I plan on downloading SMB2 tonight, for revenge purposes. I never beat that game when I was a kid, despite countless hours invested, and it’s high time I do so.
Last time I checked, though, the minimum Wii points you can buy is 1,000, so I’ll have 500 leftover after my purchase.
I’ve played SMB3 and Punch-Out within the last year, and I already downloaded Donkey Kong, so those are out. Saving up for a SNES or N64 game is out for now because I don’t want to go drop another $20 on a Wii Classic Controller. I only have Wiimotes and nunchucks.
So, talk me into buying your favorite 500 point game.
I dunno, 4 out of 10? I was thinking you of all people would have something really elaborate to say :).
I was reading about NG3 yesterday and I believe it was the Wikipedia article that said most fans hated it. I’ll look into Star Tropics. You raise one good point, though . . . I never beat either of the NES Zelda games, and they’re both on the Virtual Console.
Sorry, I’ve played a lot of NES games to death, so they make up only a small portion of my VC purchases. But I love NG3, I think because they finally perfected the controls. Yes, the Super Sword makes the game a bit easier than the first two, but it’s still a damn good game.
I’ve been debating with myself about getting some N64 games, but since I have to make the $20 controller purchase, the first game is going to cost me $30. I can find a used cartridge for less than that and dust off my old N64.
The ones that are tempting me are:
Paper Mario - never played it. LOVED MarioRPG, bored to tears with Super Paper Mario
Mario 64 - Only played it for about 20 minutes
Ocarina of Time - Rented it when it came out and played maybe 1/3 before I had to return it
MK64 and WR64 are two of the very few games I played to death on the N64. They were daily after-school rituals with my buddies when I was in high school.
Super Mario World is probably the console game I have the most time logged on, ever.
Have you played Paper Mario? I’m wondering if it’s closer to SMRPG or SPM.
Nope. I’ve only played SMRPG (which I would love to play again, but alas). But I’ve heard that most people that like SMRPG aren’t too fond of Paper Mario.
I was so excited for SPM and then immensely let down when I finally got it. It could’ve been a good platformer or a good RPG, but it tried to be both and failed at both, IMO. I was hoping Paper Mario might be the succesor to SMRPG that I was looking for.
I haven’t played New Super Mario Bros but it looks fun. Is there any talk of a VC release for that?
Super Paper Mario isn’t a Paper Mario game except in terms of humour and such, in fact a lot of fans (well… ME at least) went “wtf?” When we saw it. Don’t get me wrong SMRPG and PM are two very games, and many who like one dislike the other, however I’d give it a try they’re both very good games and they’re both dear to me, just go into it treating it like a new game rather than buying it for the sole purpose of finding a spiritual successor to SMRPG.
Wouldn’t be surprised if they released an “enhanced” version of it as Wii-Ware or something myself.
Can someone explain to me what’s so awesome about River City Ransom? I watched a little clip on youtube and it looks like a primitive Final Fight - just moving forward and punching throughout the entire game.
How does Kid Icarus hold up these days? It was one of my favorites as a kid but I never beat it.
Is Super Paper Mario really that bad? I bought it filled with excitement and it just sits around gathering dust, but then, the same happens for me with Super Mario Galaxy, which by all accounts is a great game. I think my problem is more a lack of free time than any problem with the games themselves. [Actually, in my limited playing of both, I think I enjoyed Super Paper Mario far more so far; I keep wanting Super Mario Galaxy to turn into Mario 64, and it hasn’t quite done that yet, though I’ve only just barely cracked into it (played it thrice, I think?), so I couldn’t really say]
Anyway, what exactly are the problems with Super Paper Mario? My only concerns, in my limited playing, were over-long cutscenes and the lack of a run button. But given the near-unanimity here, I’m curious what awaits me in the manner of boredom when I return to play it.
These two alone were huge for me. ISTR something like 20+ minutes of cutscenes before you can even start playing. At least it felt that long. And they don’t let up all that much as the game progresses. You do eventually get a pixel (the floaty one) that makes you move a little faster, but the lack of a run button is inexcusable. Super Mario RPG was a full-blown, turn-based RPG and even that had a run button.
I also, personally, just don’t like the aesthetic of the game very much. I could deal with the paper cutout look if everything else appealed to me, but I don’t care much for the level design, or Count Bleck & Co., or the look and feel of the main city, etc. etc.
And the mechanics of the game just feel off to me. The gameplay does not flow at all. It’s very choppy, with very brief moments of fun - or even brilliance - that only seem to highlight how boring most of the game is. Like I said before, it could’ve been a good RPG or a good platformer, but the weird mix they churned out failed at being a good anything.
What I’m curious about is why all the websites and magazines raved about this game and gave it near perfect reviews, but every single person I’ve talked to who has played it has been disappointed.
Cisco, you might be interested to know that Nintendo added Magnetica Twist, a remake of a DS game, to the WiiWare service this week. So who knows, you might get your wish on New Super Mario Bros. someday.
Very cool, thanks! That’s good news. There seems to be a lot of cool games for the DS, and I’ve thought about getting one, but I just can’t see when and where I’d ever play a handheld game. I don’t see any reason for them to not throw them up on the VC. Especially the ones that are a couple years old and not selling like hotcakes anymore - it would almost be free money for them at this point.
