Do people actually watch for the random eliminations or despite them? If I watch the elimination show (which is about half the time) it’s despite them. I hate the gimmicks and the sing-outs and the general viciousness of it. I just find it difficult to believe there are very many people who really want it to be that way.
On the other hand, this was the first season where someone sang it so I could actually understand the first verse. Not that that’s necessarily a good thing!
Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell
Jimmy Rogers on the Victrola up high
Mama’s dancin’ with baby on her shoulder
The sun is settin’ like molasses in the sky
Something else that puzzles me is why the contestants are divided by sex. What if the most talented are all women? What if the top two women got more votes than the top six or eight guys? Doesn’t seem fair that one of them should be eliminated.
Good point. I think it’s pretty stupid too.
Looking back, I think they changed it after season three. In that season, this was the top 12:
Fantasia Barrino
Diana DeGarmo
Jasmine Trias
LaToya London
George Huff
John Stevens
Jennifer Hudson
Jon Peter Lewis
Camile Velasco
Amy Adams
Matthew Rogers
Leah LaBelle
Notice that there were eight girls and only four guys. Every other season has had an even number of guys and girls. I guess I can kind of see why they do it. If there’s only a difference of one or two contestants, it’s not a big deal. But when it’s lopsided like it was in season three, they run the risk of having only girls in the competition from the top eight on and potentially losing some viewers. Just my two cents.
So I’m a bit behind the times and I’m finally getting around to watching the girls. I’ll just bring up something that I found funny. Sabrina sang the heck out of her song and then Ryan asked her about song choice and she mentioned that she didn’t want to sing a ballad because they haven’t worked in the past. What type of song did the next girl sing? A ballad. How did she do? Horrible.
I just found that amusing is all.
I’m curious about something. Does Idol have people to help them pick songs and come up with arrangements and let them know when something just isn’t working? I know they do a little of this with some of the celebrity guests, although I doubt they really tell them when they shouldn’t sing something. If they do have someone to help in this capacity why didn’t that person stop Paul from signing that horrible song?
That fairness thing… I’ve seen it brought up several times, in various Reality Shows. The complainer wants the Nth worst contestant eliminated first, then the N-1th worst contestant, the N-2th worst and so forth. If, say, the N-5th worst contestant goes out first, that’s seen as unfair.
But the point of the show is really NOT to rank the contestants from best to worst. What they want is to end up with the single BEST contestant. What order the rest get peeled away in really doesn’t matter.
Of course, as a listener, it may suck that a ‘bad’ singer gets to hang around and serenade us more times than a ‘not as bad’ singer, but ultimately it doesn’t matters just so long as the BEST doesn’t get eliminated.
No, but it was the only way I knew to describe my top pick. If that sounded racist, or fattist, or gap teethist, I apologize.
But, shit.
She is: fat, black, and her two front teeth have a major gap.
It was not meant as an insult.
After I posted it, I did realize I should just LOOK THE SHIT UP, which I did,
After that I immediately went to Google and found her name, and added it in.
So sue me.
Holy crap, y’all should take a look over at the TWOP boards. Antonella has crazy photos out there of her doing all kinds of adult things. Sheesh.
I thought this girl was coasting by on looks and an average voice. She definitely blew chunks during her performance… man, she was horrible. I remember the girl that got bumped instead of her - she sounded much better. That really sucked for her (bumped girl).
I’m not an old fuddy duddy and I think it’s reasonable to expect that there might be one or two photos of her cavorting with a beer in hand around. But homegirl has several risque pictures out. So far I’ve seen:
[ul]
[li]“American Beauty” style photo with her nude and the strategically placed petals[/li][li]Boozing it up at a party[/li][li]Topless at the beach[/li][li]Topless in a pseudo-lesbian make-out scene[/li][li]Wet t-shirt photos at the WWII Memorial in DC[/li][li]Giving a guy a hummer[/li][/ul]
All of which is indicative of really poor judgment if you ask me. I’m trying to be understanding - it’s 2007 and every kid has a digital camera nowadays, but how is it that she has so many of these that fly in the face of the “wholesome AI” image that the show tries to cultivate? She seems a little too willing to pose for these pics.
Most of the aforementioned activities are not beyond the pale for a 20 year old, but one that wants to be a star should be a little more thoughtful about what one poses for… don’t you think?
