I am taking My Beloved on a two hour train ride on a 1920s style train ride in Chehalis this Saturday for our 39th Anniversary, and later this year we are going to Worldcon in Anniheim.
What were/are your anniversary plans?
For a few years, we treated ourselves to dinner at a Japanese steak house. But in recent years, we mostly do nothing. Number 43 is coming in December - apparently that’s either the travel, flannel, or opal anniversary. Maybe we’ll come up with some way to combine the three.
Last year my wife and I made a road trip out west to spend our anniversary at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. We were supposed to get married there 5 years ago, but the Mangum wildfire was burning in the Kaibab National Forest between Jacob Lake and the North Rim and had the only road in blocked at the time, so we ended up getting married at Horseshoe Bend instead. We made it to the North Rim this time, stayed in one of the original cabins and enjoyed a wonderful anniversary dinner at the lodge. It was a good thing we did it when we did because two weeks later the Dragon Bravo fire came through and burned the lodge and most of the cabins (including the one we had been in) to the ground.
Oh, and on our way out there we made a stop in Durango, CO to ride the steam train through the Animas River Gorge from Durango to Silverton and back. We had previously driven the Million Dollar Highway between Ouray and Silverton towing our camper, and I must say taking the train ride was a much more relaxing and enjoyable experience!
For our 20th, which we celebrated this year, we planned a trip to Chicago. Despite the bad timing (we were closing on a house) and that fact that my FIL was there (not bad, just not what I envisioned), we had a good time. We stayed for 3-4 days in a home-swap situation, a lovely four bedroom townhouse. My Aunt and Uncle came to visit and I saw my high school best friend while the men took the kid to the Sears Tower.
It was a nice time, but we had to tap out after 3-4 days because our kid is exhausting.
We would definitely go back.
I just realized-We are doing this Chehalis train trip today and the Amtrak trip to Anaheim for Worldcon later this year for our 39th.
How the hell do I top it for our 40th??
Odd. This site says 34 (which our next one) is opal. I think the similar sites only agree on the big ones.
30th anniversary was during the COVID recovery period, so we didn’t go anywhere, but bought watches for each other. 31st ended up being special - we spent a week in a bungalow on the beach in San Diego. Lot more expensive than the watches. We don’t always make the bigger celebration on the milestone anniversary. No idea what we’re doing this year, but at least we won’t be working. We decided some years ago that we always take the day off for each birthday and anniversary.
For our 20th, we went to Scandinavia. We dropped our kids off at the bus for sleep over camp and spent the night of our anniversary on a plane.
25th we road tripped around Iceland, again spent the anniversary evening on the plane.
This year was #27 and we had a low key dinner out.
Plans for our 30th have not been made yet.
