Well, she has marginal talent and bumped at least one person who might have been a better contestant from the opportunity to make a name for herself. Imagine how the girl who was brought to the judges’ room and was told that “the journey ends for you today” feels, especially if she did the right thing by not posing half nekkid on war memorials, etc.
I know someone said “it’s a coincidence that the booted folks are mostly people of color, and the White contestants who get a bit of bother usually get a pass,” and that might be true. But let’s get meta for a second. We know that arrest, convictions, and incarceration rates are higher for, say African Americans, compared to Whites. (Okay, I will take off the dashiki and beret and drop my fist now.)
It boils down, for a lot of people, to an example of how pretty skinny White girls get a pass, but big Black girls get shown the door. Yeah, I’m talking about Frenchie in particular. I felt that they set the precedent with her case. Lots of famewhores appear on reality TV, but for some reason she stands out as one of the few that seems to have a lot of compromising pictures floating around…
Wait, wait, WAIT! I didn’t imagine Sanjaya singing “The Old Apartment” – not at first, anyway. My original statement was:
Bolding added. But what happened later was that I said this:
I don’t actually want Sanjaya to sing BNL – not any songs I can think of, anyway. I just want to clear that much up – I get myself into enough trouble as it is. Idon’t need any additional aspersions cast upon my character.
This is fucking terrible. She started off badly in the low register and now she’s getting shouty on the high notes. Carrie Underwood did very well with this song. Gina sucked, Randy is wrong, she SUCKED.
Gina better do better than The Pickler on Alone. Hated Kelly but she did that song justice.
Her backup singer was out of key and made her sound bad. I’m sorry to say that I liked The Pickler’s version better.
On review of the posts here, I see it was Carrie and not The Pickler who sang Alone. Ooops! I liked Carrie only slightly more than I liked the Kelly but only because Carrie didn’t prented to be brain damaged. Or was actually really brain damanged. Still not sure if Kelly was having us on.
I wasn’t thrilled by Gina’s performance either. Her timing seemed off in the beginning, and she couldn’t seem to stay on key. I’m disappointed, because I did think Heart would be perfect for her.
I do not remember Alaina. But then again, except for Gina, the melanin challeged did not move me at all last week.
She sounds totally off key to me. And, damn it, I agree with Randy again! I do not like agreeing with Randy since he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Even though I want Lakisha to go home, it’s not because I don’t think she is an excellent singer. She can do better than this. She should be tearing up this song and she isn’t. That doesn’t mean she’s going home.
P.S. When do they get the makeover? Lakisha needs work. It’s not like she looks bad but she could look fantastic with help. Especially her hair. I HATE her ugly plastic looking hair.
Alaina: Ouch. The original is still in everyone’s mind, and you definitely didn’t measure up. (And that’s totally ignoring the peculiarity of anyone other than the Dixie Chicks singing those lyrics.) Can we let her go home now? It’s getting cruel.
LaKisha: It may be just me, but I thought that was a crap arrangement of Midnight Train to Georgia. I never get tired of hearing that song, but that seemed blah – and how can I be thinking that about LaKisha after last week?
To me, Alaina and LaKisha just demonstrated perfectly the difference between artists who can and cannot control their voices. Alaina’s “Not Ready to Make Nice” was all over the map in terms of pitch and volume while LaKisha’s “Midnight Train to Georgia” got into smooth sailing territory very quickly. I certainly want to hear more of the latter than the former.
