Another SDMB fantasy football league

If anybody is planning on missing the draft (Sept. 3 9pm. CDT); I would suggest going through and preranking your top 100 players

Reminder, 2 days before draft.

Try to show up. It’s much more fun to have an interactive live draft than to have the computer pick everything.

Reminder, draft is at 10PM eastern tomorrow. As in roughly 22 hours, 40 minutes from the time of this post. Try to be 10 minutes early.

I was gonna, but already full. Could this be the first year in many that I miss out on?

3 hours out.

I was looking over the roster spots and I’m thinking 2 RBs for a 10-player league is too few (probably same with QB, but RB is more important). I’d like to see a last minute switch to 2 RBs, but it’s up to whoever is running it.

Well, we’re under 30 minutes. How do you get to the live draft window thing?

Give’er a minute.

The pain train is coming. WOO WOO!

I’d like to file a preliminary complaint against the Yahoo weekly projections. They’re undermining my confidence in choosing which of my 14 tailbacks to start.

Like tailbacks matter. What matters is which of your 4 defenses or 6 kickers should start.

Is there a way to see the record of how the draft went down? I want to discuss my draft, but I’d first like to see a list of who went where, so I could reconstruct who was available at the time, etc.

Yeah, one of the tabs at the top is Draft Central. One of the sub-tabs is draft results.

Aha, thanks.

My draft slot is 5th in even numbered rounds, and 8th in even numbered.
Feel free to comment.

So here it is:

  1. Peyton Manning

At first, I thought the 5 slot would be decent, but it’s really tricky. There are 4 clearly top-end candidates, and then after that, what do you do?

I probably blundered with this one. The two clear/recommended choices were Clinton Portis and Edgerrin James. I’ve never been a fan of Portis, and Washington has looked craptacular in the preseason, so I didn’t want to go that way with a top 5 pick. Edgerrin James is an elite back - top 2 or 3 in talent in the league, I think, but Arizona’s o-line is bottom 10. I probably should’ve picked Ronnie Brown, but I figured with Edgerrin James leaving, Peyton manning would be closer to his massive fantasy '04 performance than his '05 performance.

  1. Marvin Harrison
We’re already down to the second tier backs, and I draft again in 9 slots. I decide I’m probably going to get around the same quality running back then as I can now, but I might miss out on having an elite receiver - and we have 2 receiver starters and only 1 rb. Now, if we just have 35 Manning to Harrison touchdowns this year, I’ll get somewhere.

  2. Willie Parker
My choice here was really Reuben Droughns vs Willie Parker. This one I know pretty well, being a Browns fan and very up to date on the AFC north. My first instinct was to take the homer pick. Even on a crappy Cleveland offense, Droughns is solid in yardage points. However, Maurice Carthin (offensive coordinator) can’t manage to do anything in the red zone, and our rushing TDs have been last in the league for quite a while. I expect this to improve somewhat this year… but it won’t be the rushing TD machine Pittsburgh is. And with Bettis gone this year, Parker will get more TDs.

  3. Deuce McAlister
I was unsure about this one, but he was probably the best RB left on the board. I could’ve taken a good receiver here, and almost did (Roy Williams, although J Walker and A Johnson were still available) or Tony Gonzalez. I probably should’ve gone with Roy Williams. But he was probably the last of the quality starter backs on the board, and represented good value. I expect him to put up solid numbers despite Bush’s presence.

  4. TJ Whosyourmama
Solid pick, I think. There were still some lower end starter RBs available (C Taylor, C Dillon) but I was stocked on RBs. I wasn’t drafting my TE yet, because I have my secret weapon that’ll still be around later.

  5. Donte Stallworth
Boom or bust pick. The Eagle’s offense and McNabb’s skill set could match very well, and with the lack of receivers in Philly, he could have a very big year.

  6. Neil Rackers
Probably too early to draft a kicker, but I had most of my starting lineup complete and decided to take the best one. Other people started drafting kickers and defenses in this round so I didn’t jump the gun too much.

  7. Joeseph Addai
3 Colts picks out of 8. I think his skillset matches what the Colts do very well, and once he takes the job from Rhodes, he could put up big numbers.

