Any love for I Love You to Death?

This is such a great movie that no one I know has ever seen. It’s rarely talked about, and yet it’s brilliant. Very quotable. Great cast, with Kevin Klein, Tracey Ullman, River Phoenix, William Hurt, Keanu Reeves, Victoria Jackson, and Heather Graham.

“If we keep shooting Joey, don’t you think he might get suspicious?”

YES!!

One of our very favorite movies. Funny as hell, extremely strong cast, making Joan Plowright’s scene-stealing all the more remarkable.

Quotes?? The whole damn movie.
“You know… the GUY…”

“I’m a man, I got hormones in my body.”

“Ladies…Monopoly…”

Isn’t there already a thread about Mel Gibson?

I love that movie too.

“I pledge allegiance to the flag…”

I thought this thread was going to be about the Village People song -

I love You to Death

Kline in the confessional is priceless and really makes the movie work. Everyone else is fine, but he really makes a ridiculous characterization into an inspiring comic turn.

“Deliver us from freedom.”

Great little movie that much too obscure that it deserves to be.

Bill Hurt should definitely play more stoners.

Can you imagine?

I use “You know…the guy” all the time, and everytime I say it, I appreciate William Hurt a little bit more - I can never get the same inflection, the same “buzz” that he does it with.

“It’s still… MURDER!”

My favorite (paraphrased, as I can’t find it online) quote:

Joey: A guy in an Abraham Lincoln mask just tried to bash my head in with a baseball bat!

Cop: OK, slow down, just tell me what happened.

Joey: Well, basically, a guy wearing an Abraham Lincoln mask tried to bean me with a baseball bat.

Katja: Did you get a good look at his face?

Joey: Yeah, he looked like-a Abe Lincoln a-comin’ up to bat.

Yes. Same here.

Me too, but since so few people I know have seen this movie they have no idea what I’m talking about. Can you imagine?

Okay, I’ll bite. Is “Can you imagine?” a line from the movie? I can’t place it.

All right, tell him what you told me.

I want to make a deal.

Not that! The other thing.

Oh. There’s not enough heat in my cell.

No. Harlon and Marlon.

Oh yeah…

Yeah, Nadja said it all the time. Usually it was when she read (and believed) some wild story from a tabloid.

How can I possibly not know this? I’ve seen the movie a dozen times, AND she’s my favorite character!

I’m not even 60 yet (another 4 months to go) and my memory is disintegrating. As Marlon would say: “… fuck …”

Silver lining: now I’ll have to watch it again and pay CLOSE attention to Nadja’s utterances.

An unappreciated little gem - William Hurt and Kevin Kline really make the movie. The best part? It was loosely based on a true story.
