I’ll try to include names from now on but this early in the season, I still don’t know half the names. I’ll at least try to give a descriptor, though (“kooky-eyed girl,” 'Backup singer") until I learn them all.
If you ask me, and I know you didn’t but I’m saying anyway, vote for the worst is having a big impact if dial idol is correct. And Dial Idol has proven to be pretty accurate.
Sundance leading and Jersey Girl in second? Sheeyah, right.
I agree. I am in the Eastern time zone, but I TiVo my tv shows and never watch tv live (who wants to see commercials?). Last night I was about an hour behind the rest and so 80% of the thread was nonsense to me because I had no idea who anyone was talking about.
Someone with a better memory than me can verify, but it seems like every season there’s one or two people who obviously aren’t up to par with the rest of the contestants, yet hang on week after week because of some quality other than talent that resonates with the voters.
With that name, how can you not vote for Sundance Head? Hell, he’s about the only one of the guys I even remember.
Was this really necessary?
That was my favorite moment, the replay of that clip.
Simon: I won’t remember any of you.
Paula: Oh, I will.
Simon: Which one?
Paula: LOOKS DOWN AT THE PAPER! Amy.
Yeah, so memorable you have to check your notes.
And get rid of whatever that rat’s nest is on your head, Paula.
I’m resorting to digs because I fell asleep and missed Melinda. I’m glad to hear she did as well I hoped!
There have been several mentions of Paula’s new 'do in this thread and though I’ve wanted to, I’ve been putting off commenting on it until I could place what it reminds me of. I still can’t place it. I mean, Paula’s always kind of reminded me of a chihuahua, but this new hairstyle has me thinking maybe it’s some other kind of dog she looks like now. Lassie? I just don’t know.
At least this was a 90% entertaining night. It sucks, though, that 4 excellent women are going to not make the finals, with their places taken by 4 truly mediocre men – who will immediately get Pagonged (to mix reality show metaphors).
Yeah, we laughed.
My evaluations:
Stephanie Edwards A+ Great voice. Great showmanship. Good commanding stage presence. This is what happens when the song wells up from the bones and comes out of the mouth.
Amy Krebs B- Much more suited for Nashville Star. Not a bad voice, but there’s just no there there for pop music.
Leslie Hunt B A very good voice reminding me of the rendition by Carole King. Needs some work on stage presence and interpretation.
Sabrina Sloan A+ Very surprising. Excellent command of the stage. Great interpretive emotion. Steady voice control.
Antonella Barba C+ There’s a difference between a concert and a recital. This would have bowled them over at the Miss USA talent competition. But at a pop concert, people would fall asleep.
Jordin Sparks A If she hadn’t been planted on the X, she would have scored higher. She’s almost there in terms of commanding the stage. But just ever so not quite.
Nicole Tranquillo D+ Gruesome, frankly. She looked tortured and bored all at the same time. Voice was flat. Works for Bob Dylan, but not for her.
Haley Scarnato C- Would have gotten little more than polite applause competing for Miss USA. Fairly good voice control, but lacking interpretation. Movements were a bit clumsy.
Melinda Doolittle A+ Obviously a superb singer with full command of the stage. There will come a point in time, however, when she will need to drop the “thank you for not hating me” vibe. It’s too Picklerish.
Alaina Alexander F Would have been great in a pig hollaring contest. Voice was strained and flat. Song sucked. Emotions were fake. Terrible.
Gina Glocksen B- If I had a dollar for every person who could sing loudly, I’d be rich. And if she could get a contract for doing that, so would she. Still, decent interpretation. Some potential if she finds control.
LaKisha Jones A+ She’s no Bianca Ryan, but then neither will anyone else be for the next two hundred years. Great voice with good control. Full command of the stage. The upcoming makeovers will benefit her. The contest is hers to lose.
Quick, Liberal, before the edit window closes…could you insert the song titles along with your excellent commentary? Until I get the names straight, it’s helps. ("Oh yeah, the one who sang “Natural Woman”. ) And alternately, I’d never heard of some of the songs, and am curious.
To my mind, take various parts of the Papillon, Shih-Tzu or Yorkie and stick them on the back of her head.
Here you go:
gigi
Sorry. Next time, I’ll try to include the song titles. (I often don’t know them, so I’ll have to take some time to look them up.)
ETA:
I do list them in order of performance, though, if that helps.
Thank you for those. All very nice, but I think the Yorkie is the closest. Paula needs a new groomer … er, stylist.
[Hijack]I want a Papillon so bad. I drool over them every time I go to the pet store.[/Hijack]
Well, that was certainly a helluvalot better than Tuesday night was. The breakdown:

The earlier in the season, the more impact VFTW is going to have.
Let’s say (and I’m just picking a number out of my butt here) VFTW callers will cast 10,000 votes each week. With more singers to choose from, America’s votes will be spread out thinner, and those 10,000 VFTW votes will have more impact. As we move on and the field thins out, VFTW will have less and less of an impact.
I didn’t get to watch until after basketball, dammit. Too late to vote.
LaKisha and Melinda were awesome, but Stephanie was great too. It’s too bad she was first to sing.
Great performances! It’s hard to choose. Stephanie has the Idol look, Melinda has the sweet and humble vibe, and LaKisha has the daughter/motivation. Guess I’ll vote for all three.
Didn’t AI already filled it’s quota in that department with Fantasia.
Consolidating the useful information provided above, we get the definitive set list:
Stephanie Edwards “How Come You Don’t Call Me”
Amy Krebs “I Can’t Make You Love Me”
Leslie Hunt “(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman” (Carole King/Aretha Franklin)
Sabrina Sloan “Never Loved a Man The Way That I Love You” (Aretha Franklin)
Antonella Barba “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” (Aerosmith)
Jordin Sparks “Gimme One Reason” (Tracee Chapman)
Nicole Tranquillo “Stay”
Haley Scarnato “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now”
Melinda Doolittle “Since You Been Gone” (Aretha Franklin)
Alaina Alexander “Brass in Pocket” (Pretenders)
Gina Glocksen “All By Myself” (Eric Carmen)
LaKisha Jones “And I Am Telling You, I’m Not Going” (from “Dreamgirls”)
