Beer Non-snobs: Stand up and be counted!

When I drink beer… I drink Corona…and yes I like it much better with a wedge of lime. What can I say, I am a wine drinker.

welcome to MPSIMS Pantellerite!

I really try to be good but it just isn’t in my nature!

Yeah, I love a good Filet Mignon… but I don’t get upset if I have to eat Sirloin most days.

I’d love to always fly first class… but if I just need to get there I’ll take coach.

I enjoy going to the five star restaurant… but for the quick lunch Burger King still fills me up.

I love micro-brews and imports… but for everyday use a good old Bud Light hits the spot.

Pantellerite: Pearl beer is great and Alpine is one of the best places in Texas. Have you (or anyone else) ever encountered Jax beer? Or Lone Star? Jax beer was the cheapest beer around, and as beer goes, it would make a good paint stripper. I don’t remember much about Lone Star, probably because I once drank way too much Jax.

Coldfire, I’m not even offended by your calling me (us) amateurs.

Maybe because deep down, I know you’re right. My brother-in-law is Australian, and I also have a good friend you annually visits England, and both tell me that Western Civ. beers don’t cut it.

I envy you, Coldfire.

I remember Red,White and Blue from my high shcool days. Who has fifty cents? Get 4 people to pony up and a sibling who’s over 21 and you’ve got yourself a case of beer!

Party on!

Guinness is my absolute favorite. Guinness is the nectar of the gods. But, Guinness is, I dunno, special (read: expensive and much better on tap). You need to drink that out in a bar with your friends.

For regular, let’s grab some beer and watch baseball, beer, I go with Labatt’s, Molson Golden, or Rolling Rock - whichever is cheaper at the time.

Lexi - what a coincidence! My boyfriend’s favorite beer is Cold and Free, too!

I follow your logic exactly. My subject is cigars however. Sure, Swisher Sweets may have more chemicals than a Russian Munitions factory, but dammit, they’re $1.45 a pack, and for a cheap bastard like me, they’re pretty damn good. (And yes, before you try to flame me for not knowing any better, I have had a Cuban before

If you want to drink regular American beer, avoid the brand names. You will pay twice as much for Budweiser as will pay for Natural, both brewed by Anhauser-Busch. Same beer. Every large brewery has its generic beer which is the same as its premium. Try it and save big bucks

The philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways; the point, however, is to change it. (Karl Marx, 1845)

Sometimes I just want to relax with a couple of beers–that’s when I go for the Sierra Nevada Pale or Celebration, the Franziskaner, the Goose Island, or the Guinness on tap (any other way, in my eyes, is heresy).

Usually after a big test or other major event, I feel like getting hammered. In those cases, Cold and Cheap is the way to go, and I’m not above it.

I frequently compromise, either by starting with a quality brew and moving to the El Cheapo brand, or with Killian’s or Amber Bock, both of which I find tasty yet drinkable.

My senior undergrad year (two years ago), we developed a taste for Old Milwaukee–$7.99 a case in returnable bottles, plus a $1.20 deposit, which we would forfeit so we could use the bottles for my homebrew. Every time one of us opened one, we had to sing the song–“There’s nothing like the taste of a special place, and that Old Milwaukee Beer!” (We got a keg once for a party. No one stayed very long.)

I normally stick to Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Dos Equis or Heineken, but if I’m camping, having a barbeque, Sunday morning NASCAR or just messin around outside, Oly and Ranier are fan-fuckin-tastic. Since I moved back down to CA though, the crap beer is actually crap, so I buy anything, Old Milwaukee, Schlitz, Hamms, whateva…

For me, it depends on the environment. If I’m with a good friend or friends and we’re drinking, I’ll chew on ESB or Guiness, or maybe even Elephant. And I always like to try a new one. But if I’m in a less familiar social environment and feel I might need longer legs, I do just fine with Bud Lite.

I got through college with good ol’ Buckhorn ($0.99/six-pack).

Cheers!

Too bad you didn’t drink Loenbrau (sp?):

First: you’re right–Alpine is one of the best (if not the best) places in Texas.

Second: Never tried Jax, but before I adopted Miller Lite, Lone Star was my regular beer of choice (again, unless Shiner was on sale). I’ve recently “re-discovered” Lone Star and found that a wedge of a lime improves it dramatically and makes its taste approximate that of a less cheap Mexican beer (think Carta Blanca).

As an avowed Beer Non-snob, I will admit that when I do field work away from Texas, I love to try new beers. Obsidian Stout from the Deschutes Brewery (Bend, OR) may be my all-time favorite. Likewise, if I’m in a social situation that is less “redneckian” than usual (i.e., almost anything that my wife wants me to go to–especially Biology dept. (ugh!) functions), I’ll pick out something more uppity.

But–except for those two conditions, I’m usually looking for quantity, not quality, and it’s gotta be Miller Lite!
