Are you (almost) ready for some (SDMB fantasy) football?!?

league is full, drats.

Come here. The sandbox has room. And if Milo opens this league up for a couple more we can tangle in both leagues.

Come now, Mr. Mundi. Everyone knows you waited until the league was full, because you knew you couldn’t get that lucky against my superior FF skills two years in a row.

Your courageous taunts now are akin to one of those NBA players who always waits to try to take a swing at an opponent only after two or three teammates are “holding him back.”

I’d be willing to go up to 16, but no higher. And I’d love to have you and Saint Zero in. Email me, and maybe we can work something out.

I’d like to see those 2 guys added. Thats my vote if it matters.

Regarding the live draft, if its got to be Wednesday can we move the time forward a couple hours? Thats too late here in the normal (Central) time zones. I can do it at 6:30 CDT.

The draft came, the draft went (on Aug 15). It looked like this:

okay – there you have it. A few observations on my own team:[ul]
[li]I favor the steady production of linebacers over the spikes of interceptions & sacks–I am very happy with my defense[/li][li]I had a power blink in round 5 and the computer pulled Brunell for me. He was the best QB available, but I was already risking injury with my #1 and I would have gone for Boston, Moulds, or Keyshawn instead. Still, at least the yahoo didn’t pull a DL for me in round 5.[/li][li]I overvalued Terrence Mathis and possibly Priest holmes, but I wanted the injury insurance.[/li][li]Janikowski in 8 and Bledsoe in 10 were steals, but it’s hard to get too excited about a kicker and a situational QB. (Week 1 against the Bungles? You bet he’s starting.)[/li][li]Hearst was a gamble, but in round 12 I was happy to place the bet.[/li][li]McKnight might be a true sleeper.[/li][li]I have already dropped Mathis and Moore to add Lawyer Milloy and travis Henry. The first because the Cards have a bye week 1 and I didn’t want to risk McKinnon to waivers. The second because mid-range wideouts are plentiful but starting backs are not. Henry is the buzz if the week. I’ll drop him like a rock if Sammy Morris reasserts himself.[/ul][/li]
A few notes about the rest:[ul]
[li]The Yahoo board was royally screwed when it came to rating defenders. Folks who couldn’t log in, or who relied upon teh Yahoo rankings, got shafted. The waiver wire has been very heavy with people replacing the likes of John Howell.[/li][li]Edge and Moss at picks 8 & 9 were dead steals. I was gnashing my teeth that they didn’t slide one more.[/li][li]Mike Anderson at 20 was a gutsy play. Payoff and risk are both super-size.[/li][li]London Fletcher, Mike Hollis, Kevin Williams, & Ryan Longwell all went way too soon. None of them belonged in the first 3 rounds.[/ul][/li]
Well–those are the teams. Let the smack begin!

I’d like to publicly thank Yahoo for my picks, especially for passing on Randy Moss, Daunte Culpepper, Kurt Warner, Edgerrin James, Peyton Manning, Eddie George, Fred Taylor, et al, and taking Jeff Garcia with the second overall pick. Thank you, thank you, I’m going to shoot myself now.

Although, really, this just adds to the rage of a lotta suns I’m feeling right now, so it’s very auspicious- I sense a playoff berth.

I had made a list of the top eight players, and the only one left was Moss. I considered, for a half-second, picking someone else, and then I realised “It’s Randy Fucking Moss! Pick Him!”

You must be channelling my team, because I’m the only sure thing for a playoff spot.

I justed wanted to throw in my 2 cents here about the draft. First, it was a blast! I had a great time picking, chatting, getting E.James with the EIGHTH pick, and drinking with everyone. It will be a shame when I have to ruin the nice feelings by crushing all of you, but C’est La Vie.

Second, I was amazed how quickly the QBs disappeared. I waited until the 6th round, and you can tell by my lack of a star QB. (As an aside, the funniest thing I heard on the radio last year was one of those NFL updates where a reporter from Buffalo says: “The Bill won the coin flip … Rob Johnson was injured on the play.” Cracked me up.) But I’ll make that up with my Colts heavy offense.

