In case you were wondering, or living under a rock for the past week (as apparently I was), tonight’s guest judge-slash-mentor-slash-shill is Diana Ross. From AmericanIdol.com:
I’m not going to try to guess who’s singing what, but I hope it will be good. For reasons alien even to me, there is a special place in my heart for Miss Ross. I just really hope she doesn’t give anyone the Li’l Kim treatment tonight.
Gonna have to TiVo and watch later, as I have to go to my kid’s band concert tonight. Can’t wait to see the Diana Ross treatment, though. My gut tells me she’s gonna be HARD on those kids!
BTW, if you want a good laugh, go to iTunes and look at her “Celebrity Playlist”. It’s where celebrities offer up a list of their favorite songs. It can be really interesting to see what they like to listen to (Harry Connick, Jr. likes The Clash?!?).

Please, please, please, I said it last week and I’ll say it again, and maybe that will work: NO “Stop! In the Name of Love”. And NO “You Can’t Hurry Love” either, not even the Phil Collins version. Especially not the Phil Collins version.
OK, what are the chances neither will be sung? Not good. OK, one or the other, but not both. PLEASE.
I hold a warm place for her as well. But I don’t like her elitist attitude. Maybe the last few years have brought her back down to Earth.

I never noticed exactly how much Diana Ross sounds like Barbara Walters. My back was turned and I thought it was Barbara.
Brandon was kind of boring and forgot the words. He’s still pretty likeable, though and there are others who suck a lot more than he does. I think he’ll survive the week.
Well, at least we got Can’t Hurry Love over with. I can’t believe Brandon forgot the words. That wasn’t good at all-- even beyond the fact that I don’t like his voice.
Brandon: Oh dear, tonight is off to an inauspicious start. Flat the whole way through, screechy on the high notes, and even forgot the words. This does not bode well…
Sorry, gigi. That being said, I actually kind of liked Brandon. He’s very understated. Although I’m afraid he might be too understated. Still, I thought the judges were a little harsh, although not entirely wrong. At least give him some credit for going first, or something. I think he would have done a better job with a “smaller” arrangement – more piano, maybe an acoustic guitar, and less “big band.”
Also … I apologize for perpetrating a fraud. I thought Diana Ross was going to be a guest judge this week, but she was only a mentor. Disappointing, because her hair is fabulous.

Brandon was bad. Not quite Antonella bad, but not worthy of the Top 12. For a guy with performing experience it was even worse.

Not a fan of the Melissa song choice. What the hell song is this? I have a crapload of Diana Ross here and I’ve never heard that one. Meh.

Sligh is doing “Endless Love?” This song eats ass. He’s trying to do it more up-tempo but his pitch is off. Better in the chorus but not enough to keep the song from sucking.
I like Sligh, but this is horrific. This is cruise ship bad.

Sligh is destroying “Endless Love.” The Coldplay treatment isn’t working at all. Big bowl of suck so far. Diana has a great catalog, what are these people doing with it?!?