  8. Kellen Winslow
I was shocked at how lowly he was ranked. Yahoo has him below most team’s second TEs. Yes, he’s lost a step, but he’s still definitely among the top half of starters - not the bottom half of backup TEs as yahoo seems to rank him. I’ve very much kept up with Winslow’s progress, and while he’s not going to put up gates-like numbers this year, he’s in a very TE friendly offense, still has above average speed, and elite hands. Based on how low he was ranked, I could’ve possibly picked him up a few rounds later, but I didn’t want to chance it.

  9. Terry Glenn
WR heavy round. Glenn has put up good numbers for quite a while, and while they may drop this year (more balls to owens, more run-oriented offense), they may not, as the offense may improve overall. Or if Terrel Owens gets released in week 5 for pissing in Bill Parcell’s cheerios, then Glenn becomes the clear #1.

  10. Byron Leftwich
I decided to get a backup QB just in case Manning goes down. He’s a good value in round 11, I think. Except I had a big brain fart, and didn’t notice that he and manning share a bye week. Doh. Contact me if you want to trade for him.

  11. Braylon Edwards
Seems like a homer pick, but not really. He looked really, really good before his injury last year, and he’s healing way ahead of schedule. He’ll get his share of TDs this year.

  12. Kevan Barlow
The Jets suck, but Barlow looks to be the starter. It’s hard to argue with getting a starting running back in round 13…

  13. Atlanta Defense
Possibly the best defense available, although I’m seriously considering using another defense as my main defense, I’d knew they’d be around later.

  14. Jerome Harrison
Homer pick, but this kid has been lights out in the preseason and will probably have a decent amount of recs and touchdowns this year. If Droughns gets injured, he’ll probably be the starter. He ran for 1900 yards in his last year in College, and compares very favorably (in yards) to Reggie Bush running against the same competition. He’s got “it”

  15. Vernon Davis
I expect big things out of him for a rookie. Good value for this round.

  16. Cleveland Defense
Aww yeah baby, here’s my real power house defense. Really. They’ve been consistently good at keeping low scoring games (unfortunately, we lose a lot of 10-6 games because our offense sucks terribly), but have been lacking in turnovers. I expect that to improve this year, with the emergence of Leigh Bodden (you’ve probably never heard of him before, but he’s the only corner Chad Johnson admitted shut him down, and he’s going to have a huge year), a better pass rush (Wimbley has a good shot at DROY), and a better run defense.

  17. Rex Grossman
I needed a QB to play Peyton’s bye week, and Rex might just take off.

  18. Ashley Lelie
Probably the best player available. He may explode in the Atlanta system…and he may not.

I was having connection issues last night so the computer picked the first ten rounds for my team.

Highlights:
Round 3) Chris Chambers. I was suprised too see that he fell to the 30th pick. I think with Culpepper he’ll have a career year.

Round 5) Reggie Brown. I’m really up on Brown (especially now that the Eagles have Stallworth) but he most likely would have still been available later.

Round 9) Mike Bell RB Denver. The Computer didn’t take my 2nd RB until round 9. :smack: Could turn into a real value IF he starts all year.

Round 10) Matt Jones. Leftwich’s new go to guy. Didn’t hurt that I got Wilford two rounds later.

It was in hindsight obvious we didn’t need 19 rounds (my bad guys) but here is my pick anyway.

Round 19) Brad Smith WR NYJ. He is going to be fifth on the depth chart, but my homer pick anyway. Mark my words he’s going to be a superstar in a few years; too bad this isn’t a keeper league.

Sorry I missed the draft. I was busy watching Invincible and thinking of how much the Iggles suck. I did pre-rank, though.

I think I did pretty good. I was 1 pick away from getting my beloved Giants for defense; now I have to play Miami in week one  If Eli reduces his INTs this year, I’ll be in the playoffs (assuming general good health).

I can’t believe you took a kicker and defense so early. The difference between your starting K and DEF and your back ups taken a full 7 rounds later is bordering on negligible.

Of course the other two rosters posted indicate a kicker run there, but I’d wager that those folks who ignored the run will reap the rewards of sticking to FFL convention.

