AnthroCon 2009 - A Murry, Purry, Furry MMP!

blurf, blufr, blurfity-blurf

<looks up> See? I’m so blurfy, I can’t even spell it right.

We’re finding out one of the worst parts of moving - telling our friends and families. Telling our real family was easy. Pick up the phone, call Mom and say “Hey, we’re going to be moving in a few months. Oh, yes, I know I still need to send you some wedding pictures…”

It’s saying goodbye to the people we’ve adopted as family that hurts. People we’ve come to know as brothers and sisters and children, surrogate husbands and wives. We’ve gotten lots of comedic mileage out of a mixing of two gay guys and two lesbians - I’m K’s husband, and DH is C’s wife because DH was wearing a kilt and C was wearing pants (as appropriate for a Renaissance musician) at Faire.

So, we’ve told a lot of people in person, and we’ve told a lot of people by email, just so they can hear it from us first, rather than hearing whatever version of the story might emerge from the grapevine.

Meanwhile, the packing continues. Everything in our house can be categorized in one of four ways - pack it up now, keep it out until we actually move, throw it away or sell it. We’ve already sold at least half of our furniture, and all of the kitchen appliances have already been promised to various people. Works out well that our neighbors who were wanting to move have figured out that they can keep their house and rent it to (IIRC) their oldest son and move to a smaller new place without stairs. They’re going to need a patio furniture, fridge, lawnmower, rototiller, hot tub and dishwasher. He’s always been in awe of our quiet dishwasher. So, we’ve been happy to sell them all of the above.

Meanwhile, I think the truck is just trying to spite me. I swapped out the blower, and I think we’ve had a bad blower all along. From Day One of owning the vehicle, I’ve always thought the air conditioning to be a bit anemic. Turned on the new blower for the first time, and WHOOOSH! So that’s good, even if it did cost $200 for a baseball-sized fan.

Ah well. Back to being a zombie.

I need BEANS!!! coffee BEANNNSSS!!

::zoom::

Hello goodbye!

::mooz::

So Hi there everyone!

I made it to Kazakhstan and and back with no injuries or hospital visits - Whoohoo!

I taught my management class last week and it went well and I have my MRI tomorrow to hopefully find out why my knee is still paining me badly

I think I quit my job yesterday to my functional boss…but I am not sure (Holiday today in France so I have to meet with my direct boss tomorrow)

On the plus side I see my hubby in 4 weeks 2 days…

How’s this for mundane and pointless… Since losing weight, I’ve had to order several new bras in diminishing band sizes. I was all excited to come home today and try out my new bra that came in the mail. If fit ok, but I felt like it was stabbing me in the chest. :frowning: if you pay $55 for something like that, you should be able to wear it for more than 5 minutes. Fortunately, it can be returned.

MMMMS… How are you not sure if you quit or not

You are SheBoss’ daughter? Wait a minute, she’s 37yo and a virgin, you can’t be! Unless… are you the Antichrist?

By the time I left that job she was making us email her daily reports (we’d crack jokes about those “what I did on vacation” essays we all had to do for school at some point), refusing to read them and either calling us on the phone or coming to sit with us to get verbal ones.

My condolences…

Whew - I’s tahred! I’ve been doing stationary biking at the end of my work day, and my legs are like jello. But I need to get exercise, so it works.

Bernie has something funky going on with her right eye - I’m wondering if the cat scratched her or if she did it to herself. Poor puppy.

Dunno what we’re doing for supper - I may do sketties, since that’s easy. Tuna steaks for tomorrow, I think. Unless FCD, daughter, and nephew go on their boating trek, then not.

Meanwhile, I’m doing laundry. Because I have such an exciting life. Oh yeah… So exciting that I couldn’t bear a six-week vacation. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, I’m jealous.

Pie I told my indirect boss I was sick of this shit and they needed to get someone in who could work 22 hours a day after him telling me I wasn’t doing my job when he waded into something with both feet after I had put 6 months of work into something then he couldn’t contribute one thing that had not already been tried.

