I’m heartbroken that apparently MorningStar has discontinued it’s meatless hot dogs. Does anyone know any that are comparable? I’ve tried the Smart Dogs, but they aren’t nearly as good.

I’ve never had any luck with veggie dogs, so I’m interested to hear the recommendations, too.
No.
I tried smart dogs once. When I put it in the microwave, instead of actually cooking or something it melted like plastic. It pretty much tasted the same, too.
This is probably not quite what you’re looking for, but my all-time favorite thing to put on a hot dog bun is a Tofurky Italian sausage. Trader Joe’s has 'em.
Both Tofu Pups and Yves brands make pretty tasty veggie dogs, but they are ONLY worth having if you can actually grill them on a BBQ…
For some reason (in my opinion anyway) both veggie burgers and veggie dogs are light years better if cooked over an open flame; I haven’t eaten any meat in over 16 years, but I think I would rather eat a piece of rare prime rib than have a veggie dog/burger that was cooked in the microwave.
I am not sure what the reason is, but there are certain foods that cry out for specific methods of cooking, and for me the BBQ is the way to go for the veg. burgers.
I agree–I always cooked the Morninstar Ones on the grill. I’ll see if I can track down those others–I haven’t seen them in my stores here in NJ. Hopefully they’re available out here.
I came here to recomend these. I first found them at TJ but now get them at Knob Hill.
Yves is awesome. I think Shop Rite carries them in the produce section.
hey that Tofurky sounds really good
and I like the morningstar blackbean burgers
never tried the dogs, If I do, I will grill.
The BBq hickory riblets from morningstar are also very good, I mean finger licking good too.
You won’t be able to try the dogs, as they’ve been discontinued due to (according to their website) ‘supplier problems’.
It’s quite funny to read the message boards over there–some folks are quite angry about the problem, and accuse Morningstar of lying about the supplier problem for some reason or other.
I like Yves as well, but my input may be of dubious value; I’ve been a vegetarian all my life so I have no way of describing how they may or may not stack up against the real deal.
They don’t taste like plastic, at least, though I still would not recommend microwaving them.
chela, I was just at the store and happened to see the BBQ riblets on sale, and even though I dont care for Morningstar “chick’n” products (though I really like Morningstar veggie burgers) I decided to give the riblets a go, on your reccomendation…
Thanks in advance—Matthew
I loved their corndogs and am so disappointed that they stopped making them.
I don’t understand the “supplier problem” either. What could it mean?