Third, 16 teams dillutes the talent quite quickly. I sense there will be quite a few waiver moves and trades once the season starts.

Finally, my projections:

1st ME!!! (Not In The Face) I picked a strong offensive starting team (except in weeks 1 and 5 where bye weeks may hurt me), and still ended up with my top 2 defensive players.

2nd Fighting Ferrets. Having a qb,wr tandem is either pure genius (if they both stay healthy) or pure idiocy. Big risk for Milo, but it could pay huge dividends. He also has nice depth though.

3rd Meek Marauders. Although your team is first in line for the Geritol, if they perform like they can, you can challenge.

It should be a fun season. And, just cause I like to say it: Chris Fuamatu-Ma’Afala…

[sub]Looking at my team again[/sub]
Oh lord oh god Yahoo wasted my second pick on a KICKER?

This is my punishment for not being able to make the draft, right? Getting Garcia with my first and Hollis with my second?

I’ll come back from this, oh, yes, I will. I’ll be like the gunk on the bottom of your shoe that you don’t remember stepping in, but you keep scraping the sole of your shoe on the front step, but the gunk never comes off? So you end up tracking into the office, and everyone is sniffing the air and wondering what that godawful stench is, but you don’t want to admit that it’s the thing you stepped in out in the parking lot, so you end up trudging around all day with that gunk on your shoe that won’t come off, and you’re full of rage?

I’m that kind of rage. I’m going to sneak into the playoffs with a horrible record, but steal a wildcard berth.

First, [sub]and then I promise I’ll let it go forever [/sub], WHAT THE FUDGE was up with the blinking Yahoo! Server letting me be logged onto Yahoo!, see the draft results, everything EXCEPT actually enter the draft. And worst of all was that I had actually done my homework and spent hours researching and ranking all available players, sorting the wheat from the chaff. Its impossible to say what would have, could have been, but suffice to say that my draft would have been entirely different if this had not happened. Luckily I had been fooling around a bit with the pre-draft rating thing a couple of days before, so I didn’t get stuck with Jeff Garcia as my number 1 pick, but I had only thrown a few players in there to see how the thing worked, my ratings in the end were way different. The worst part was not the beginning, but the crucial middle rounds where I watched helplessly as that soulless machine picked guys I would never have taken in a million years. I think that as of yesterday I have dumped half of my original team and replaced from waivers and free-agency.

Okay, I feel better now…

The silver lining is that when I go out and kick collective butt, it will be based purely on my skill and derring-do, ability to find the rare needle in the hay stack, and not just because I had the first overall pick.

Let the smack fu continue… Unskilled Hacks RULE!!

LNO
Check your email. I might be able ot help you with your Garcia issue.

Hamlet
Your first three picks were righteous studs, aided by the inexplicable tumble of Edge, but I scoff at Emmitt Smith and thomas Jones as second and third RB’s. Smith will see 8 in the box all year, and Jones will get benched for Pittman by mid season.

Boston is a stud, but he has Ol’ Snakey throwing to him, which means inconsistency. His numbers will also suffer if the cards really do manage to emphasize the power running game behind their massive O-line.

I match up better than you at every position except TE (where Gonzalez has no peer) and primary RB, and if Taylor stays healthy (and/or pigs fly) the RB slot’s a wash, too. And when Rob Johnson goes down with his third minor boo-boo of the year, you’ll be riding the Couch-potato express to mediocrity.

Montfort
You should have gone with your first instinct. Really. I’m not just saying that.

ShibbOleth
A likely story. We know you were slavering for Todd Pederson and Cade McKnown.

Suck it up. No sympathy for anyone who has the Marshall Plan to fall back on.

A little bit of sympathy for Dorsey Levens and you rWR corp (though if Crowell gets healthy he’ll be a producer)

Why did Yahoo draft a kicker for me?
So I could kick myself for missing the draft.

