I can’t help it. I’ve conquered addiction to tobacco and successfully avoided addictions to liquor, drugs, gambling, shopping and internet porn. How bad can discussion boards be?
I’m hoping to keep it free forever. I’m covering our current hosting right now, but a saint who wishes to remain anonymous has offered us some high-end hosting on a VPS for free if and when we need it. And hosting is our only expense – I’m making the mods buy their own coffee mugs.
So you should never have to choose between online addictions.

As someone who has hit themselves in the head with a hammer, I resent that.

Just to ask, I’ve seen repeated references on other threads to TWO “other” boards. One is Giraffe’s. What’s the other?
And since I ask this question because I’m curious about this whole “other board” thing, I’m also interested in something I saw mentioned in another thread: one reason why “splinter” boards tend to go stagnant is because they don’t have a central draw that outsiders would know about, like the SD column. What are Giraffe’s and the other board’s founder’s plans to keep the new blood flowin’?

I don’t want to hijack Giraffe’s thread so if you want to ask questions there, I think it would the place for answers.
It’s a very good question. For now, the plan is to just give Dopers a second place to goof around and waste time, with sufficiently different rules and tone that it fulfills a different function than the SDMB. We’re bandying about some ideas for how to attract non-Dopers, whether its some sort of front page content or just a bunch of black vans and duct tape.
Worst that happens, we revert to cannibalism.
Wait a second - I didn’t see anything about cannibalism in the By-Laws! Isn’t that bait and switch?? I was promised milkshakes and footrubs - no talk of cannibalism. What ever happened to truth in advertising??
