Boston Public: The New Season

Anyone still watching?

I watched it last night (on tape)…man, what happened to Lauren and Rashida Jones’s character, Louisa? :frowning: And what was the deal with Lauren- at least Stephen made a reference to a new student aide, but Lauren just disappeared.

The new young teachers are all right…Nicky Katt’s hairdo is utterly bizarre.

There’s really hardly any closure here. Did anything happen to the guy who stabbed Harry Senate, and to the guy’s brother? And we never even got to find out what college Jeremy ended up going to. Sigh. Really a rocky transition from season to season.

The riot thing was…bizarrely unrealistic, as usual. It was eerie- it went from people just standing there in completely unrealistic silence to bashing each other in. And Scott trying to put students against each other- slimy as hell…

The baby was pretty cute, but as usual, I don’t think any newborn would look that adorable…

Your thoughts, teeming masses? Please let me know I’m not the only one with a guilty pleasure!

How many riots have they had at this school anyway?

I hope Goober gets his ass handed to him. If anybody else pulled that stunt, he’d be handing that person a quarter and advising them to call the union rep.

I looked up a few things and found out that both Jessalyn Gilsig (Lauren) and Rashida Jones (Louisa) elected not to return for a new season.

Kind of sucks since there were some storylines that probably won’t get wrapped up, including Guber’s budding romance (oddly enough – who would have thunk it, considering season 1) with Lauren.

One thing I read suggested that perhaps Gilsig was not thrilled that her character seemed to take a background role in season 2 (while she was much more of a major player in the storylines in season 1), so she chose not to return. That did seem to be a motif in season 2 – storylines seemed to focus much more heavily on the new teachers. There wasn’t even much focus on Harry Senate until the end of the season.

As for while Rashida Jones left, I have no idea.

I also saw a rumor that Harry Senate would only be in the first 5 or 6 episodes this season, then Nicky Katt (and hence Harry’s character) would be leaving the show. And the IMDB listing seems to support this, listing Nicky Katt’s period with the show as 2000-2002. Damn…

And you’re right – Nicky Katt’s new hairdo was really weird.

Aww, no more Nicky Katt. I found it really ironic that he was jumping up startled when a student dropped a book- remember when he fired off a gun, and then the following day, popped a balloon to wake up a sleeping girl, nearly frightening her to death? Now he knows how it feels to fear for your life in a classroom…

I hope there’s more of Harvey Lipshultz- would be really great if he did end up giving the sex lecture. Plus I loved the line about saving the lecture till the holiday season.

I missed the last couple of episodes last year, so while I knew something happened to Nicky Katt’s character, I wasn’t sure exactly what. So for a minute or two I thought he had had chemo and was wearing an extremely cheap wig to hide his bald head.

As for the plotting - In any real school there wouldn’t be enough teachers left to start the day. One teacher lies to the police; another is picked up for soliciation; a third is beyond senile; the v.p. encites a riot.

I know that B.P. needs a crisis of the week and that it’s an amalgamation of everything that takes place in all high schools everywhere, but it only works as long as the characters can stay believable. We have to see all sides and identify with all the forces that are pulling them every which way. Kelley has to get back to giving the characters some real personalities or I won’t finish watching this season either.

I’m just waiting for the episode where they find out that the school was built on an ancient Indian burial ground. It’s the only explanation for everything that happens there.

Although I’d say his new-found jumpy-ness at sharp sounds (supposedly sounding like possible gunshots?) doesn’t make that much sense, considering that he was stabbed by his attacker at the end of season 2, not shot.

I wish they’d bring Lisa Grier back. I liked her…

I thought that was weird, too, and I was wondering if I’d remembered wrong and he was shot, not stabbed. I think it was just a general post traumatic stress thing, at least if we’re to believe Ronnie Cook.

Which teachers will sleep together next? I’ve got my eye on Marla and Lipshultz…or maybe more realistically, Danny and Marilyn. And I could see one of the younger new teachers getting involved with a student.

Well did you see tonight’s episode – and more importantly the previews for next week? Looks like to calm the Danny/Marla strife, Steven counsels Marla to be more friendly to Danny and defuse the situation. The next clip insinuates that Marla has gone and told Danny that she is attracted to him! Oh good lord…

And in the “Who won’t be sleeping together anymore” department, looks like Harry may be sleeping alone again soon. Tonight’s show made it look like he was about to get the boot – and only two episodes after Ronnie asked “do you think we could start to date?”

Marilyn getting hammered was pretty funny.

It’s strange that the show is now in its third season, and I still have no idea what subject some of the teachers teach. Marla, Harvey and Lauren were social studies, and since Harry took over Marla’s class at the beginning of the first season, it would make sense to assume he does also, though the few times we actually have seen a lesson being discussed, it’s been lit, which would imply English.

Marilyn appeared to be a music teacher, except for the episodes in which she’s in a standard classroom, and this episode she was teaching journalism. I have no idea what Danny and Six of Nine teach.

I loved the biology teacher from last year (the guy who resigned after it was found he was engaging in live sex chat with students).

I find it bizarre that the student issues for the walkout were class size and outdated textbooks, and they seemed to think the teachers didn’t care about these things. These are pretty much always among the top issues for teachers. Then, after making such an issue over class size in many episodes–it’s used as an excuse for keeping teachers (like Harry) who should have been fired long, long ago–every classroom scene has reasonably-sized classes.

Well, I think it has been stated that Harry is a Geology teacher. But the “Dungeon” assignment seems to be kind of a full-time full-topic sort of thing. I get the impression that the Dungeon kids don’t switch classes – that ALL their subjects are in there – a special separate class for the troublemakers. So I figure Harry has to do a jack-of-all-trades kind of thing. He was leading a discussion of “Moby Dick” in the premiere this season, so obviously he’s doing English/Literature in the mix.

I’m not real sure about Ronnie or Danny – their subjects. Most of the second season scenes in Danny’s class were during “Talk Time”.

Danny is a Health/PE teacher. “Talk Time” makes sense in a Health class milieu.

Did anybody else think it was odd to see a television production class in a school that doesn’t have enough textbooks?

I always found it pretty odd that the choir director sings as much, if not more, than the actual choir.

I thought Marilyn did English and singing as an afterschool thing.

Harry as a geology teacher?

(Ahh…I better not come here till I see the new episode- I’ve got it on tape!!)

Awwwwwwwwwwww, that story line with Scott “pulling a Harry Senate” to help out that kid Ian was adorable. And the entrapment thing was pretty fun.

Wonder what will happen tomorrow. Marla “seducing” Danny- wowza…how disturbing.