{{gotti}} Sounds like a rough time getting ready to move.

Mom eventually emailed me back and said “Oh, I just read your blog and see you posted about you weekend.”

This has not been the most productive day ever. I’m glad there’s only an hour to go.

I’m a sleepy zombie tired puppy

Cool stuff about furries, Moonie.

Congratulations spaz!

Owwie, hope the foot isn’t broken, Muppet.

This weekend I took my girlfriend to PrideAlive in Green Bay. We had a wonderful time listening to music, browsing the vendor stalls, and people watching. We spent the rest of the weekend at her place. She told me she wants me to move in with her. :D:) I’m so excited. I am already referring to it as home. When you stop to think of it, it seems like we are moving very fast. We’ve only been together a couple months, but it seem like we have always been together. Now all I have to do is figure out how to tell my mother that I have fallen in love with a woman.

{{gotti}} Moving it Teh Suck. I’ve been lucky in that I’ve always moved within the same city, but I can only imagine how many more magnitudes of suck are involved when you’re moving to a completely different state.

Congrats on moving to the next step, Wallflower. Fingers crossed for the parental discussion… may she be as happy that you’ve found someone wonderful (regardless of gender) as you are.

mmmmmmmmmmm, I think you must be working for an old boss of mine… or perhaps his identical twin (I’d say evil twin, except that would be casting my old boss in the good twin role and that’s just not possible)

Foot Update, Pt 2: It’s still sore, but it hasn’t gotten any worse over the course of the day and the swelling is pretty minor, so the verdict seems to be badly bruised vs. broken. Hurray!

::Looks around:: Umm, Muppet, around here, it’s Tuesday!

Wow, boss sounds like an ass, **mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm[/B

Sorry about the moving stress, gotti. I haven’t moved a lot, but yeah…leaving friends/family is always the worst. At least it’s much easier to stay in touch these days.

Seem to be coming down with a cold. Yuck.

Gotta get a few things done and some dinner et regardless.

Back later.

GT

Another day, another dime earned; well about 60 cents after taxes.

Glad you found someone that makes you happy, Wallflower.

Glad your foot is not as bad as it could have been, Mahna.

Moving is not fun, gotti. When I was a child, we made a few interstate moves, one overseas move and back, and then an intrastate move.

As an adult, I’ve only moved about within the county, so they were all local moves.

ems, sounds like your boss needs a whap upside the head with a clue by four. I’m probably not telling you anything you haven’t thought of.

I’m most definitely jealous of your trip, **Haze. ** I can’t imagine being on a vacation for six weeks. I’ve been off work for six or eight week stretches, but those were recovery from surgery and maternal leave. Hardly a “vacation”.

I look forward to seeing pics.

Well, the mundanity of my life calls. I should grill up some burgers, I guess.

It’s official - **FCD **got his job offer in the mail. Effective Aug 3 - yay! So the question is: will his current employer cut him loose or expect him to stay thru the end of the month. We shall see.

My dryer is dead, sorta. It’ll turn on the air only cycle, but if I try to run it for heat, it immediately turns off. We checked the thermal fuse, and it’s still good, so something else is up. **FCD **will call the repair guy tomorrow. Hope it’s not obscenely expensive - the #($^%(@&# *dryer isn’t even 4 years old!!! grrrrrr Fortunately, it’s not humid out, so I hung the jeans I’d just washed on a line strung between 2 trees. They should be dry tomorrow morning.

House is open - it’s nice and cool out. Good sleeping night, methinks. So there’s that.

Is it Firday yet??

Congrats to FCD! That’s really great news.

I hope the dryer repair is inexpensive.

Sigh…just not feeling motivated to cook at the moment.

