American Idol week of 3/9 to 3/11

I am not confident that Crystal will go far. Dio’s rants are probably sounding from trailer parks across the south: she’s too cool, she’s too pierced, she’s too urban. They’ll vote against her until the get rid of her.

OpalCat - you are so right. just rewatch Cook’s “Hello” from the top 16 from his season - the vocal quality, the stage presence. certainly unmatched this year.

They can’t vote against her. They can only vote for someone else.

Any vote for anyone is a vote against 7 others.

She’s been the top vote getter on DialIdol (which HAS been very accurate at the top) every week that she’s performed. It’s a weak field, and there isn’t any clear cut, wholesome Christian alternative like there usually is. I think if any of the other girls (or guys, for that matter) want to start taking votes away from Bowersox, they need to start talking about Jesus.

Or “The Music of the Night”- here this guy has been doing rock all season, looking and dressing like a rocker, then comes out and does a Broadway tune dead straight and absolutely nails it. Jim and I agree that an acceptable response from him after singing that would have been to hold out the microphone and just drop it on the stage, and stand there with his arms crossed.

I don’t think he picked a Kate Bush song as much as he picked a Maxwell song that was originally done by Kate Bush.

And yes, going back and watching David Cook is making me weep for this year. Crystal and Michael are the only ones who even come close to his stage presence.

Agreed. I usually can’t stand Andrew Lloyd Webber tunes and find *Phantom of the Opera * particularly annoying . . . but I loved Cook’s version and actually bought the song off ITunes. I’m pretty sure none of the guys this year could make me like an ALW song.

Still, I do like Big Mike, and overall the guys didn’t suck nearly as much as they did last week. If I had my choice of who to send home tonight, it would probably be Alex “Whiny” Lambert and the guy who’s 12 years old and sang that goshawful song about the soldier missing his family or whatever it was. If not them, I’d get rid of Tim “Willie Aames” Urban. Or have him drawn and quartered as a warning to every future AI contestant that WE HAVE HEARD APPROXIMATELY 65,000 VERSIONS OF “HALLELUJAH” AND THAT IS QUITE ENOUGH, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

Its heartening to see I am not alone in realizing the greatness of David Cook.

BigB – I’ve seen David Cook and his fine band in concert three times now, and will go again whenever I can. He’s a super live performer!

A quick check shows that you’re wrong. This is the first time she’s been “top vote getter,” although there’s pretty much nothing but margin of error at this stage… and since there’s no way of knowing who the top vote getter is on the show, there’s no way to comment on the accuracy of DialIdol at the top.

It’s never been wrong about predicting the winner, and no one shown in the top 2 or 3 ever ends up going home.

When I checked DI the last couple of weeks, I always saw Bowersox at the top, but maybe the numbers changed later (I checked while the voting was still going on).

I hope you’re right that she won’t win, but I don’t see any other clear frontrunner. There are some that I like, but I like them more for their quirks than for their talent (Todrick, Siobahn). Maybe someone like Mike can overtake her. We’ve seen people come on late before. Neither Cook or that dude who won last year (I forgot his name already…Chris something?) were frontrunners early. This time last year, I was sure the winner would be fucking Gokey, so my predictions are worthless.

Kris Allen - he was a blank spot on stage for almost the entirety of last year’s season - he had a couple of really good performances, but that’s it. I still don’t know how he won.

No David Cook appreciation threadjack can be complete without Billie Jean. He does the Chris Cornell version and hits notes in a way that rivals Chris Cornell, one of the best rock vocalists of the last 20 years. I love that part at the end where he holds the note on “I” for an impossibly long time, and then takes it up a half-step!

He soaked up all the Christian votes after Gokey got booted. There was also something of a backlash against Adam Lambert towards the end of the season, for some reason.

At the time, though, Cook didn’t stand out. The performance looks better in hindsight because we know what he’s capable of now. Archuleta was considered the front runner and a shoe-in to win until “Music of the Night”.

Cook’s probably one of my favorite contestants, but he was mostly under the radar as an okay performer until Top 6. This season is looking mediocre now, but there could be a star in there somewhere, so I’m withholding judgment until next week at the very least.

First Time Ever I Saw Your Face melted this hetero man’s inner schoolgirl.

I loved Big Mike, and I don’t think Todrick is all that bad, and the guy right before them was okay. The others were just bland or a bit annoying.

I want Bobby Brady to go home.

I don’t know what it was the judges heard that made them all gush, but what I heard was an utterly soulless, dreadful, milquetoast rendering of Hallelujah. As if he was singing the song phonetically and had no idea what the words meant.

It’s unfortunate when everybody gets the same idea at once. Five guys in a row, doing ballads and playing acoustic guitar? Might’ve benefitted from some mix up.