The kicker was too high in my list - that I’ll grant (I wasn’t live to correct my error; fixed for my next draft). Defense I feel good about. First defense went in round 4 - Pitt. 4 more went in round 7 - NYG, Indi, Caro, Seattle. Surprisingly, several kickers went before me - I guess I wasn’t the only one on autopilot.

For both Omni’s edification and my own self-analysis, here’s my team, which was one of the last few to take a kicker (the notable exception being Chitwood’s Penance, who waited 'till the final round) and also one of the last few to take a starting defense:

  1. (8) R. Johnson RB

  2. (17) T. Holt WR
  3. (32) R. Wayne WR
  4. (41) R. Droughns RB
  5. (56) C. Taylor RB
  6. (65) B. Watson TE
  7. (80) D. Mason WR
  8. (89) J. Plummer QB
  9. (104) D. Akers K
  10. (113) Mi. Clayton WR

  11. (128) S. McNair QB

  12. (137) Philadelphia DEF

  13. (152) T. Duckett RB

  14. (161) R. Curry WR

  15. (176) E. Kinney TE

  16. (185) O. Mare K

  17. (200) San Francisco DEF

  18. (209) Tr. Brown WR

  19. (224) B. Stokley WR

A few notes:

  • The Torry Holt pick was an autodraft off of my queue, since I had a short computer crash in the end-first-beginning-second round. I like to go RB-RB normally, but like the Holt pick given this league.

  • I’m not sure how I feel about the Wayne pick, but I imagine it’ll work out. I had the three guys picked immediately before him in my queue for the entire round previous… and naturally all three were picked in order there (W. Parker, C. Chambers, T. Brady), and I’d have been happier with any of those three.

  • I love both Droughns and Taylor where I got them, though I probably would have been better served by taking McNabb instead of Droughns, Taylor where I took him, and then taking one of the ridiculous RB steals that went at the beginning of round 9… well, anytime before the beginning of round 9 (T. Jones and F. Gore). If I had known how the later RBs would shake out, I’d have done this for sure, since my big weakness ends up being…

  • Jake Plummer. Love him as a backup… not happy with him as my starter. But I missed Brady by one pick where that would have been exactly where I wanted him, and then each time I put a tier of QBs into my queue for the next round, they’d get eaten up in the picks prior to mine. McNabb was really my only chance to get a QB at appropriate round value, and I missed it… and so I end up with Plummer.

  • I love Ben Watson this year. As, what, the 7th or so tight end? And in the middle of the Round 6 TE Run? I love him in both of those respects, and I think he’s going to put up monster numbers. If Branch continues to hold out, I’d only rank Gates ahead of him; he has looked That Good between how he developed last season and how they’re using him this preseason. (So now watch him suck it up the whole year.)

  • I’m alright with my depth, some picks with potentially high reward (Duckett if Portis goes/stays down, Clayton if he does the Year 3 WR thing, McNair if he plays more than half a dozen games, and Stokely in the last round if anything should happen to Harrison or, god forbid, Wayne) guys in there. I’m fine with my kicker situation despite waiting; with McNabb back, Akers will be fine or better, and Mare has a chance to be gold again as well. I’m a little more nervous about my DEF: I got value for where I took Philly, but they’re unlikely to be top-5-material either, and then I missed out on the “OMG our rosters are so big let’s pick a second defense!” run and ended up with San Fran (home vs. Minnesota) for Philly’s bye week.

  • Good luck to everyone, and may as few key players as possible suffer terrible injuries this year

  2. (23) W. McGahee RB
  3. (26) C. Palmer QB

  5. (50) D. Driver WR
  6. (71) K. Jones RB
  7. (74) L. Smith TE
  8. (95) E. Kennison WR

  18. (215) Arizona DEF

  19. (218) M. Nugent K

I like Walker, Driver, and Gore. I think each one of them will outperform those picks in terms of value. I also like my quarterback situation.

Didn’t like the second half of my draft very much. I think I got a little dazed by the sheer number of picks and just started picking people willy-nilly. Usually I pick willy-nilly but not in a daze. I’m reasonably comfortable with this roster, all things considered. And yes, I took my kicker in the 19th round, as it should be. If there were 80 rounds I’d have taken my kicker in the 80th.
