Yes and no. Obviously, the security folk have to be able to recognize the congresspersons. That shouldn’t be a problem for a Representative who is serving her sixth term, I would think. But I think the congresscritters are also supposed to wear a lapel pin to authenticate their identity. Perhaps McKinney wasn’t wearing hers at the time of the incident; the Seattel Times article linked seems to indicate this was the case.
…and being a conspiracy nut.
Eh. Everybody knows she’s a loon.
What I’d like to know is, in her role as a Congresswoman, has good faith Democracy been permanently scarred, as it has with Delay?
This looks like the same old mean-spirited, dumbass Republican bullshit where they harp on someone’s minor indiscretion while at the same time getting a whole bunch of people killed, maimed or disenfranchised with theirs.
Shodan should be ashamed of himself for introducing partisanship into the Dope. And the Pit, no less.
Cynthia McKinney’s own website confirms that she "represents backbone in politics. Leadership with courage and integrity.’ Furthermore, she is Misrepresented in the Media.
This speech transcript should confirm even to the rankest doubters her integrity and rationality.
Shame, shame, shame on Shodan.
And shame on the rest of you for forcing a wonderful man (Tom DeLay) from office. He is one of the most wonderful Republicans ever. John Boehner says so. If it weren’t for him, southeast Texas would be overrun with cockroaches.
Some people apparently have nothing better to do than snipe at good Americans.
Article I, Section 6:
I suppose it depends on whether her striking an officer is deemed a felony or a breach of the peace.
Oh we do, but for those who still feel some lingering loyalty to either party, it is easiest to point at disgraced politicians from the other side of the aisle. One might think that this would take more work than simply recognizing the obvious truth, that Delay is a corrupt asshole and McKinney is a freaking nutball, but human nature being what it is, illogical rationalizations are often the first step towards the discovery of an unpleasant truth.
And the truth is that both parties suck and suck hard.
Yeah, but their respite is over: he’s coming home.
Daniel
Actually, I heard he was establishing residence in Virginia. That would have nothing to do with any indictment stuff in Texas, and I am ashamed of you for even thinking of it.
I read that as saying they can’t be arrested during those specific times, but that can be arrested at any other time (even for crimes committed during those specific times).
Oh, no - are you serious? Swell. We’ll be one step closer to a “Virginia” tag on FARK.
Also, for what it’s worth, her physical appearance has changed significantly recently. That might have had a role.
Actually, I don’t think it does (and it wouldn’t help him much). Right now, DeLay owns a house in Sugar Land, Texas (in his district), and also one in Alexandria, VA (where he lives while he’s in Washington). His official residence is in Sugar Land. The thing is, he won the 2006 Republican primary and is on the ballot in 2006. According to Texas law, the only way to get him off the ballot at this point is for him to die, get convicted of a felony, or move out of the district. Since he doesn’t want to die or get convicted of a felony, changing his official residence to Alexandria, VA lets his name get removed from the ballot and replaced by another Republican candidate.
As I understand it, and I can be in error, you can’t even give someone a speeding ticket on their way in.
Thus, the policeman had, if I’m remembering right, no right to stop her on her way in.
Hm. Or perhaps not.
Evidently it has to do with the metal detector. Congressmen and -women are allowed to simply walk around it. McKinney did this, as is her right. But she didn’t have on her pin, which she is supposed to have in order to enjoy the privilege. The cop was new and didn’t know who she was/recognize her. He called after her a few times to stop. After she didn’t respond he ran after her and grabbed her arm to turn her around, at which point she turned and hit him in the chest. part of her beef is that it was the cop’s supervisor’s responsibility to acquaint him with all members of congress.
I remember when this first came on TV while I was eating and her picture appeared on the screen, I had no idea who it was. I’m used to seeing her with her hair braided tight against her head. Her new hairdo reminded me more of Ededie Murphy’s Buckwheat than the Cynthia McKinney I have pictured in my head, so I understand how someone might not recognize her, even if he was not new to the post.
How dare those cops actually stop someone who isn’t wearing an ID! Don’t those idiot cops realize that rules and regulations are only for the ‘little people?’ Didn’t they realize who McKinney was? She’s more important than their silly little laws! Don’t they frickin’ know that ?!?!
Oh, and meanwhile there’s this:
*Rep. Cynthia McKinney admits that she broke government rules by spending money to fly a celebrity to Atlanta.
Channel 2 Action News has uncovered documents showing McKinney, D-Ga., spent about $1,000 of taxpayer’s money to fly singer Isaac Hayes to Georgia to help dedicate a new office in Atlanta.*

Let’s all wait for the lib outrage on this, huh? Hello? Hello? Is this thing on? <tap, tap> Hello?
I assume you’re tapping your head there, Stephe. Check out post 6 and the ensuing crickets.
It’s on, but it’s not working. Try giving it a good kick.
Daniel
Nice baiting, but it won’t fly. In case you haven’t noticed, nobody’s exactly leapt to her defense here. In fact, some folks ::cough cough:: have pointed out that she’s a loon.
What a pathetic non-story.
Drats! Beaten to the punch again!
