After App State kicked the field goal (on first down? Talk about cautious!), I said to my wife, “No way Chad Henne has it in him to drive his team 50-ish yards to kick the field goal. Chad Henne is a motherfuckin’ joke.” And then – he did! Holy shit!
I’m nonsensical. I still can’t believe it.
And screw this, “Oh, Michigan just overlooked them. And App State was the cream o’ the crop of Division 1-AA schools (or MLS or BBS or whatever they’re called now).” Michigan has a shitty secondary, and if Armanti Edwards can take advantage, I imagine just about every team in the Big Ten can take advantage of it. This is a systemic problem for the team up North, not a fluke.
OK, it’s kind of a fluke, but that team’s got some problems. I imagine I’ll be basking in the schaudenfraude all year long. (Especially as they show clip after clip from this game during the UM-OSU game!! Hee!)
Back when I was near NC, App State was a good respectable place to go if you were a bit of a hippie and loved the ski. Which also described UNC-Asheville. No idea if that’s still the case.
Still, I have a soft spot in my heart for Lloyd Carr. I can’t imagine him getting fired. I may be in quite a distinct minority.
Michigan fans will do as they always do–retreat to lick their wounds and buck themselves up with reminders of the school’s reputation for non-athletic stuff. There are six other days in the week; thank god for that when you’re a Michigan fan.
Oh, and that “fuck lion” thing doesn’t date from August 22nd. That’s been his crazy facebook page for awhile. It’s a featured thing on Michigan communities.
I am so glad that I no longer work at that particular Harris-Teeter.
And I will definately wear my App hat to work and the gym. I’ve always heard it called “App.” And yes, I make sure to correct anyone who mistakenly says “Appa-LAY-shun.”
The more and more coverage and commentary I see on this game, the more my feeling that the A vs. AA games are complete bullshit is justified.
From an exact quote I heard on ESPN’s First and Ten program today, “Of course this is one of the biggest upsets ever. Because it’s never happened before. And it shouldn’t have happened.”
Shouldn’t? Whatever happened to football being an “any given Sunday” game? People are calling for the resignation of Michigan’s coach. Other’s are calling the game a complete fluke.
After all, it shouldn’t have happened, right? Those 110,000 people who packed the stadium were paying for and expecting to see a traditional 63 - 7 blowout of a AA team by a ranked BCS team. But how is that even fun? How, as a Michigan fan, can you get at all excited about a game that you know with 99.99999999% certainty will be a blowout? No wonder they were in tears after that block.
The fact that this event shouldn’t have happened because it was supposed to be a good old fashioned walk-over makes it all the more hilarious that the exact opposite happened. The game itself showed that once every 100 years a nationally ranked team can lay a huge egg, and all the commentary has shown just how much of a joke these college football matchups are (or at least supposed to be) in the first place.
I agree, but it’s a tough problem to solve without leaving the smaller NCAA schools in the dust. The BCS is already exclusive as it is.
What sucks is that the powerhouse programs are all fine with scheduling really weak opponents, but they’re all terrified of those high-powered mid-major programs. Who (besides OU fans) didn’t love seeing Boise St. surprise the Sooners in the Fiesta bowl last year? Both the Broncos and their WAC opponents Hawaii are ranked in the top 25 right now, and the only game either one has against a ranked opponent is against each other.
Have I mentioned that Corey Lynch, the App player who blocked the kick is from right down here in Lee County FLA? And yet, there’s nothing in the local papers.
USA Today/Coach’s Poll is out, and Michigan dropped like a rock into the depths of “others receiving votes”. Almost as stunning as the game itself.
I loved the App State radio announcers hysteria at the final FG block.
Over the summer, Chad Henne and Cal QB Nate Longshore met up at a camp, and Nate asked Henne who Michigan was playing in their opener. On hearing the answer, Nate replied “Nice. Going to wear your game jerseys?”
I loved the game. For those of us in 1-AA all our football-fan lives, it’s always been the Big Boys not simply looking down the divisions, but completely ignoring anyone who isn’t a “Powerhouse” worthy enough to play them. But 1-AA has some very good teams, and as this shows, all it takes is a great day for a great team, versus a bad day for a team that’s not as great as it thinks it is.
I loved it when Appalachian kicked Michigan’s ass. I loved it when Boise beat OU last year. I love it every time a big team loses to a small team because the big team thinks they can just phone it in. Call us cupcakes if you like, just be careful you don’t choke on one.
I’m proud as a new mama of App State, and I’m not even a fan usually, seeing as how they beat my Montana Grizzlies for the 1-AA chapionship last year. Well done, Mountaineers!
Hawaii, if it goes unbeaten, could be considered this years Boise State. Unfortunately, our schedule is terrible and could hurt our BCS chances. Think of this story when people criticize UH’s schedule during bowl selection time.
Having enough confidence in your QB to open at Michigan or USC: balls of steel.
