A number of months ago I decided I needed some toys so I purchased a couple of things from http://www.goodvibes.com, including a vibrator. I have never had a problem having a big “O” (and another and another), but I figured I would <ahem> expand my repertoire.
Based on reputation, I expected new heights of ecstacy from my friendly vibrator, but that’s not what happens. Pleasant sensations, certainly. But nothing even close to getting me to the edge, much less over it. And yes, I’m pretty sure I’m doing it right ;).
Is this unusual? Am I some kind of freak?
And I do prefer a copilot but I don’t have anyone currently qualified.
I love my vibrator. It felt kind of weird to me the first time I used it, but after I got use to it, Wow! Usually I use mine with my co-pilot but it is nice for when he is out of town too. Maybe it just isn’t for you though.
Was it okay ordering it online? I have been thinking about ordering a new one but I have been scared. Actually, there are dozens of ways to use one, so the way you tried it, although not “incorrect,” may not be the most effective way for you.
Did you use it vaginally? Clitorally? Anally? How 'bout your nipples? Some women find direct stimulation too intense with a vibe, so try putting in the the vincinity of your usual hotspots, or use it to vibrate your fingers or the dildo and use that.
I think Good Vibrations actually has a book about how to get the most out of your vibes, you might want to look into that too.
Porcupine, I went through this same process about a year ago. I assumed that once the batteries were in and it was on I’d start having the big O until I passed out. Nope - It was very disappointing at first. I had to try a couple different kinds and really play around with everything before I found “the one.” If yours is made of hard plastic, try a nice soft jelly kind that’s more flexible and see what that does for you. It really does take time and experimentation and good old fashioned X-rated fantasies and just playing around 'til you get it right. Once you get it right, you can’t go back to getting it wrong and you’ll be able to help your partners get it right too.
If you want to be really foolproof about it, use your dildo and vibe in tandem.

I agree with Magdalene on the different types. And, it is a sensation that one may need to get acclimated to.
Also, it’s where you put it. As in, a vibrator may not bring you to orgasm when placed in the area where one would put a penis. However, when placed in the area where one would put a tongue… Now there ya go. This information courtesy of a friend who recently purchased her first vibrator.
Zumba, ordering online is fine if you go to a reputable site. They will send you stuff in plain fedex or ups packaging and not make a big deal about it - the vendors are aware of your discomfort and do everything to protect your privacy, include sending you confirmation emails from a generic-sounding email address.

A lot depends on the type of vibrator you have. I’ve had some of those penis-shaped battery opperated kinds, and they’re solidly OK. If you want the rocking orgasmatronic type of vibrator, invest in a Hitachi Magic Wand. The first night I got mine I thought I’d died and gone to heaven. It’s WAY more powerful than anything that runs on batteries. My SO likes it, too.

As has been said already, try different things and find what works best for you. I’ve got one vibrator, it’s 6" and it’s blue, but I’ve only used it a few times with someone else. If I’m going to use my little blue buddy I prefer to do it alone because I know all the spots to hit and my SO will find them for a second and then loses them… it’s too irritating to let someone else use it on me. It was Halloween night, and after an evening filled with drinking and a viewing of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I went off to bed.
