For the record, I never called for violence - that was Happy Lendervedder’s interpretation of my comments.
A week or so ago, under the influence of some booze, I think I said maybe it’s time to “get nasty.” Republicans - not just trolls on the internet but elected officials and shock jock talk show hosts with millions of brainwashed and easily influenced followers - have been increasingly winking and nodding over the years about violence. We hear about “2nd Amendment solutions” and talks of “civil war” and how 'Heh! The military’s on our side and we’re NRA members, so we’d probably kick librul butt in a war." We hear that shit all the fucking time. And let’s be real: they say this shit to intimidate others. Like the suspected mail bomber, they probably don’t want a thing to do with an actual war, but they like the idea of bullying and intimidating others because it makes these pathetic fucks feel powerful. They enjoy shouting people down because they assume that anyone who disagrees with them is a pussy. And it makes them feel powerful and big, and superior, and that’s what they identify with.
What does being ‘nasty’ mean? Being “nasty” means enough of that shit. I leave people alone. I live and let live, but someone shouts me down and I’m going to shout right the fuck back. I’m going to give them some intimidation back. I’m not gonna back up or back down. I’m done trying to be civil, done trying to find common ground. There is no common ground with people like that. But most progressives here already seem to understand that, and sorry Lendervedder, not to keep reeling you back into this, but I give my fellow frustrated progressives credit enough to understand that a few raw rants aren’t going to induce anyone here into lawlessness. I’m just saying, let’s stop pretending that we can have dialog with these idiots. They’re American ‘brown shirts’ - I agree, that’s not a nice thing to say, but you know what? If they don’t want that label, then maybe think about why that label exists and whether or not they’re comfortable associating with gutter politics and demonization of the ‘other’. To the so-called ‘independents,’ ‘moderates’ and centrists…you all need to pick a side. What kind of country do you want to live in - one in which people receive bombs in the mail for their political views? One in which militias roam around and terrorize people in small town America and local law enforcement turns the other way? Stop believing this ‘both sides’ shit. Wake up. Take sides. Take a stand against fake piety and stand up to fake warriors.
