When has what Maureen Dowd thinks ever meant anything?
That just says his history is fair game. That doesn’t mean the media will exploit it, or that it will gain any traction if they do.
And the article from The Week remarks on what Trump is more likely to get:
So, yeah, I have see this movie before; conspiracy theories and pumped up charges that end up looking as very stupid points coming from the Republicans for many Americans.
Go ahead Mr. Trump. We already know who are your sources and the ones you are palling around with.
Simply by talking about Bill instead of Donald is a win for Donald. Even if the media is supportive of Bill on this one, this is not the subject Hillary would like to have a national discussion about. Given her cautious nature, I think we’ve heard the last of her “war on women” schtick.
Nothing about this is new for the Clintons, or for the public – this stuff was publicly litigated years ago. The last time there was a big long public discussion about Bill Clinton’s sex life, his approval rating went way up.
I see no reason to believe that it would be any more effective for Republicans now, especially if it’s led by someone like Trump. I think Hillary is smiling at this stuff – she wants this to be her vs Trump, and she’ll happily go back to “war on women”, I think.
You seem to think Trump’s comments about Bill stung Hillary. I think you will be proven wrong. Every time Trump opens his mouth about how women love him, Hillary’s stock goes up. I would expect more on Trump’s misogyny from Hillary, not less.
Framing this as Hillary vs. Trump is misleading. Hillary’s general election opponent is likely to be a different Republican, one without Trump’s personal liabilities. She’s going to have to convince people that Republican national policies hurt women a lot more than her husband’s individual behavior. I think it’s a case that can be made.
The point here isn’t about making it a battle between Bill Clinton and Donald Trump. This is an attempt by the Republicans to attack Hillary Clinton’s demographic base.
Hillary Clinton is probably going to win the Democratic nomination which will make her the first female presidential candidate from a major party. That’s going to motivate women to get out and vote and it will swing some of those votes to her. And that will be a disaster for the Republicans, not just in the presidential race but also in congressional and other races.
So the Republicans want to suppress that vote. They know there’s not a lot they can do to win over these female voters (What are they going to do? Run on their record on women’s issues?) but they can hope to keep those women from voting.
Attacking Hillary Clinton herself would cause a backlash among female voters. So they’re attacking Bill Clinton; Bill cheated on Hillary, Bill will try to run the Presidency, Bill’s a rapist, etc. It’s an attempt to make both sides look so sexist that women just give up in disgust and sit out Election Day.
well yeah, if it’s Trump vs. Clinton, Clinton wins. But since Trump won’t win the nomination, it’s fun to have him go directly after Clinton and remind the public what a sleaze he is. Most voters think Clinton just liked women and got in trouble for an affair. The reality of Clinton is that his misadventures go way beyond the usual. Two sexual harassment complaints, a rape complaint, and a good friend in jail for boinking a kid when Bill probably should have been aware of it puts Hillary in a tough position to claim she’s a champion of women. It also doesn’t hurt to remind the public of her close relationship with Anthony Weiner. She’s right that she knows a lot about bad men, as she put it. She surrounds herself with them and relies on their counsel.
Fun like seeing a critic of gun control shooting himself in the foot. I think that a lot of sleazy things will come out from Trump as he is taking more rope to hang himself.
I think you’re seriously overestimating the credence that non-Trump-fans will pay to any Trump criticism of the Clintons, especially about something personal. Again, none of this is new at all – the public has been through this and sided with Bill, pretty overwhelmingly.
No one’s accused Weiner of anything non-consensual, not that anyone cares about his silliness anymore. I think you’re really reaching if you think any of this stuff matters in any significant way for Hillary. Everyone who would hate Bill already hates him, and those who like him (or like his politics even if they don’t like his person) already know all of this. There’s pretty much no one in the middle on this, except perhaps very recent immigrants.
Wasn’t his whole thing sending women unsolicited dick pics?
Trump’s “good friend” Jeffrey Epstein? Puts Trump in a tough position to claim anything about anyone else, don’t it?
Yeah, I tend to doubt that “The Donald” really wants to talk about who “probably should have been aware of it” all that much!
CMC fnord!
That’s the other funny part. The Clintons’ attraction to scumbags includes Donald Trump. Bill even thought he should run for President!
Great judgement, those folks.
And that is why I think Bill already helped Hillary become president.
I have to admit, if Bill did encourage Trump, it’s a strategy with surprisingly good results. I doubt it (or Trump) will last beyond the first serious round of primaries, but it’ll be fun in the meantime.
I’m concerned with the obsession some people seem to have with Bill Clinton’s penis, which, as far as I can tell, is not running for any government position.
I didn’t know the unsolicited part.
