Let’s see if this thread burns out as fast as mine did last year.
Anyways, I’ll be pulling for Kanye, Green Day, Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse and for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals, Redemption Song by Johnny Cash & Joe Strummer. I really, really hope this wins.
However, this is the Grammys so I’m expeting absolutely nothing from them in terms of quality.
Holy cow, that p.o.s. Hoobestank doggerel “The Reason” got a Best Song nomination? I may recognize very few of the songs/artists listed, but I can recognize that that song is a turd of the highest order. Blech.
Evanescence is pop masquerading as dark, angsty goth music in the same way that Avril is pop masquerading as punk (?). I went to an Evanescence show, and it was about fifty-fifty composed of hipsters who were there because the band had a catchy single, and kids who saw the video and wanted to kiss/be Amy Lee, the way-hottie-licious lead singer. I went with a friend who had an extra ticket and it was a fun time until the loonie ran onstage and hugged Amy Lee. Then the bouncer dragged his ass offstage and it was a fun time again.
Yes, Evanescence is pop. They are Dark, Gothy, Metal-Rock. But they are still basically pop.
Evanescence isn’t really pop in the sense that the Beatles or Fountains of Wayne are pop, but as metal acts go, they’re near the top in terms of accessibility and pop appeal. I’m just surprised that they’re eligible this year–their album came out in 2003, so what are they doing in the 2004 Grammys?
I’ve been off the Grid for years. Last year I watched for a half hour before I finally recognized someone, anyone: Billy Joel. I grew up listening to his music. “Come out, Virginia…” I was such a rebel listening to his album because it was banned at my school. (Sister Mary Carmen would have had a coronary over Eminem.) Anywho, I think Joel was being given a lifetime achievement award or something, which shows you how decrepit I am.
The grammys their last tatter of credibility when they gave one to Hilary Clinton (best spoken record). Try as I might I can’t find a list of who she beat.