See, it’s sort of Zen-like. And I’ve gotta find the humor in the situation if I want to stay sane.

And Mundi? I’ll have a counteroffer for you momentarily.

You call Kevin Faulk a counter offer?

It’s early in the day. You need to get me after I’ve been drinking. A lot.

Faullk can’t even beat out the 2nd best runner that the Bills released this season for a starting chance. He’s the third down back on a bad offense.

Oh, man–thanks for the laugh, though. Mondays are always better with a chuckle.

So . . .ShibbOleth.

Want to talk about Aaron Brooks?

Okay, okay. We keep the trade as it currently stands, but you send me your address and I send you a case of your preferred beer.

Sheesh, some people drive a hard bargain…

Better be a good offer, he’s lookin’ pretty sweet these days. I’ll need a starting QB.

[sub]Here’s what my draft would have been:

QB: Peyton Manning
RB: Ahman Green
RB: Warrick Dunn
K: Martin Grammatica
WR: Muhsin Muhammed

This takes into account who would have been available at what picks.
I got bored after that… [/sub]

And now that I have looked through what some people took, WTF is with people/yahoo taking defenders and kickers so high?

You’re absolutely right about enjoying a good laugh on a Monday. Let’s check the matchups:

QB

Johnson and Couch
v.
Brunell and Bledsoe

You have two known commodities. They are known for being mediocre at best in fantasy football. Add to that the fact that both have lost their #1 receiver and have a porous O-line, they are in big trouble. Johnson has to potential to really do well, and even if he is average, he’ll still beat your QBs. Couch is finally in a system that fits him, he has a great (if somewhat injured) receiver corps. He’ll be my sleeper stud this year.
Edge, Smith, Jones and Alexander
v.
Taylor, Dunn, Holmes, and Hearst

Edge, although I got him more by luck than skill, could make up for 3 bad rbs, but I got 3 starters, and a backup (alexander) who has had a good camp and plays in a dream offense for a running back. Emmitt is chasing a record, they have long ball threats, and he’s just plain good. Hell, last year they put 9 in the box and he still produced. Jones had a bad rookie season, but he’s got potential. He’ll do me fine. As for your team, Taylor - injury risk, he’s excellent when he plays, but you are never sure when that will be. Dunn - He’s your number 2??? Hahahahahaha. Dunn v. Emmitt Smith…hahahaha. The preseason hype is Dunn will be the next Faulk, with them running him, throwing to him, and making him their #1 threat. Well, don’t buy the hype. With alstot back, he’ll miss the TD opportunities, and he’s a scatback. Holmes - I liked the pick. He has a ton of upside and with the Chief’s offense, he may turn out to do really well. However, big questions with RBBC with Tony Richardson taking the red zone carries. Think Napoleon Kaufman. Hearst is a trendy pick, but he’s been out of football for two years and I just don’t see him having an impact.

Harrison, Boston, Westbrook, Darnay Scott (recent addition)
v.
Owens, Freeman, Mathis, McKnight, R.Moore.

Owens has no rb threat, no jerry rice, and a bad attitude. There is no way he comes close to last years stats. Freeman is a good #3 receiver, but he has gone downhill since signing his huge contract. I don’t see him getting better now. Mathis was just plain a mistake. McKnight is a deep threat, but one 71 yard preseason TD is about all he’ll really get. Tony Martin couldn’t do it with the Dolphins, neither will McKnight. Rob Moore I like, he could be the comback kid, as a #2 behind Boston. Harrison is the 2nd best WR out there, Boston is on the verge of greatness, Westbrook and Scott are merely high possible return. If either can come back from their injuries, they’ll really put up the stats. I gambled, and we will see.

Gonzo
v.
Anybody else.

Gonzo, 'Nuff said.

Kickers, and Defense, I dont’ really need to break these down, except to mention I have the best LB in the business.

Of course, all this will be shown in a few months, and I’ll be talking smack with you till I bury you this season. Care for a little side action??? Say a football jersey from our respective teams?? let me know.

Good Luck!!! It’ll be fun.
