The 95 93 interchange during evening rush hour is the pit. 95 will be jammed for a long way back. So will 93 north. So will 2 east to 16.
However, traffic usually seems calmed down a bit after 6:15, so I honestly don’t think there will be much of a problem. I’d stick to 90, too, because there shouldn’t be any traffic on it until you hit 93, and you won’t be going out of the way.
anyone who actually commutes that way might want to pipe in, but I think traffic calms down considerably after 6:15 or so.
Spiritus doesn’t know the meaning of the word! Well, I know it, just not in this context.[sup]1[/sup]
I figured that driving time would be an issue, which is why I suggested 7:30. I should be able to leave Milford by 5:30 at the latest. That should give me planty of time, even with the hideous I-95 detour. (In a fit of poetic justice, I must mention that I go out of my way every day to avoid I-95 in Florida. Wouldn’t you know that I’d fly 1000 miles only to fall into it’s insidious trap!)
If I get there early, I’ll just have to start the festivities on my own! (Wait, that would be sadly remeniscent of my current social life. Okay – I’ll just have to wait quietly in the bar.)
[sup]1[/sup][sub]An extra beer (or whatever) on me to the doper who first identifies the riff.[/sub]
In the last few weeks, I’ve seen horrific downtown (I-93) traffic and nonexistent traffic. I’ll concur, it usually calms down after 6:15 or so. (Last Tuesday, I was able to do 60 from Dorchester to the exit for the Pike, slowed down to 10-20 for the tunnel, and then zipped back up to 60 and was over the Tobin Bridge, making it from the South Shroe to Saugus in less than 40 minutes.
It’s much longer to take 95/128 all the way around, and quite possibly no better, traffic-wise. My recommendation would be to take 93 -> Rt. 1, but not between 4:00 and 6:00. Good luck.
Unfortunately, Jen went into labor this morning. Which means I’m taking over her Monday night closes. Looking at the prelim schedule for next week, I have Wednesday and Thursday off I believe it is. So if anyone’s up for a round 2, let me know. Otherwise, it looks like I’m gonna miss this one. Sorry babes. Next time, I promise.
The Big Dig is not a multimillion dollar project. The current estimated cost is $14 billion (over $1 billion per mile of road built, I believe). It’s quite impressive from an engineering perspective. Essentially, they are building a large highway underground directly below a large elevated highway without stopping the traffic on it.
Incidentally, this weekend they are changing the route from Storrow Drive to the Tobin Bridge, and from the Tobin Bridge to I-93. Also, they are eliminating the bottleneck where Storrow Drive traffic enters I-93, as all Storrow Drive traffic will now cross the little bridges first. The bottom line is that the Central Artery (I-93) will no longer shrink to two lanes there, increasing capacity by an estimated 2,000 cars per hour. Thus, the I-93 North route will probably clear up sooner than before. Of course, Monday will be the first day of this change.
I’d estimate (though I don’t know) that going into Boston shouldn’t be too bad as long as you stay on the highways. Or at least, better than any alternate routes I can think of. 128 (I-95) out where it crosses I-90 is pretty bad. At least going south, which is all I really know, but I don’t think north is really any better.
Actually, you WANT to be going on Route 1 South. The Hilltop is ON Route 1 going South.
I will be there, but maybe a little late, as I have to get MiliCal to bed.
OK, so I’ll be there (very probably), but without Mr. Nugent, who’s going to an MIT Rocket Team meeting. (They sort of partway blew things up and had a small fire when they ran their liquid oxygen pumping test over the weekend, and he wants to go to the postmortem).
I’ve been lurking for about a week now and getting no work done (Thanks ENugent ), but this is my first time posting. Do I need to be further initiated into the mysteries of sdmb before attending?
As far as I know, NeilsenE, they are – the more the merrier and that sort of thing. It’s Spiritus’ party, but I’m sure he won’t mind. Come on down!
Oh, I checked on ticketing for the Sox this week … only scattered single seating is available for the rest of the season, the box office told me, and the rest of this week is sold out. Sorry, folks.
I hope you all had a wonderful time, I’m sorry I missed it. If anyone’s up for a second dose, I’m available Tuesday and Wednesday. I’m pretty broke though, so it’d have to be cheap entertainment. If anyone’s up for a little Fall River shindig, I’m dying to show off my new place! Let me know, I’m accomidating.
Thanks to everyone who showed up, and special thanks to Spiritus for buying all the drinks (next time I’ll try not to have gout).I hope I didn’t offend anyone, and I hope my naked dancing on the table during the dessert course wasn’t too far over the edge.
To follow up for those who were interested in Mr. Nugent’s exploits, things look bad for the engine. Two pieces were blown apart, the combustion chamber is pretty beat up, and at least one bearing is broken. To my semitutored eye, it looks like someone did a piss-poor job on the machining they had done for them, but they’re going to ask someone who knows more about fracture surfaces than I do.
Well, by me at least, and isn’t that all that really matters?
Thanks to all who showed up and showed me some Boston hospitality. I have now actually met other dopers in the flesh. I feel so fulfilled. (Maybe that’s just the beer.)
Cal I thought you shaking your groove thing on the table was the high point of the evening – or at least it should have been. Persues would have been proud.
erl: special thanks for providing me a place to chill out and sober up before the drive home. And for tanking the chess games.
For anyone interested, a group of us are going to scalp tickets for teh Thursday evening Redsox game. Details and meeting place will be posted here as soon as one of the local folks figures them out.
Thanks again to all – it was a blast. Enugent, do keep us up to date on rocket-boy’s adventures. Remind him that even if the payload never rises, blowing stuff up is its own reward.
