I like the Todrick/Ochocinco comparison, except I like the latter and not the former. I think Todrick actually takes himself seriously, while Ochocinco doesn’t in the least. And if he did, he’d be really obnoxious.
Michael has one hell of an amazing voice. I’ve heard that song performed a capella by pretty darn good singers, and Michael absolutely killed that. Tremendous vocal control, very nice and controlled falsetto, and just such a nice voice. He knows exactly what his voice can do and does it well…he doesn’t yell, he doesn’t belt, he just sings really, really well.
Michael and Crystal are the two best in this competition, hands down, IMO.
I thought Aaron was the first one to wake me up all evening. It was good, but maybe its because i am a country fan.
Todrick: no. Nobody can ever be as good as Freddy so don’t even try.
Michael-what song was that? He was obviously the best.
Dio, did you think Casey’s song was difficult to sing?
I didn’t have an emotional response to Michael’s song. I was basically so surprised to hear that high voice coming out of that body. I’ll have to find it on the web and play it again.
I thought all the guys had a pretty good night tonight. Well…nobody had a true trainwreck.
I will go with Casey for the win tonight.
Necktat was OK
Lee was pretty good. He could play on whatever they call the Creed-Nickleback-Candlebox radio format. Can sing.
Clear loser was Aaron.
Toderick nailed the falsetto beginning but then skidded off the curve and down the ravine.
Big Mike-blehh.
Mullet had a good night, I never thought he’d last this long. Same for Tim.
Seriously? I can totally understand if what he did doesn’t work for you, but you don’t at least think that was a very good performance of a song and/or style you don’t like?
Ahh, I hope I’m not coming off too nasty. Different ppl watch the show and judge on different criteria. I’m just shocked that someone could watch the entire show and sum up his performance as “blehh”.
No.
I watched it again and still wasn’t moved by it. I guess it was hard to sing way up high like that, but it isn’t anything I’d ever choose to listen to. I find it abrasive. I found the Maxwell and Kate Bush versions online, didn’t like them either.
Yeah, I’m sticking with blehh. It really didn’t stand out to me. He sang competently, no wrong notes that I noticed.
I missed the recaps tonight and sometimes I like things better the second time through. If I didn’t have such slow internet I’d watch his performance again to see if I’m missing something. I’m not saying he was bad, if it was up to me Aaron and Toderick would both go before Big Mike, probably Tim and Mullet too.
I liked Mike’s performance but I didn’t get what made Kara cry over it…
Not that it matters, but I’m really tired of the audience popping up in a standing O after EACH AND EVERY singer.
C’mon. Show some discrimination. (Yes, peeps, sometimes discrimination is good.)
I’m not getting any of it any more. I thought big Mike’s performance was mediocre. Who cares whether he can sing falsetto? That performance did absolutely zip for me. As for Simon saying it’s the best live performance so far on Idol this year - seriously? Big Mike strikes me as a poor man’s Ruben Studdard.
Andrew Garcia is fading fast. I think Tim Urban and mullet-head outperformed him tonight. He’s gone from front-runner to middle of the pack at best, although you get the feeling he’s still got a killer performance lurking in him somewhere. Better dig it out fast, buddy.
Casey was the best performer of the night if you ask me. There was actually quite a lot of nuance in his vocal performance. But I really want to see him rock it out and shred a little guitar. This wussy balladeer stuff is getting really old.
I didn’t like the Queen performance at all. If you’re going to do a Queen song and survive the inevitable Freddy Mercury comparison, you either have to go way over the top like Adam Lambert (and have the chops to do it - like Adam Lambert), or you need to go the other way and completely change it into something new. Todrick’s voice isn’t powerful enough to carry the song in that way, and his dancing around wasn’t inventive enough or graceful enough to add anything to it. So… meh.
If I had to rate them in order of best to worst, I’d probably go:
Casey
Lee
Big Mike
Tim Urban
Mullethead
Neck Tat
Todrick
Kid
But here’s the thing - If I was going to mix these guys up with the top six men from the last two seasons, I think only one or two of these guys could even make it into the top half. And I think only Casey so far can hold his own against say, the top four women on this season. It makes me wonder if the judges didn’t stack the deck this year in favor of the women - the last few men who won American Idol haven’t exactly been setting the record industry on fire, y’know?
This is just a really, really weak field, with only Casey really standing out for me as someone who’s got anything to offer the music world. The rest of them are just bland and interchangeable.
He needs to do a song like ‘Memphis In The Meantime’ (or just about any Hiatt song).
Lee Dewyze - “Fireflies” - Wrong song for him - that’s a pretty, delicate little song, and he has a grittier voice. Weird. There was nothing special about that. Meh. 4/10
Alex “Boom Goes The Dynamite” Lambert - “Trouble (?)” - Unremarkable. There’s something irritating to me about young kids singing about how they’ve had trouble for all their lives. Mm hmm. The judges are right about him, I think - he needs to relax and get into the moment. However, if he can’t perform, he won’t be a performer. 4/10
Tim Urban - “Hallelujah” - That didn’t suck, but it didn’t move me. Probably good enough to keep him in. 5/10
Andrew Garcia - “Genie In A Bottle” - Okay, that’s creepy when a guys sings it - “You gotta rub me the right way”. That didn’t work for me. How about singing a boy song for a change? How about “How Far Is Heaven” by Los Lonely Boys? 4/10
Casey James - “You’ll Think of Me” - Keith Urban is a good place for this guy. Good song choice - it de-emphasized his sheepy bleat. Lite country is a natural for this guy. 5/10
Aaron Kelly - “I’m Already There” - Ooh, rough start. Oh, God, that isn’t good. The tween girl vote might keep him on, but he should be tossed after that piece of pitchy shite. 1/10
Todrick Hall - “Somebody To Love” - And we see the difference between what Freddie Mercury did and oversinging. That said, he had a chance to go for multiple power notes on that song and he jammed out. Good call, Simon - that was very Broadway. I’m going to start calling him Broadrick Hall. 5/10
Michael Lynche - “This Woman’s Worth” - This guy needs to sing some Luther Vandross. That was nice and powerful and good. Very good. Aw, he made Kara bawl. 7/10
Watching it on tape right now. Lee was good and that was the best Alex/Mulletboy has done so far.
Tim just finished and it was kinda meh for me. I think if he lasts past this week it can be chalked up to those pictures that popped up on the intertubes this week with his shirt off.
Casey v. Crystal in the finals.
Personally, I would send home Tim and Alex. Neither one has any vocal range or stage presence, and they’re basically playing not to lose. Aaron is totally boy-band and limited in his skills, but he works the stage better than either of those two.
Andrew is rapidly becoming a one-trick pony. It’s getting embarrassing how the judges hearken back to his one good performance week after week.
I think Todrick is more talented than he gets credit for, but his surly personal style may turn some voters off.
Casey, Lee, and Michael will be in it for a while. Casey’s performance last night was the first time he didn’t irritate me. He wasn’t nasal, and and I think someone must have told him that last week he looked like he was playing air guitar in the bedroom, so he toned it down. Lee and Michael are the only ones I actually look forward to. Lee keeps picking songs that don’t match his voice, though, which could bite him eventually. Michael’s found a niche, and I hope he doesn’t work it to death, but he’s got it going on right now.
I went back and watched some of David Cook’s performances last night after watching Idol and I just shook my head sadly. None of these guys even comes close.
What what what? I hung in there just long enough to see Casey, then drifted away. But I’d like to have seen that.
