I’m still confused about how you can change your IP address just because you have Linux. You say you are a college student and that you have a T3. I’m gonna go out on a limb here, but I’m guessing that the T3 actually belongs to the college. Therefore, they control your IP address. It is most likely assigned from a pool of IP addresses the college owns. If you change your IP address to, say, 128.113.113.33 (cortez.sss.rpi.edu if you must know), any packets that are supposed to go to you will go to that server. I know there are ways of making it look like your IP address is different, but you really don’t know how good the IP Logging feature here is.
Of course, I may be wrong about this, it’s all just a little beyond me. Any real techies out there?

Arrogance and ego can be pulled off in a couple of ways. The first is to do it with panache (like Cecil, or James Bond.) The second is to do it in a joking manner, poking fun at your self.
You are clearly going for the former. I’m sorry to say, I don’t think you are pulling it off all that well.
I have no cause to be upset with you, so accept this as a neutral viewpoint (or not.)
You are coming across as a fairly stereotypical young male computer nerd living out his delusions of grandeur and import in a forum where he thinks his bluff can’t be called.
I think you might be more than that, and have a lot to contribute. If you lose the attitude and stop focussing on yourself we might find out.

Question for you, Urge: So far I’d say the ratio of people you’ve managed to piss off versus the people who say they don’t mind you is about 10 to 1. Does it occur to you that your argument of you being right and everyone else being wrong doesn’t hold much water when you look at those numbers? There has to come some point where you say, “You know, maybe everyone might actually be right.”

aha… also I am NOT a deep expense to mommy and daddy. I have paid my own way through school. Granted I didn’t pay for my current vehicle, the insurance from my first accident did. I’ve even built this computer with my own money. Sure kids these days don’t understand responsibility. Did you undertake a 50,000+ bill the day you graduated highschool at 17?

In linux you can set your ip, your port number and all kinds of other goodies. Its fun. That doesn’t really matter, I wasn’t intending to threaten the board. Just make someone realize what you can do. Yeah there is a pool of IP addresses. I really do know a way of getting around 5000… i could probably have them all put through the laundry too.
Yes they could ban my Ip. However they would have to ban the root. That would make it ugly. That would cut off access to more than 16000 people. At least.

Scylla: you nailed the arrogance thing. I’m one arrogant SOB, and people know it, because I have a sense of irony, and I laugh about it. People know I’m a cocky bastard, but I can still charm the pants off of most anybody (though I choose to antagonize many more).
What the other posters lack (and I think Urge has it down - I have a feeling he’s far more tongue-in-cheek than you guys realize) is a sense of irony. Now I keep on mentioning this irony business.
Agisofia: your ‘flames’ aren’t really flames, but a fairly obvious social self-aggrandizing technique. Clearly the effect is more targeted at yourself than at The Urge.
a-ha: Patronizing bastard, self-thwarting capitalist (irony again). Also, look at his footer and see my point about social climbing below. You make wild assumptions about other people’s lives, suggesting that Urge is dependent on his parents, that he has no sense of responsibility, and that he is a helpless, spoiled child. Perhaps this is a little bit of transferred guilt for being such a hapless parent, family man.
WallyM7: Kind of the same thing, playing the pious card. What a responsible parent. You’re one of the most respected posters on this board, and hell if you aren’t going to live up to it, right? So you’ve got to feed this trolling thread with your ‘DNFTT’ crap, which most people use less as a warning and more as a holier-than-thou way of calling someone a troll.
Let’s face it, because I realized pretty quick, though I’ve only been here for about 5 weeks and I never lurked: This board is a primitive social structure, a ladder of respect that everyone is trying to top. The board is cliquey; there is much shameless sycophancy, flirting, and bullying. I know that I’m pretty unpopular (at least in the pit, I do well for myself in GQ), but that’s really by choice; I’m very unpopular with a lot of people in real life, too. Of course, I can only blame that so much on others’ inferiority complices; I do piss them off on purpose. The reason is that I can choose friends as easily as I can choose enemies, but this is a tangent.
Back to The Urge. He really deuced you with this thread, and more people than I can believe have posted, most of them not realizing their own stupidity, let alone the transparency of their social motives. Advantage: Urge. That’s all the scorekeeping that I’m doing.
People discriminate by age here, not because they disrespect the younger party per se, but because they become insecure in the presence of a legitimate intellect half their age, in a ‘culture’ that is stripped of superficiality (but only in the most obvious sense). I’m cocky, Urge is cocky, almost everyone here is bloody arrogant. The difference is that users like me and Urge admit it, while many others clique up and feed off of each other silently.
Posters I like: Urge, Esprix (there’s a lot to be said for affirmative action!), Coldfire, et al.
Posters I dislike: aha, GaWd, Diane (please burst into flames), kellibelli, et al.
Another point: The whole gigantic sig thing is just another way of getting attention and adorning oneself with signs of acceptance from a high-profile user (Wally, UncleBeer, etc.).
