorrow, or doesn’t win next week, this thing is officially rigged.

Agreed. Taylor has given the most consistently watchable, fun and interesting performances. Elliot has a nice voice but he just doesn’t move me. Kat sounded not unlike a mortally wounded animal tonight. She’s cute and can sing, but has no personality I can discern.

Taylor is a one trick pony, but he chose the right song to end on, and it was a good arrangement.

Elliot was bored; he didn’t connect with any of the three songs. Yesterday I thought he was gonna win; tonight I think he’s going home.

Kat. That’s the Kat I’ve been looking for since the beginning of the competition. When the song choice was announced, my first thought was, “This is gonna be her night.” About halfway through the song, I thought, “Simon is gonna declare this the best performance of the competition.” And he was right. Unfortunately, the pressure is getting to her, and she’s lost her grace under pressure. Her sarcasm and exasperation is going to cost her some votes. She needs to realize that she is NOT, in fact, as mature as she will one day be; and that she sucks at choosing songs; and the feedback she gets is the most valuable gift she will ever receive.

Simon is about the most artistically corrupt guy I can think of, but he needs to choose the songs for her first album.

And what’s with Clive Davis? Those song choices sucked. He murdered Elliot with Journey. And Springsteen’s entire library is open to him, and he chooses “Dancing in the Dark”? He needs a little euthanasia.

Elliott just seems wooden to me. It’s discomfiting to watch him.

Taylor is pretty consistent. I’ll repeat my comments from last week - he’d be great to see live in a small venue, but I don’t think what he offers would go over as a hit on the radio or an arena-sized show.

I liked Kat on most of “Over the Rainbow.” She’s got good voice quality and can hit the notes. What bugged me was the arrangement/stylization. I don’t expect artists to slavishly follow the sheet music or imitate the best-known recording. But when deviations from the written melody and phrasing seem like they’re just there to prove they can be done, they detract from rather than enhance one’s presentation. I think that if she’d stuck closer to the way it was written, it would have been a more powerful and gripping performance. I know I would have enjoyed it more.

I thought Randy really stepped in it when he criticized the song choice for Kat’s first number - seeing how the evening’s featured guest made said choice. It looked like Randy tried to backtrack but I don’t think he got anywhere.

Forgot to mention a few other things:

So cool that Taylor copied the DitD video by pulling Paula up to dance with him.

Didn’t catch, the first time, that Elliott added his name to his last song. Not exactly cool.

Kat should wear miniskirts more often.

Am I the only person who did not like Over the Rainbow? All those vocal histrionics got to me.

Then again, I. don’t. like. Kat. Period.

SOUL PATROL! SOUL PATROL!

No, you’re not. Kat ranks right up there with Carrie Underwood. Nice packaging, nice voice, no personality. While she did better on rainbow than she has on most songs, it was far and away NOT the best performance in Idol history for me.

And if they’re smart, that’s exactly what they’ll do with him if he wins. Treat him like Norah Jones. He’s got a following after the show that’ll help sell albums, and the low key approach will help him keep that following.

Elliot is going home tonight. He was good through all three songs but he never had a moment. His last song just fell flat. I’m not sure what it was about it, but it lacked.

Katherine really nailed “Somewhere over the Rainbow.” And I can’t blame her for smiling through her last song. She was probably still glowing off of song 2. I’m a little biased as I am totally crushing on her. McPheever indeed. :o

Taylor is my pick to win this thing. Great performances every night. I’ve been hooked on this season after seeing the twitchy, grey haired blues singer back in the beginning. At this point, he could sing Achy Breaky Heart, Man I feel like a Woman, and Honky Tonk Badonkadonk and I’d still vote for him.
