Brett Favre go away!

Does any Viking fan seriously think they will get 16 games out of Adrian Peterson? He’s a great talent, but I just don’t see him getting through an entire season without injury.

Madden '09 has spoken

The Jets will make the playoffs with Favre. Also, the Pack will be 12-4, Aaron Rodgers is the next great NFL QB, the Bucs are better off with Garcia than Favre.

Oh, and Tavaris Jackson and the Vikings are teh suck.

This should end all discussion, as the Xbox has adjudicated.

And Dio, here’s the closest you’ll get to a purple #4 jersey.

I figured if I was all-powerful and in charge of the world for a day, I’d have the respective Hall of Fames only take you in with your last team (thread) . Not to make a statement, just to mess with them. Oh, and I’d make it retroactive. And I wouldn’t accept ceremonial contracts for retirements.

Brett Favre would be a Jet
Emmitt Smith would be a Cardinal
Joe Montana would be a Chief
Jerry Rice would a Seahawk (or would it be Bronco?)
Ronnie Lott would be a Jet
OJ Simpson would be a 49er (since the 49ers seem to lose so many)

And the ultimate:
Johnny Unitas would be a Charger

Although free agency would make this harder, I’ll pick on the other leagues, too.
Michael Jordan would be a Wizard
Hakeem Olajuwon would be a Raptor
Willie Mays would be a Met
Babe Ruth would be a Brave

Favre went away. He is a Jet. Pennington must be delighted.

Better plan: the Hall only takes you as a member of your first team.

Steve Young as a Buccaneer. Well, if you don’t count the USFL.
Bo Jackson as a Buccaneer. Well, if you don’t count the fact that Jackson never signed with the Bucs and buggered off to play baseball instead.
Doug Williams as a Buccaneer.

And… uh… that’s it. We may have drafted shitty players, but by god we never let the less shitty ones get away.

Much.

Brett Favre as an Atlanta Falcon.

Eli Manning (okay, projecting a bit) as a Charger…

So let’s see, the Packers are where they were when Brett “retired”. Well actually they now have an extra draft pick, anywhere from a first to a fourth rounder.

Should make for an interesting season. Of course, Dio already knows that Rodgers will throw 8 interceptions in the first game, Adrian Peterson will run for 3,000 yards for the season, and Brett Favre will be deterimined by scientists as the sole cause of global warming.

That would have been nice. Let him start and end his career in Atlanta.

Actually, the sheer volume of idiotic nonsense spewing from the mouths of the sports talking heads about how “the Packers totally mishandled the situation” is the cause of global warming.

Dude, Gene Wojciechowski from ESPN is the first sportswriter I’ve ever seen to embarass himself over Brett Favre more egregiously than Peter King. Wojciechowski’s columns are just pitiful lately. He just hates Ted Thompson for being mean to his idol, and it’s really, really unbecoming of a professional journalist.

I have decided: I am rooting for the Packers this year, and Aaron Rodgers especially. Just to spite idiots like Wojciechowski.

The Packers ended up minimizing the damage, but I wouldn’t say they handled it masterfully. The attempted bribe was a really stupid blunder, as was the inane declaration that there would ever be an “open competition” for the starting QB position in Green Bay. Planting the false cell phone story was the dumbest thing of all. They were always going to have to either start him or trade him and all their stalling just created distractions for their team and forever tainted their relationship with a player who had done more for their franchise than anyone since Lombardi.

Not only that, it was a stupid football decision. With Favre, they could have contended for a division championship. With Rodgers, they’re contending for a top ten draft pick.

Not counting special teams, a quarterback is one of 22 starters on a football team. While they probably have the most affect on team performance, no qb is the difference between a super bowl contender and a 6-10 team. Farve isn’t the best QB in the league, and Rodgers won’t be the worse. Do you think the Jets are now a super bowl contender?

I didn’t say the Pack could have contended for a Superbowl, I said they could have contended for the division. I do think a QB can make a team into a division contender, and I do think the Jets are now division contenders.

There was no “attempted bribe”. They offered him the “personal services contract” in March; it was just that nobody paid attention until July, so when it was reported, everyone started assuming they offered it recently to make him go away.

The cell phone story wasn’t false at all; Favre did speak to the Vikings on his company phone. It just wasn’t about him playing there.

What, exactly, has Favre done for their franchise? He won one Superbowl- credit for which should go at least equally to Mike Holmgren- and a bunch of individual awards.

Jets potentially can beat the Patriots now, because now they aren’t as worse at QB? That is silly. The Jets were a 7 win team before and maybe an 8 win team now. Football outsiders had them moving from 7.2 wins to 7.6. They have many other players who didn’t suddenly get good, just like the Packers defense and running game didn’t suddenly got bad. The Packers still probably have the best QB in the division. In fact, I would consider it much more likely that the Packers still win the division then the Jets.

Odds of winning division

Packers 40%
Jets 1%

Regardless, you don’t screw your future to win a division title. A super bowl yes, but not a division title.

Cite? And it was still a bribe, no matter when they offered it. Favre certainly called it an attempted “payoff.”

The cell phone story absolutely was false. Both Favre and the Packers are saying there was no team cell phone.

Maybe you don’t remember what the packers had become before Favre got there. They were perenniel cellar dwellers whose glory days were ancient history. Favre made them into a perennial playoff team and took them to two Superbowls, but more than that, he restored the image of the franchise as a jewel of the NFL and professional sports.

The Jets can at least contend for wild card. And I thinkthe idea that starting Favre for one more year would have screwed the franchise is baloney.

You’re missing the point. It doesn’t matter how shitty they were “before he got there”. They were still shitty until Reggie White and Mike Holmgren got there; why should Favre get the credit?

He should get the credit because he single handedly carried that shitty franchise on his back for 16 years. They were ass before he got there and they’ll be ass again now that he’s gone. He never once had another superstar offensive weapon while he was there. He just made average players look better.