Wallflower I take it your parents haven’t been told of your preferences in general? Are they ex-hippies? ex-hippies never seem to have a problem with that sort of thing. If they’re more conservative, break it to them in stages:
[ol]
[li]Gee, I can never seem to find a decent guy[/li][li]I’m taking a break from dating for a while[/li][li]I’ve made a new friend - it’s nice to hang with someone without romantic pressure[/li][li]She and I have been spending a lot of time together[/li][li]We’ve grown very close[/li][li]We’ve explored our options[/li][li]We’re lovers[/li][/ol]
Do this over several weeks, they might be okay with it all.

Home again, dogs walked.

Taters, I wasn’t motivated either, so I had cold pizza.

Glad you had a good weekend, Walls!

Yay FCD jobs! Boo dead dryers.

gotti sorry about the moving issues.

mmmmmm, maybe you can pass your mishap curse on to moronBoss? That would (possibly literally) kill two birds with one stone.

Pie, cite?

Hope the foot stays not so bad, Muppet!

Enjoy your vacation, Haze. I go to Vegas in 3 weeks, 10 hours and 30 mintues(not that I’m counting or anything. :D)

Which job is this? How far from home? Yay! in any case.

Yay for a happy relationship, Flower!

Add me to the ever-growing list of envious people, Haze. Also, YES, you still owe us pictures. And we’ll expect another story and pictures from the Thailand trip. Or else!!! :stuck_out_tongue:

Am eating potato with Greek yogurt and herbs. Quite yummy. Also had a glass of nice cold lemonade (actual, made from a fresh, non-plastic lemon, lemonade).

And will now proceed to upload some pictures to be printed for Mom.

By the way…I won’t be around next Monday and won’t be back till sometime the next Sunday, so y’al’ll have to fight over who starts the next 2 MMPs. :D:p

Off to upload pictures. Woo hoo.

GT

Well hell… so it is. Apparently, this week is so damned busy that my brain is inserting an extra workday to fit it all in.

Bad brain. Bad! BAD! :smack:

Also:
Hurray for FCD!!! throws confetti And thanks for mentioning laundry, Mooooooom. I just realised I should throw mine in the dryer, so that it can be dry and folded by bedtime (not to flaunt my working dryer… if it was feasible to send mine over to you once I was done with it, I’d do it)

Just going to go through all posts in reverse order so I may address you twice. Will try to avoid that.

Mahna - Glad your foot isn’t broken or anything so horrid. Wait… Haven’t we had several Mumpers in the last couple months who did something unpleasant to their feet or toes? I seem to remember similar posts in the not-too-distant past.

As far as the costumes go… Actually, there’s not as much planning as you’d think. Most people who wear them only have one or two costumes, representing their furry character(s), and frequently they have those costumes made by professional fursuit makers. So, when convention time rolls around - be it AnthroCon or one of dozens of other furry cons - they just have to grab their costume and go. Obviously there are some people who do what you described, but they’re the minority.

Then it is fortunate for me that I’m a huge softy and absolutely love being hugged and squeezed!

Wallflower - All the best to you and your SO, and congratulations on finding happiness, whatever form it may come in. Oh, and best of luck with your parents, too!
**
Anyrose** - Welcome to my life!

Pie - I did not see the word “band” there and was thoroughly confused for a bit as I tried to figure out how (and why) you would want to lose weight from there.

ems - I await, with great anticipation, stories and photos from your trip! Also, how do you THINK you quit your job? It’s kind of a yes or no thing, really… :dubious:

Gotti - Sorry it’s been rough on you, but on the bright side, at least you’re going to have a chance to meet new people and make new friends after the move, right? And as long as you stay in touch with those you’re leaving behind, via phone or email or instant messaging or whatever, I’m sure you’ll find yourself in good company at all times - no matter where you are!

As far as packing goes… Just think of it as a really thorough cleaning. When you move into the new place there’ll be no dust or dirt and everything will be exactly where you want it (once it’s unpacked, anyway). That only ever happens once, so savor the moment!

