Wow, I never believed there would be a serious contender to out Shane Macgowan Shane Macgowan
It looks like she’s on the fast track to joining the 27 club. She needs to take some time off and regroup (no pun intended).
Exactly. People hear Rehab and they dismiss her because it isn’t a very good song. Those people don’t listen any further so they don’t see that she has written much better songs. She is capable of much more than what she showed on “Back to Black”, but we’ll probably never get to hear what she could have done. It’s a shame.
However, I think Amy Winehouse is a product of a system that can create and destroy “stars”… a system that tells the public who has those qualities you speak of. How on earth would we even know who this person is without the constant reminders of her daily activities? I think you, I, or anyone else on this board could have that presence and charisma you speak of if we were exposed to the same things she has been. Put a publicity machine behind her, a record label that makes money each time an album is sold, and her name gets shoved into our subconscious.
It doesn’t work that way. Hollywood is always trying to tell people who is the next big thing, but they can’t force it down people’s throats. The person has to actually have that thing that the big stars have. For example, they pushed Colin Farrell through the machine and it just wouldn’t take. There are many other examples I can’t even recall because that’s the point - you can’t manufacture what makes someone a star. You can manufacture what the person does. That’s why we were subjected to Britney Spears. They found someone who could be a star and created music for her so that they could make money off of her. You can’t do that with just anyone. See Ashley Simpson if you need proof. You can get some people to buy the CDs, but you can’t make just anyone into a star of the sort Spears is. Amy Winehouse could have been a star of that sort. Unfortunately, she turned into the Paris Hilton, famous for being famous, sort instead.

skank ho. If I was a guy I wouldnt fuck her with someone elses cock.
Why the fuck would anybody want to hit that, other than with a 10 ton trip hammer? Her teeth are falling out of her face from meth, her facial skin is so thrashed makeup doesnt even hide the ravages, her breath probably is worse than a medwaste can at a leper colony. God alone knows what diseases she has.
How can anybody NOT tell her she needs institutionalization and to be rehabbed. How can they let her walk around killing herself.
Yeah, she’s pretty revolting. That this is cause for celebration in our culture is sad. There is definitely a death culture contingent in our society, and they’d love to blow off of her fake titties.

Not in my opinion. I bought Back To Black, it has some good moments, but clearly the attention she gets is way out of proportion to her level of talent. It’s only because she’s a train wreck that we hear as much about her as we do. She’s the next Anna Nicole Smith, just not as unintentionally hilarious.
Yes, in a decade, Bill Shatner will be reading her name off on a new “One Hit Wonders”.

As far as I know I have never heard Winehouse sing “Rehab”, I did hear a version on the TV show Glee which I liked. But I have heard a couple other Winehouse songs on Pandora and was extremely unimpressed. I made a point to thumbs down all her songs after that. Personally, I just don’t see the great talent everyone claims she has/had.
I heard a recent news story about some woman caught smuggling heroin in her breast implants, so now I wonder if that was referring to Winehouse.

Duffy and Adele are considered at least in the same realm as Amy Winehouse, music wise (if not Winehouse wannabes), and they seem to be doing quite all right in terms of success and exposure. Assuming you’re looking for coverage of their music, not their clothes, how much they drink, who they’re dating, etc.
Agreed. There are a lot of singers (especially British ones) doing the retro thing like Winehouse. And a lot of them are pretty good.
But having listened to Adele’s “19”, Duffy’s “Rockferry” and Winehouse’s “Back to Black”, it’s really no contest. Back to Black is the best of the bunch, by far, but Winehouse is doing her best to make people forget she was ever anything more than a professional drug addict.
The only song I’ve heard of hers that I thought was terribly good is the unadulterated version of Love is a Losing Game.

This is the first song I’ve ever heard by her as I am listening to it just now.

Refresh my memory: Is there any reason aside from her all-too-apparent death spiral why this woman is worthy of any attention?
The girl is a walking disaster, but damn, she can sing.

Yes, Love is a Losing Game is very good. Here’s the fully produced version. The song is heart-wrenching, all the more so because of its parallels to Amy’s life.
Now that I am hearing her music, it makes me more sad about it.

Yes, I see myself buying her CD’s. Maybe I’m way off the mark but I have the feeling her stage persona is her view of herself and not an attempt at visual branding. Not that it matters that she is naturally beautiful but she is deliberately taking a 60’s pop look and adding 90’s tat’s to create something that looks like a drag queen on a bad day. Add her new boobs and you have all the signs of self–loathing that her destructive behavior suggests.

Yep. I have quite a number of her songs in my meager collection and whenever I listen to any of them now my first thought is always *‘what a waste’, *because contrary to some of the sentiment in this thread, Winehouse is (was?) quite a talented song writer and performer. It’s unfortunate that her demons have gotten the better of her.
I have a bunch of her songs in my collection, too, and I don’t think she is all that fantastically talented. She has a nice Motown retro sound, and is a step or two above boring, but I don’t see any genius in what I’ve heard of her.

If you’d have this riding you in bed, I wouldn’t be surprised if your penis became liquefactive necrotic when you woke up the next day.
Oh.
My.
God.

I just had to pop in and thank you aruvqan; I’ve been giggling over this line for the past couple of days. Many thanks!