If you’re curious, take a look at http://www. antonellabarbapix. com/ (Broken link so it’s not clickable, but get rid of the spaces and you should be in business. Sucks to have friends, or ex-friends who would make these pictures public, but again, you might want to be careful about flashing your bits to people you don’t absolutely trust 100 percent not to sell you down the river.
If there are pics on the 'net with a cock her mouth, she’s GONE.
Oh, yeah, WTF are the TWOP boards?
Television Without Pity.
If those pictures are real, Antonella is going to catch a lot of crap for them and I feel terrible for her (she’s not a great singer, don’t get me wrong).
I live in fear of the day I back my way into enough fame where people are actively searching for my skeletons. Everybody has them and I wish people wouldn’t be so hypocritical about them. Very few people have the foresight to weigh every action they take against any potential fame they might acquire in the future. Taking a photo like that is a pretty big screw up but that really is all it is.
If the pictures in question are real and she gets kicked off the show, I’ll stop watching out of principle. Let the poor kid have the second chance Frenchie (?! that right?) didn’t get. I mean come on, she isn’t that talented to begin with, let her get voted out on her own.
Yes.
Because this is another aspect that’s not entirely fair. The contestants choose songs from a list. Favored contestants are more likely to get the song they want. Less-favored contestants are sometimes told “Oops, we couldn’t get the clearance for that after all,” or “Oops, that’s for the group sing on the results show.”
And there’s also the possibility that of the songs Paul had to choose from, that was his best option, and he would have been worse on others. Some contestants are just more adaptable. I wouldn’t have thought any one person could pull of BoRap, but Constantine did. Kellie Pickler, the following season, did not (although she sang a different segment of it). Who knows – Rudy might have done a better job on “Careless Whisper” and still be on the show.
What sort of “clearance” do they need? I thought you could perform any song you want, so long as you pay the royalty. I don’t think an artist can say, “Hey, Smith can sing my song but Jones can’t”. Can he?
Some artists do have veto power. Others charge a heckuva lot in royalties. (IIRC, there’s only been one Beatles song performed on the show ever.) And on a theme night, like “Disco”, rather than an artist night, the list might not have two songs by any one artist.
Finally got an eyeful of the Jersey Girl. Why? Why would you take pictures? Especially if you KNOW you want to be in the limelight?
These pictures do not, however, change my position one iota on Jersey Girl. Well, maybe a little. Not only does she suck, she also blows!
I thought about this. Putting myself in the Wayback Machine, did I ever take part in parties, hijinks, etc. that I’d be embarrassed to see photos of today? (I’m 34.) Well, yes. But that was more of a HS thing. By college I figured out that it was best to avoid some people and some places. The other thing is that I had aspirations and family members who would kick my ass if something really embarrassing ever got out… just in case I was ever seriously tempted to run across campus naked.
As a future parent, it reminds me to pass along these nuggets of wisdom:
[ul]
[li]Every picture of you might end up on the internet one day.[/li][li]If you want pictures to spice up your love life, get married first. Once that camera goes click he’s showing his buddies at least, if not the whole world![/li][li]If you want a career in the public eye, think. Unless you want a career like Paris Hilton’s.[/li][/ul]
As soon as I heard this I thought of Frenchie. From what I remember she wasn’t even naked, she was modeling lingerie for larger women or some such thing*. Now if Frenchie got kicked off for that and there truly is a pic of Antonella with a cock in her mouth then Antonella should be gone, otherwise it will be much more obvious that they are a bunch of hypocritical weightists. Heck the only reason Antonella is still on is either due to the Vote for the Worst votes or a large number of guys are hoping she’ll stay around long enough for more pics to surface. She sucked … pun not intended it just worked out that way.
There are lots of young talented people who go through that crazy phase of their life without having pics of them taken topless or with cocks in their mouths. I don’t think she should get a pass for being young, wild and drunk and showing a lot of poor judgement when what Frenchie did that got her kicked off was infinitely less inappropriate.
*From what I remember I think the producers tried to say that Frenchie was 17 at the time, therefore underage, making the pics technically child pornography. Frenchie adamently stated she was over 18 at the time.
Oh, I get that, don’t get me wrong, and that is exactly the sentiment I’ll pass along to my children. Taking naked pictures of yourself is asking for trouble, we all know this, but when you are having ‘fun’ sometimes you aren’t thinking as clearly as maybe I am and you are now. Cut the poor girl some slack, she made a mistake, and it seems a bit silly to kick her off the show simply because the world now knows she’s a sexual being.
It’s silly.