And finally, regarding your drunken Independence Day Calvinball offshoot - That. Game. Sounds. AWESOME!!! I want to play some time; I wonder if i could organize a game down at UMBC… pondering and scheming

Taxi - I think it’s just a parental thing. Ctrl-C and Crtl-V are your friends, though.

As for your weekend… Sounds like a good time! Food, friends, and fun are really all you need to make a day worth remembering, and beautiful weather just compounds everything. I haven’t played Life in forever, either - I know I always buy the big old Victorian house, though, cuz I’ve always wanted to live in a big old place like that. Plague sounds like a blast, too, and you’re right - that kind of spontaneous socialization really does bring a surprising sense of community. At least, that’s how I felt playing free-for-all Apples to Apples with strangers at the con, which I suspect was not all that dissimilar to your get-together save for the fact that we didn’t have delicious desserts or the good sense to go to bed at a reasonable hour.

Rebo - A lot of work beats unemployment!

VunderBob - Seeing as how you won’t be needing those coupons any longer, I shall selflessly volunteer to take them off your hands…

Also, I shall be making (non-Sugar Free, as Fake Sugar makes me ill) Neener Pudding soon, with any luck. It sounds delicious!

I will tear out your spinal column and bludgeon you with it.

Haze - I sort of figured most people on the 'Dope, being rational, mature professionals a generation ahead of me who are not as prone to such silliness, would fall somewhere between “Never heard of 'em” and “I’ve got a vague idea” when it comes to the fandom, so I figured it was my civic duty to edumacate the lot of you.

Also, I am very, VERY jealous of your vacation. Can you do me a huge favor while you’re there? Get me a recipe for AUTHENTIC Thai Peanut Sauce - I love the stuff, even the Americanized prepackaged jarred variety, but I’d love to be able to make it myself using only the ingredients it was designed to include! makes sad, pleading puppydog eyes

Actually, I’d take ANY recipe you could bring back, or post, or whatever. I love Thai food in general!

Lucky 13 - Glad you enjoyed the OP; I was worried I’d bore everybody, what with it being so long!

Interestingly, the only members of our little entourage who bought any adult material were the girls, Danielle and Kayla. I found that extremely amusing, except when I walked in on Kayla reading a furry yaoi manga called “Cocktails”. The three guys were too broke (me), too shy/embarrassed (Lenny) and too not-interested (Jon-Erich) to buy anything dirty. :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh… And thanks for the compliment, too! That pic was drawn by my friend Bethy, and I’m hoping to have it made into a badge in time for either AC 2010, or FA: United. It is adorable, isn’t it? :3

Doggio - You just got LEARNED! cue Reading Rainbow graphics

Taters - Don’t worry if you haven’t finished yet - it’s 12 pages long and there’s something like 600 photos and 45 minutes of video. I deliberately broke up the post with spoiler boxes and split the media across 8 links so people could read a bit every day instead of trying to take in the whole thing at once.

Also… What’s the new job? I may or may not understand it, but I’d still like to know.

3:55am is not early. 3:55am is betime.

FCM - You and your posts about food… I swear, every time I read something by you, it makes me hungry. You’re gonna make me secondhand fat.

Don’t worry if you need to spread the OP out - that’s what I’d intended for people to do. I may be unusual, but I’m not cruel! XD

Rebo - Glad you found my musings enlightening! That damned Law and Order episode is such a terrible misrepresentation of the community, it’s not even funny - yes, there are people like that, but they’re a tiny fraction of the whole fandom, and the rest of us largely ignore them anyway.

And I did find video of the parade - it’s in the links at the bottom of the third post.

LurkMeister - I was wondering if I’d draw any other furs out of the SDMB’s considerable woodwork with this post; I know there are a few on here but they’re incognito most of the time. Being an East Coast resident (Maryland, ~45 minutes Northeast of Baltimore), AnthroCon is one of the only Furry cons I can get to on my virtually nonexistent broke-college-student budget; everything else is out West and too far away. Not that that’s going to stop me from trying; AC was such a blast that I have found myself considerably more motivated to try to make it to Midwest FurFest, FCN, Califur, and others.

