The skinny on talk radio and in other reports is that Favre really wanted Moss and was pissed when the Packers were unwilling to offer more than a 5th round draft pick or to guarantee his salary. From here
It’s hard to believe that Packers would really trade him but it’s an interesting story and it does confirm the rumors that Favre had pushed hard to get “Straight Cash” on his offense. I saw another report that said Tom Brady talked “for hours” with Moss during the draft and persuaded him to come to the Patriots (and Moss has apparently been given a locker right next to Brady’s in the Pats locker room). By that time it was too late for the Packers to go after any decent receivers in the draft. I think Favre feels like he’s only got one or two good years left in him and that he’s now going to play out his string on a rebuilding team with a crappy offense.
If he were to get traded, there are definitely some contending teams who could use a short term quarterback fix (the Bears come immediately to mind) and Favre probably wouldn’t cost more than a 3rd round draft pick. I’d personally kind of like to see him try a swan song with a different team. I’d take him on the Vikings, that’s for sure.
ETA: Moss has gotten some pretty short shrift from the press lately about his ability to help a team but I think it must say something about him that quarterbacks the caliber of Favre and Brady still so badly want to throw to him. I think he’s going to rejuvenate himself in Boston and probably would have done so in Green Bay too, if Ted Thompson hadn’t gotten so cute about trying to lowball the Raiders.
I’m not sure how much the Bears fans would love it, either. My husband has hated Favre for so long, I don’t think he would want him to be a Bear even if it would guarantee us a Super Bowl win.
It’s Favre’s own damn fault. He’s created this mess with his ego-driven Hamlet routine, and now it’s come back to bite him in the ass.
Every year Favre lets everyone think it’s his last. The team isn’t going to piss off their fans by taking away his farewell season, so they keep him around, even though the team has needed rebuilding for several years now. And every year its “nope, one more.”
If His Highness had said in 2003 that he was going to play for 4-5 more years, the team could have undergone a rebuilding process, signed free agents to long-term deals, used that pick on something other than Aaron Rodgers, and be in position to give Favre a better team by now. Failing that, he could have gone elsewhere and had a nice end of his career elsewhere and the Packers could have moved on.
Instead he’s kept them in limbo, saying he didn’t want to leave but refusing to commit to staying. And in fact, he’s still doing it.
I hope he ends up staying, and I hope they suck.
Better, I hope he forces a trade, and I hope that team sucks, and the Packers make the playoffs without him.
Lions fan speaking up. I’ll take a Favre for a year.
Part of me wants to see him out of the division. Part of me wants to watch him make boneheaded plays, but a pissed off Brett is not something I wanna see against me. A pissed off Brett is nothing that the Packers want to keep in the NFC if the Packers can help it. God help the Packers if they magically make it to the Super Bowl and have to face Favre. That would be a perfect 100 out of 100 on the Vengeance Scale.
Favre couldn’t guarantee the Colts or the Patriots a Super Bowl appearance if he was magically made their starting quarterback. He’s a washed-up has been who doesn’t know when not to pass the ball. His only years of real value came when he was under the guidance of Holmgren, who knew how to keep Favre leashed. Since then, Favre’s inablity to understand that the team can win best by his NOT throwing the ball into opposing backs’ arms has hurt the Packers considerably.
