I think it was the dig Chris made toward Il Divo. I’m not sure they’ve been the commercial success that Simon had hoped for.
I only listened to the show last night, so I can’t comment on annoying facial expressions and gestures. I also didn’t vote because I don’t want to get emotionally invested in anyone.
I was a bit disappointed that Chris Sligh took the “mouth off to Simon” low road, no matter how clever you may phrase it, Ryan is going to milk it and make it what it became, really uncomfortable.
Speaking of Ryan, he proved what a slimy Simon-bashing baiter he was when he tried to get Sanjaya to mouth off at Simon. He picks the youngest, sweetest kid who was probably raised in a culture where you show respect to elders and tries to encourage him to be a smart ass. I think the kid deserves a pass this time just for refusing to play Ryan’s game.
I didn’t watch the time but was it seriously 6 - 1 minute songs in the first hour? Okay, that is messed up. I know they have to have advertisers but that’s ridiculous. Either give the singers more time to sing the one song or let them sing two songs, one slow and one up tempo, and cut out a lot of the fluff and commercials. The show is one big ad for “Cingular is the new AT&T” anyway.
Minute-and-a-half, but yes, lots and lots of filler.
I wasn’t too sure either. I assume these are two of Simon’s projects he produced?
Didn’t Simon also produce the old Eddie Murphy album (My Girl Want’s To Party All The Time!)?
I don’t think it’s filler to give some background on the contestants. I was disappointed when they stopped doing those profiles on the final 12. Give viewers a chance to know these people a bit.
Yeah, but the backgrounds were only thirty seconds. And within that, only a third or so was new information in the form of sound bites from interviews. The rest was reruns of past shows.
I *like * that song.
Yeah, the carping and bickering was seriously getting on my nerves last night, too. Not least, because it gives my husband the opportunity to surf through nine other channels and then I might miss something important!
Il Divo is one of Simon’s pet projects – A pop-opera boy band kind of thing. As many times as people have tried to argue with Simon or insult him, that was the first time I think I’ve seen him look like someone actually hit a nerve.
Re: Ryan’s attempts to be an instigator, I’ve seen an ex-contestant (Carmen something?) on Joe Scarborough’s show a few times and she says that the producers encourage the contestants to argue with Simon. I think Seacrest is sort of doing the show’s bidding when he tries to goad people into talking back to Simon. They think it makes for better TV, I guess. Normally Simon’s got skin like an armored tank and any attempted smack talk bounces right off him, but I think Sligh found a sore spot with that Il Divo crack. He’ll pay for that, methinks.
I also noticed that Ryan was really making an effort to point out that he’s straight last night. Early in the show he made the, “I’m glad you’re on that couch” comment to Chris Sligh after his remarks about everyone looking pretty. Later he was trying to flirt with the girls and making sure Simon knew not to call him “sweetheart.”
Thanks to Tivo, I managed to get the whole dismal thing done in 1:20, and that’s *with * watching the uncomfortable and tedious banter. (gee, I love this show…)
Could someone post exactly what c. Sligh said about Teletubbies that set Simon off? Man, that was uncomfortable. And kept going, and going, and going…
Doesn’t anyone have a *voice * anymore? Where did all these nasally, thin, breathy whiners come from?
Sanyaja looks like a little girl. Get a haircut, damn hippie.
Bald guy (Phil?) – some people just shouldn’t shave their heads. In my household, he was called (a) Cancer Survivor (b) Lex Luthor © mannequin.
To add to what Diogenes the Cynic said, he also produced albums for the the Power Rangers and Teletubbies. Yahoo biography link
wait, are you commenting on my comment?
Yeah…“I love yoh.”
BeatBox Boy is Blake Lewis. I was so glad to hear someone choose a Keane song and then actually sing it well.
I guess we know why there was an ad for a Power Rangers movie during the show.
I had no idea he had a hand in anything Teletubbie related. Ugh.
Whoops. Actually, I totally missed that you had already talked about that. Sorry about that. I could swear I read the whole thread but I was reading in between work stuff and apparently didn’t read as closely as I thought.
Yep, definitely. He makes awkward comments about how smokin’ hot various women are on E! News Daily and it just sounds not quite right. He and Simon should get a room, but I don’t hink Simon is into it.

Of the twelve, I only liked five.
Of that five, none were great.

Not “tomorrow”, Thursday.
Elliott Yamin sang that Stevie Wonder song a ton better last year!!
Actually, I liked Chris’s version, unfortunately he didn’t quite pull it off. He ain’t no Timberline.
