I see. Thank you.
Normally I have little patience with the overpaid and under-sensed, but I’m beginning to think she has serious mental problems. With her formerly-close family completely estranged, the child-neglect accusations piling up and her habit of running around in public naked, it all points to… well, IANA doctor, but it is not explained merely by ‘no class.’
Still, you can count me in the “even if Silverman had kicked her kids in the face she still should have done her job” camp. I think Britney’s people are taking advantage of the generally poor opinion of Sarah’s monologue, much like Silverman may have taken advantage of Britney’s performance. (BTW: I like Silverman but this wasn’t the right venue for her type of comedy, and completely the wrong audience. Still, the “50-cent is still alive” joke was a home run, and the C-Lo/Kanye joke leading into “If Amy Winehouse isn’t Jewish, someone better tell her face” = awesome. I didn’t think the Britney stuff was mean, just not that funny. The “mistakes” reference, besides being the funniest part of it, was clearly a jab at the tabloids, and the hairless vagina bit had nothing to do with her kids at all, it was just there to lead into a sight gag. The Paris Hilton stuff was the part that was an utter waste, she seemed to be just filling time at that point).
I would have a beef with the brass that hired Britney in the first place when she’s so notoriously unreliable, but I think they were betting that she would rally and make a good effort at matching (or beating) her other great VMA performances. Unfortunately, due to illness or drugs or apathy or whatever, she didn’t.
But then again, they probably thought of that. Either she does great and they’re heroes for giving her the chance (a la Pee Wee Herman) or she’d tank and everyone would be talking about it for weeks. So it’s pretty much win-win for MTV.
A cockeyed optimist eh? I bet there were ok if Britney performed well, but more than happy to air her crashing and burning. How many people tuned in just to see what would happen?
I heard that she was supposed to wear a corset, but rejected it as “not sexy enough”.
Riiiiiight. Sexy is being “Hollywood Fat”, in a bra and panties. Wicked hot, I tell ya!
I agree that she’s not “fat” as far as the unwashed masses are concerned, but if she’s making money off shaking her ass in her underwear while lip-syncing, then she better not have an ounce of fat on her, or even better…cover the hell up. She’s had 2 kids and her body looks great, but not “Hollywood Great”.
She’s delusional about her body, her talent and god only knows what else.
Artist are hired based on how many viewers they will bring, by this measure getting Britney to fail miserably was a huge success. I believe this years VMAs had 24% increase in viewers over last years, the fact that Britney bombed only means tons of people who missed the original broadcast are going to tune in to watch the repeats just to see her bomb. Everyone saying whoever hired her should be fired is likely completely missing the point.
Mercifully, they aren’t doing any repeats of this year’s broadcast. That fact alone no doubt bumped the ratings up.
I honestly think her body looked fine, even for Hollywood. Now granted, I saw all of this from youtube. But I didn’t see any lumps or flab. Her stomach wasn’t like a washboard, but it was far from beluga. It was tight and her legs were firm.
The problem was her complete lack of carriage. She had neither grace nor swagger to pull it all together, so her whole presence came off shabby. Instead of looking like a stage costume, her outfit looked like a pair of black granny drawers sidled up with an ill-fitting bra from Walmart.
Had she taken to the mic with some prowess and pep, her body and wardrobe would have been a non-issue.
Are you joking? They’re showing it pretty much every night this week and next.
I saw something on last night where they weren’t showing the actual VMAs, but were showing celebrities commenting on different bits of it. Is this supposed to be in keeping with their VMA–only one chance to see it–policy?
I’m not really an MTV watcher, so I don’t actually know. I did read about the VMAs in EW or TV Guide or some such rag, and they said it wasn’t going to be repeated. Just to show that I’m not going crazy quite yet:
That is a bang-on post. Dammit, that is well said.
This is my reply to all you Britney hater out there!
You’ll have to Deal With Me!
I caught part of that last night, too, the show with commentary, so I guess they’re spinning it that it’s not exactly the same as it was originally aired, so it’s not really a repeat. :dubious:
Yeah, what cracked me up is that during Britney’s performance, they had all of the celebrities making uncomfortable comments about how great it was.
And then they completely cut out Silverman’s jokes about Britney’s kids and even Paris Hilton.
I’m still wincing, and I watched the video a couple of hours ago. She looked like a stripper so high she forgot to strip.
Vinyl Turnip, able to survive for months in the wilderness on Schadenfreude alone, finally feels sorry for Britney Spears.
As I said, I have no particular dog in this fight and it’s not my intent to excuse Britney’s performance which, as I said, appeared to me to be the result of a combination of nerves and unpreparedness, but my comment was made in regard to the statement you quoted by Silverman’s publoicist which I had also read earlier in the day on one of the news sites. The rep contended that Britney couldn’t have overheard Silverman’s jokes because Silverman didn’t rehearse her “full” routine before going onstage. It was this comment that I was referring to as being dishonest and a verbal sleight-of-hand.
Today her rep is apparently saying she didn’t “leak” any of her comments beforehand. Why not just simply say she didn’t rehearse or that she never mentioned her gags beforehand (which Silverman has apparently decided now to do herself, according to your post)?
It’s this mincing of words and the apparent dishonesty behind her rep’s comments that I’m criticizing. I would also point to Silverman’s own dishonesty in claiming now that she “hoped” she wasn’t hard on Britney…I mean, come on, give me a break.
Why the hell is that guy in the curtains?
I like Britney, I really do. I have enjoyed her music - liked her look and appreciated the way she marketed herself (more of a dancer instead of a singer per se).
This performance was just sad - tentative. Normally when I watch her dance I think “Wow, I wonder if I can pull off that move?” this time it was, “Not only can I pull it off, but better.” I don’t think she is fat, but I agree maybe different clothes…
I hope she can pull her life together, for her and her children. Take some * more* time out of the public, maybe forever and just be.