Do you by any chance have an AIM account? Or Yahoo Instant Messenger? I’m always looking to meet new, interesting people, so if you’re feeling brave, you can reach me at either of the above by sending a message to alastairmoonsong.
I’d love to hear your con stories at the very least, and ideally, add another friend to my contacts list; who knows, maybe you could come to next year’s AC with the group I’m going to organize!

Tarragon - Don’t worry, everybody loves stuffed animals… And anyway, there’s no shame in being a casual/closet Furry!

Swampy - Well, to be fair, we ARE people who dress up like animals. We just do it for reasons that go much deeper than most folks realize. Glad you enjoyed the OP, though!

Spaz - Dang… Y’all should call me Mario, cuz I just got 1-up’d @___@ Seriously, though, congratulations! I can’t even fathom the amount of work involved in something like that, so excuse me whilst I stand here in awe for a bit.

Arrighty, I think that’s everybody.

As for me… Today was spent working on homework. My last homework for the Summer, to be specific, since my Thermodynamics class final is tomorrow. I need a 75 or 80 percent on the final to get an A for the course, and a 50+ for a B overall, so I’m not too worried. Other than that, not a lot going on - as usual, wasting time online, and generally trying to keep myself occupied. I did make a new friend though - a Furry lurker from these boards who read this post and sent me an IM out of the blue yesterday. I will very likely end up joining his roleplaying group, so yay, an additional source of entertainment.

The next few days are going to be rather busy at Chez Moonie - Tomorrow is my Thermo final, Thursday I’ll be doing manual labor for grammom, and then I have Friday and Saturday to clean the entire house AND pack for a family vacation to the mountains of Western Maryland. Why clean the whole house beforehand? Because the day after we get back, I’ve got company (Cute girl! Yay!) coming to visit from out of state, and she’ll be staying the weekend. So much to look forward to - and so much to do in the meantime.

And finally: Today’s Random AnthroCon Anecdote: It’s Not Magic!

I was walking up and down the aisles of the Dealer’s Room on Sunday, the last day of the convention, when out of the corner of my eye I spotted something familiar looking. My thought process went something like this:

“Hmmm… Small glossy rectangular things. Look like paper, maybe cardboard… I see pictures at the top… Text and numbers underneath… Symbols… Can’t really make out detail but these look familiar…”

At this point I had not actually turned my head to see what these mysterious objects were, but that did not stop my brain from leaping to the following immediate conclusion: “Holy crap! They’re character badges* made to look like cards from the Magic: The Gathering trading card game!”

Being a former Magic player, I was immediately interested, and turned sharply, pointing at the table and addressing the dealer, even though I had still not actually taken a good look at the cardboard squares on the table. “Excuse me, are those badges made to look like Magic: The Gathering cards?”

The ensuing conversation went as follows:
Me: If so, I want one!
Him: Nope! Sorry! This is Furoticon, the adult Furry trading card game!
Me (now with a shattered heart and crushed dreams): Wait, what?
Him: Well, the way the game works is… starts explaining; I am no longer paying attention
Me: You should have just said “Yes!”. I would totally have bought something.
Him: I mean… Yes! YES! Yes they are! Buy something!
Me: Sorry man, too late, I just thought a Magic badge would be cool.

I’m not mad at the guy, and we both had a laugh at the incident, and I appreciate him playing along at the end, but still… Only at AnthroCon could I confuse a Furry porn card game for an homage to one of my favorite games ever. That’ll teach me to look before I leap - or speak, as the case may be!**

*It’s a little clip-on thing you wear with a picture of your character on it so people know who/what you are.
**No it won’t. I’m a slow learner.
