American Idol -- The Finals

I think it was during Sanjaya’s performance that I turned to my husband and said, “That’s why I love this show. It’s a big cheesy pile of crap and we all know it!”

Wasn’t Antonella Barba in the final 12? I didn’t see her in any of the group numbers. I coulda sworn she stayed around for several weeks.

Jeez. O. Pete. She sounded like a bad karaoke of herself. I think she could have done better, though, if she’d just stopped prancing and playing to the audience and concentrated on actually singing.

So there I was, watching my tape…and the announcement was made some time after the tape cut off.
YouTube, rescue me.

People can say what they want about Taylor, but he’s very watchable.

Nope…she was the final female booted before the Top 12 were formed.

Fortunately, we were Tivoing, and even though we didn’t pad the record time, the tuner was still on the right channel and we could rewind through the buffer. Miracle of modern technology.

The Finale is becoming quite the spectacle, innit? I could see it lasting all day, with studio prediction shows & red carpet arrivals, like the Oscars.

And the 2 hours works better if you think of it as a big ol’ fashioned variety show (like Ed Sullivan) that just happens to have an announcement of Your New American Idol in the last 5 minutes.

And I really liked Taylor Hicks. It’s a pity, though, that his preferred musical niche is doomed to be swamped by Pop, and we’ll probably not hear much from him again.

Heh. I feel the opposite. Whatever I think about his voice, he is completely unwatchable. I have to look away because he’s just so creepy and irritating to watch.

I really didn’t need to see her kiss Ryan. For that long.

Bette Midler: :frowning: What the hell.

FWIW, here’s the opinion of an Idol n00b, first season I’ve watched:

  1. I thought the audition shows were painful. It’s a personal thing, but I don’t like watching people embarrass themselves; I get embarrassed for them and end up squirming. There’s too much intentional buffoonery (people acting like asses on purpose) and, worse, too much unintentional buffoonery (people who are pitifully bad, deluded they are good, and gleefully exploited by the show).

  2. I thought the Hollywood shows with the finalists were good (meaning, entertaining). I enjoyed watching the contestants, judging their performances, seeing who the guest would be each week, seeing who would leave.

  3. I thought the Idol Gives Back show was tedious filler. An altruistic idea, but I wasn’t interested in watching a telethon.

  4. I thought the final was overly drawn-out and painful. Bette Midler was terrible. Tony Bennett was not good. Plus, having never seen the show before, there were a lot of “finalists” and “former winners” performing that I didn’t give a shit about. The only ones I think are any good are Kelly Clarkson and Doughtery. And the “awards” were painful. Plus, I thought the winner was pretty much a foregone conclusion once Melinda left, so there wasn’t a lot of incentive for me to sit through two hours of only marginally entertaining crap.

Bottom line for me: I probably won’t watch it again. (Now let’s see if I eat those words next season. ) I don’t watch a lot of TV and this is a show you really have to make a point to watch every week. On balance, I don’t think I was that entertained by it.

But I am glad Jordin won.

Sorry. This was intended for the Pit.

The intentional buffoonery gets worse every season because people just want to be on TV and I have no qualms about watching and mocking them. You would have a point about the people who are deluded that they are good, if the show hadn’t been on the air for 5 years. They know what show they are auditioning for, so I can’t feel to bad for them. The only ones I feel bad for are the younger ones whose parent have told them all their lives that they shit gold* and really believe that they are good, based on their parents’ opinions.

Come back next season. It’s fun. It may not be prime rib, but it’s good to have a hamburger…twice a week for 5 months.

*I must have read that here and internalized it, because it’s far better than what I usually come up with.

Oooh, now you’ve got me curious. I’m headed to the Pit.

For the record, I just saved a copy of this post and put it in my Outlook Calendar for next late-January.

You’ll be back…they always come back!! :stuck_out_tongue:

Okay…I’ve been to Youtube, Google, Idol’s website, and still cannot find a clip of Jordin being told she’s the winner.

Anybody got one?
