Attn DC Dopers - The Moving Thread You've Been Waiting For

Or, "The Moving Thread for which you have been Waiting"
(Being that I’m a writer, I can’t help correcting myself!)

Guess I had to break my (doper) cherry one of these days and actual start a thread all by myself…

As has been referenced before, PLDennison and yours truly are moving to Alexandria, Virginia, on June 10th. The generous offers to come help (or at least hang-out, laugh at us while we struggle to unload the truck and drink beverages–alcoholic and other) have been pouring…um, streaming…okay, trickling(?)…in.

Anyway, for those who were kind enough to inquire, we are driving down on June 10th, leaving Cleveland between 4:00 and 5:00 am (yes, AM as in morning). Time differential depends largely on how cooperative the three cats are about getting in their carriers. Our ETA, therefore, is being estimated by PLD as between 11:00 am and noon. We’ll probably want to take a short break before commencing the unpacking-ness. But then, I suspect, all are welcome…

If you are truly interested in helping out (which will be greatly appreciated and highly rewarded in good karma, mediocre food  and beer/beverage ways), please e-mail me (Peta) or PLDennison for exact directions, cellphone number, etc.

NOTE: Psycho-lunatics looking to serial murder innocent Dopers or nervous, new-DCers must bring chips and dip and carry at least 2 boxes of books.

If I’ve forgotten anything, I’ll likely be severely reprimanded [ woohoo! :D] by PLDennison in the privacy of our soon to be vacated home…and possibly corrected here, too! :o

Sure, I’ll help out…can’t be any worse than helping my friends move in to their third floor condo. (A true moving from hell story…I’ll have to share it sometime.)

I’ll be there!

BTW, I know many of you Marylanders get lost the minute you cross the Potomac. I can guide you right to the Dennisons’ new doorstep; they’re moving right into my old stomping grounds.

I’ve got visions of a carbohydrate-laden breakfast at the Ranch House on US 1, a couple miles south of the Beltway, before we commence moving these guys.

I’ll be in Tennessee until Monday night or Tuesday, so I’ll be out of the planning for a few days. Seeya!

Thanks Falcon & RTFirefly. I am so impressed by y’all’s (practicing my southern accent) generosity. And, since it looks like it’ll just be Phil and I loading everything here by ourselves, any help (or even emotional support :)) will be ethusiastically appreciated. Falcon, I’ll give you my clipboard with all the furniture designations and you can tell the men where to put stuff…how’s that for an assignment?!

Falcon, I’ll e-mail you later with details…should be easier since we’re on the ground floor and while there may be a few steps down inside the building, the patios seem pretty level to the ground so we’ll probably unload quite a bit from there.

I am also to understand there’s an IHOP in the neighborhood.

Peta -

You ROCK! Ground floor…I get to order people around… I LIKE this! And then over dinner I can share the moving from hell story…trust me, after hearing that, ANY move seems simple.

Well, I can’t be rude and not say why I’m not gonna help you guys.

I’ll be out of town from the 8th to the 11th - Chicago, to be exact. Socialist summer conference! Plotting to take over the world and make life miserable for the jerks who picked on us in high school.

Best of luck on the move, however; hope the weather isn’t as nastily hot and humid as it was the weekend we moved Mrs. O out of Pennsylvania!

As I said in the other thread, email me and DCnewsman at paganbearcub@hotmail.com and we will try our best to come help you guys out. I know it sucks to move so the more the merrier. I promise we won’t become psycho killers…at least not right away.

HUGS!
Sqrl

Thanks for sharing (though I wouldn’t find it rude if you didn’t) and for the good wishes!

Enjoy yourself in Chicago–I hear its a toddlin’ town.

I’m back from my travels, had a great time at the wedding, had a very pleasant lunch with evilbeth, and I’m looking forward to helping with the moving on Saturday.

Nothing against IHOP, but I’m going to keep on supporting my favorite local breakfast place (they’re pretty good for dinner, too). Anyone else interested? I’ll be happy to supply directions.

Now, how shall we get together on Saturday? I can call the Dennisons on their cell phone after I get up that morning, to get an approximate ETA, and will be happy to share that info with whoever wants it, at whatever time they’d prefer to be called.

I was about to send out an email on that subject. I’m up for breakfast. Would ensure I actually EAT something, I suppose. I can also bring my cell phone with me so we get called there when Phil & wife are ready for us to start lifting.

And time for a STUPID question. The only way I know how to get on US 1 in Virginia is the exit off the Beltway near the Woodrow Wilson bridge. This is WAY out of my way coming from Silver Spring. Is there an easier way to get there? Anyone? (And YES, I’ve lived here all my life…just 22 years of it was in Annapolis, not in Montgomery County…)

Piece of cake.

Beltway toward Beltsville. Next exit past Beltsville is the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. Head south (toward DC). Parkway turns into 295 South. Stay on 295 South until you see sign for the Beltway to Virginia. That exit is right at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. Cross the bridge and you are at the Route 1 exit.

Much easier to do than write.

Good directions, Barney! Only thing I’d add is that the B-W Pkwy splits as it heads inbound toward DC, with one fork turning into NY Avenue, and the other becoming 295. 295 should be the left fork, but it’s been awhile.

Peta & Phil:

I can’t hep y’all at this distance, but would if I could. Good luck, and best wishes for as smooth a move as possible!

Here’s my plan: we meet at the Ranch House, 6325 Richmond Highway (US 1).

Take VA Exit 1 south (3rd and final ramp, for those of us coming over the Wilson Bridge; 1st ramp, for those coming from the west); it’s about 3 miles South of the Beltway on the left, just past the light for Kings Highway. Mapquest will give you a good map, if you want.

Now all we need to decide on is a time. How about 10am?

10 it is. See you tomorrow morning!

10!!! I gotta get up early? On a SATURDAY??? Oh, all right. (Just kidding. See y’all tomorrow!)

One final bump couldn’t hurt…
