Brett Favre to the Vikings

This is my sole hope. Favre leads the Vikings to Lambeau, and starts throwing interceptions left right and center, blocking his own players out the way as they are run back for scores. The Vikings coach leaves him in the game, figuring that Favre trying to throw a game is probably a better bet than Tavaris Jackson. After the game, Favre gives a press conference after where he actually retires, and says he just wanted to give the Packer’s one more win. Cheering Wisconsinites carry him off into the distance, and everyone lives happily ever after.

Isn’t this true for … umm, pretty much every halfway competent quarterback to ever throw a football?

Favre is Favre. Unless he has Holmgren’s leash around him, he’ll win you a few games, lose you a few games, and throw a bunch of picks. Especially in the playoffs.

Here’s what I said about Favre earlier:

“The thing with Favre, though, is he doesn’t want to have to put in the work to play in the NFL. He doesn’t want to learn the playbook (ask the JETS), or attend off season activities, or get in shape, or bond with his teammates, or even practice. He would still be in the NFL if he could just show up on Sundays and do his thing without having to worry about stupid stuff like practicing, studying film, or dealing with teammates. Much of the retirement crap that has gone on in his career, I am convinced, was simply to get him out of having to practice in the offseason.”

I was right. He waits until training camp is all but finished (lying through his teeth along the way), to sign just so he can avoid actually practicing with the team. And he found a team stupid enough to treat him like a prima donna and pay him a ton of dough without making him show for training camp. Kudos to the Vikings for getting an over the hill prima donna with a penchant for interceptions and a me first attitude. I’m sure they’ll be very happy with him.

It’s going to kill you Packer fans if Favre gets a ring in purple, isn’t it? I admit that half my joy in seeing Favre sign with the Vikes is being able to relish the anguish from the Cheeseheads.

Honestly, I don’t know. On the one hand I want the Vikings to lose. On the other, I would like to see Brett get another Superbowl ring. And I’ll confess to having a liking for AP.

I tend to support the NFC team in the Superbowl as long as it isn’t the Bears, so if the Vikings get there, which I would say they have a good chance of doing now, I’ll root for them I suppose.

I just heard on KFAN that Favre is going to start on friday.

DtC,

It would kill me if the Vikings got a ring no matter who was QB. I grew up in Hudson, Wisconsin so Packers-Vikings was usually bigger than even Packers-Bears.

I feel bad for Sage.

He has a strong arm and excels at late game comebacks, but his reputation for turnovers holds him back.

What?

In case it’s not obvious, Shodan started a second thread about Bretman III: The ReFavrening. I’ve merged it into this older thread.

ETA: And I’ve edited the thread title. I don’t think the question mark is necessary anymore.

What are you expectations, Dio? Will Favre (or more properly AP and the Williams Wall) take the Vikings to the Super Bowl? Will you be upset if they go 10-6 and lose in the first round of the playoffs like last year? Or will you be happy if they do that again?

I’ll be happy if they just go 2-0 against the Packers.

ETA in all seriousness, I don’t know what to expect. Of course I hope they win the Superbowl. I hope that every year. I never honestly expect it, though. I think Favre can at least get them past the first round, and I don’t think a ring is out of the question the way I usually do.

Oh. My. God. Farve holding a Vikings jersey. On KARE11. Right now. Dio’s pig migrated up to my neck of the woods.

Didn’t the Packers offer him $20 Million to stay retired?

Good thing one of the original conditions of his first foray into signing with the Vikings was to do so in a manner that afforded him the “opportunity” to practice with his new teammates in camps. A “reporting/performance” clause, if you will.

Otherwise, you know, his “teammates” might resent him. Or something.

There is no team there now. Yeah, the vets might pull the “Ga Ga over having a legend play here” card, but in the end…this is curtains for the Vikings.

Favre has SO MUCH to prove anymore to back up his knob-schlobbing legend that I will believe it when I see it.

I don’t think I will see it. Fuck that guy, I say. Stay retired, old man riding on your past coattails like an egomaniacal whore-bag. Fuck you, and the media and media personalities that refuse to stop schlobbing your knob.

Just…go away already. You’ve said you would what, like five times now?

I wonder if the refs will protect him? He is a draw.

No. Other QBs aren’t as hesitant to hold on to the ball, take the sack and lose a few yards. Favre is more likely to attempt to thread the needle and make something where there’s nothing. Get’s him into trouble often.

Nonsense. He practices and works hard all season and watches tons of film. The Jets offense was something totally new to him and he learned it as best he could but it can take years to adjust to that style. The Vikings offensive style is what he knows and he even commented that he can run those plays in his sleep. The Vikings playbook was only running at 50% for Tavarus (based on ability) and 50% for Sage (based on knowledge). They are confident Favre can run the playbook at 100%.
It’s no secret he doesn’t like training camp but once the season starts he’s 100% dedicated time and effort wise.

He had decided to stay retired 3 weeks ago and was going to live with that decision. He didn’t come crawling back to the Vikings asking to play, they came back to him. If he doesn’t feel training camp is any benefit to him (the guys been doing this thing for 15+ years) and the coaches and owners feel the same way why is there a problem? He earned it. When the rookies and 3-4 year guys have been around that long maybe they can skip too.

Well shit.

Somebody up there said that Favre can hurt you if he’s got time in the pocket to make passes. Good luck with that; our offensive line is, well, offensive sometimes. (Fucking McKinnie!!) Time is not something they excel at giving.

Dio, you have to know what the PackerBackers are going to say should the Vikings make the playoffs. “Couldn’t do it without a Packer at quarterback, hey?” To say nothing of what they’ll say should the Vikings make the Superbowl. I want my team in the Superbowl, I’d love my team in the Superbowl, but I don’t know if I want them there with #4 at QB.

Gah.

comeback… “Yeah, but he’s one-for-one in Minnesota. He’s one-for-sixteen in Green Bay. You guys were holding him back.”

This is exactly what I said in another thread last month- the Vikings already have a younger, cheaper guy who will throw just as many touchdowns and just as many picks. Unless they’re having trouble selling PSLs or something I don’t see the point.

I hope he gets benched by Week 8 (although I also hope the Vikings do well overall).

Which would you rather have:

Favre with Sage as a backup
or
Sage with Tavarus as a backup?

I think the second choice scared the crap out of Childress and he knew he had to make a last ditch attempt to get Favre. Especially after watching Sage hobble off the field with a twisted ankle and Tavarus stepping in and looking pathetic.

Agreed. Which is why I take what you’re saying as a burst of enthusiasm and nothing more. I’m sure that deep down, you know the Vikings required far more than a once-great QB to fulfill their Super Bowl dreams. So while no one can blame you for being in a good mood today, you’re realistic enough that you’re not going to put money down on something we all know isn’t going to happen.

However, perhaps you could be enticed into something a bit less risky. Like, say, if someone were to lay down twenty bucks saying that the Vikes don’t make the playoffs…?
