Best comedy on TV. That was a fantastic first season and a fantastic season finale! I love how they didn’t go for the cliches.
I liked the surprise ending (well, it was kind of surprising to me) and I liked the note on which they left Peralta’s and Boyle’s love lives.
I think I laughed the hardest at the thrift store costumes they bought. Captain Holt was looking SHARP!
Tonight I happened to see an old episode of Law and Order (Brisco/Green era) and there was “Boyle” as a transit cop.
Didn’t fall in love with the show over the first season but it was nice filler for when I didn’t have something else I wanted to watch.
Adam Samberg doesn’t really do much for me, but I think Chelsea Peretti is the funniest one.
this was an enjoyable find. it took a handfull of shows until i laughed out loud at something.
i gave it a whirl when i needed something to watch while “clean sweeping” some boxes.
i think the cast goes together. hitchcock and scully (great names) are shown as being not the most detecting of detectives, eventually they are shown to be very good at detecting when it is important; ie detecting a hidden bathroom.
I was worried by the initial previews that it was going to be an Andy Samberg vehicle, with him as the cutup and everyone else acting as his stooge. I’ve been very pleasantly surprised at how rich the ensemble is and how fast they’ve gelled as a unit. The only element not quite working yet is Gina —in some ways she’s the funniest character, but it’s obvious the writers are still figuring her out. They’ve got the other characters nailed though. Can’t wait for it to come back for season two.
Bump!
We just started watching the show a few weeks ago, based on a Hulu recommendation. I was very pleasantly surprised at how funny it is. Braugher is indeed a comedic genius; in “The Mole,” his speech about “Am I all right?” is a monologue for the ages.
I also really enjoy the show. You can tell that the creators are true comedians rather than people hired to write a comedy. Some of the stuff they come up with is totally unexpected and hilarious.
It’s still really good, now in its second season!
I think it’s “punchy.” Or something.
Definitely one of my favorites, and one of the few shows I’ll watch right away on the DVR and not let the Playstation interfere.
One of these days I’m going to write a TV show, and have a character be a total rip off of Diego. Her deadpan “Like I care” is just gold to me.
I also like that the show has a heart too. Some nice aww shucks moments have happened. including my favorite moment when Boyle was high on his medication after he got shot and was talking with Diego about when they will get together, and he showed such confidence and I just loved it
Do you mean Diaz (Rosa)?
Boyle and Diaz should never get together. On the other hand, I was surprised by how much I liked Boyle/Gina.
Holt on the ball was… Gol… Just amazing.
I also was amused by holt and jake having a “find the mole” sleepover. Amy will be so jealous of the guest pajamas.
Raymond Holt will surely go down as one of the best characters in TV history.
“I’ve mastered all the moves.”
I loved how they all noticed the one cop was a whole minute late and Braugher was the one who guessed why. Such a good show.
Yeah I meant Diaz, damn memory
Last Sunday’s episode was the single greatest in all of broadcast TV history. Skeptical? I explain why here (warning: FB link)
And something I didn’t mention in the link were two of Holt’s greatest deadpan deliveries: “I am in a state of euphoria” and (in priceless period garb & hair style) “I’ve lost everything.”
This show just keeps getting better and better.
Kyra Sedgwick’s Deputy Chief Wuntch was such a treat. I’m a huge fan of The Closer, and Sedgwick’s brilliant and nuanced portrayal of Deputy Chief Johnson, so seeing her in a comic role as an entirely different type of Deputy Chief was really fun. I’d love to see her on the show again and see the continuation of her feud with Holt.
I find her to be the least funny one. I’ve heard that she’s sort of a love-her-or-hate-her type of comedian, so that would make sense. I’m getting to like her a little better, though, maybe because the writers have found some better ways to use her. At first I thought the Gina/Boyle pairing was awful, but it really does work somehow.
I was seriously psyched when I saw Sandra Bernhardt and Stephen Root walk into that hotel room! I hope we see more of them.
After we saw that, my son gave a standing ovation. Never saw him do that before. Then we watched it a few more times. The man is brilliant.
I like the way we see Holt loosening up just that little tiny bit, and the flashback sequences with him in the horrible '70s suit are hilarious. I’m also impressed with how the show is exploring his back-story and personal and career journeys. The scenes themselves are funny, but underneath that, Holt’s history is being presented seriously and thoughtfully.
One thing I noticed right at the beginning, but haven’t seen discussed, is how they both adhere to and thumb their nose at certain cliches. Like cop shows always seem to have a black guy in charge of the unit, right? So why not have two of them? And the token Latina? Why not have two of them? Did they do it on purpose? I don’t know. Maybe they just thought Crews, Braugher, Beatriz, and Fumero would be good in the roles. But if that is true, what they did NOT do is say, “well, we can’t have really have both female detectives be Latina, so let’s cast someone else.”
Any time they show him in flashback is just amazing. Frank Pembleton would be horrified.
I love the fact that Lt. Holt’s character is gay and there’s nothing remarkable about it. There’s no silliness about it, no stereotypes…just great dialogue. Being gay, i always watch tv shows or movies with gay characters with an over critical eye. I like that they are including ‘my people’ but I do not like when they are written caricatures and or every episode is ‘very special’. Da gayz are pretty ordinary, truth be told… Or at least my husband and I are.
