If you include auditions? “Black Velvet”, “Natural Woman”/“Think”/“R-E-S-P-E-C-T”, 'Dancing in the Street".
Yes, that very cool video was for the song “Virtual Insanity”, which is what Blake sang last night, but it’s hardly new music. It’s actually 10 years old now. Damn, I feel old!
I’m really loving Blake. He has sung two songs that I LOVE and that I never thought I’d ever hear on Idol.
I also felt old when Ryan said, “Coming up, Sanjaya is stepping out” and I thought, “He’s going to sing Joe Jackson?”. And for Chris Sligh, Ryan said he was singing “Trouble” and my first thought was, “Why in the world would he sing that shitty Lindsay Buckingham song?”.
I’m like rockle, I don’t remember Taylor sining that song. I’m sure he did, but for some reason, I don’t recall it. I think Chris sang the hell out of it. He seemed lispy in the beginning, but seemed to keep it in check for the rest of the song. And yes, he should sing some Barenaked Ladies. Rockle, that’s a great idea!
In fact, whoever sings a Barenaked Ladies song (provided they don’t torture it) will automatically get my vote for the season (goat-fellating pictures be damned!).
Simon was fed up with Paula’s glurge at that moment, and Brandon gave his birthday wish at the wrong time. Simon is probably fed up with shoutouts and heartstring tugging in general. As he said, it’s a SINGING competition.
Simon also doesn’t have to be away from his family & friends for months on end. I don’t think you can really understand what these people go through for this show unless you’ve actually done it. That may have been the only chance Brandon had to wish his mom a happy birthday. And Simon thinks Brandon/Paula wasted airtime? His nonsensical spouting about “My mom’s birthday is in November, so happy birthday mom in six months” was just as stupid, IMO.
I was reviewing some old threads, and I realized that we need to be VERY careful what we wish for. Since I started watching “Idol” (2nd season, I think), I had been wishing out loud for someone to sing “Fat Bottomed Girls,” by Queen. Then we had Queen Week, and we got … Bucky Covington. Who was OK, but not spectacular. I have been hoping for “The Old Apartment” for several seasons now, and if my previous luck is any indication, then we’ll get someone like Sanjaya singing BNL, and we’ll never be able to hear those songs the same way again.
I get that the lyrics are supposed to be ironic, but the irony makes no sense in the context of a dedication to the troops, and on the surface, it still souns incongruous to say "this is for the troops,’ and then bust out ith the words “I ain’t missing you at all.”
Although his “I like puppies” made me laugh out loud.
Yeah, that was pretty good. I also liked his genuine surprise when Paula made a funny to Randy: “That was actually funny!”
I think that would say more about the other contestants than about Antonella. The scarlet letter that’s been hung on this poor girl is ridiculous, IMO. The gleeful verbal stoning on the TWOP boards is astonishing. This girl has not harmed anybody, done nothing illegal (except engage in some underage drinking, which I’d bet that 99% of every AI contestant has done) and is a legal adult. If anyone’s been unethical, it’s the ones who leaked those picture to the internets. All this stuff just makes me feel sorry for her. Any of her fellow contestants who would treat her shabbily because of those pictures would be displaying a much greater lack of character than Antonella has so far done.
The gentlemen improved minimally this week.
These were the best twelve (now ten) out of thousands? Really?
After the women BRUNG IT last week, this was the best these wusses could muster?
Some performances were notably better, some were notably worse, but none of them stood out against the overall impression of last Wednesday’s performances.
This year’s Idol will be a woman.
I find myself thinking this very often: this is the best they could do?
My prediction from watching previous seasons of AI: Sanjaya and Sundance are going to be with us for a while. Cute and memorable go a long way with the voters, and some better singers are going to be booted before those two because of that. A case in point would be Chicken Little from last season (I can’t remember his name).
Kevin Covais. I actually liked him better than Sanjaya for some reason. Both would have benefited from waiting a while before trying out for Idol though.
Wait, it wasn’t Joe Jackson’s “Stepping Out”? I didn’t see it, but I assumed from the posts that this was the version done.
Right. There’s no reason to try to convince yourself you don’t miss the troops, the way the guy is trying to front that he’s not affected by the loss of his girl.
No, it was Tony Bennett’s “Stepping Out With My Baby”.
I have thought this for a while… why hasn’t any male on Idol sung What a Good Boy or some other BNL song that shows off their range? Also, I would love to see someone cover Eddie Vedder/Pearl Jam,… Betterman?
Sounds like a good idea for a thread? What songs/artists would you like to see covered on Idol?
That sounds like a FABULOUS idea!
Actually, if that song–Irving Berlin’s "Steppin Out with My Baby–belongs to anyone, it’s Fred Astaire. Tony Bennett is just one of hundreds of singers who’s done it since.
I had a feeling someone would correct me. I know Tony Bennett’s version. I should have checked allmusic.com. Thanks.
When rockle imagined Sanjaya singing “The Old Apartment”, I actually thought of “What a Good Boy” and how someone like Chris Sligh might be able to pull it off.
Or “Brian Wilson”. To use the vernacular, he could totally rock that. I wish I hadn’t missed last night’s show, though I don’t seem to have missed too much…
